I stayed in 2007, so there is a chance its been renovated or something by now - but not likely.
Staff were lovely, cable TV in the lounge/reception area and places to sit in and around the hostel. But the hostel is at the top of a big hill and doesnt look very nice.
Not too far from the train station though, once you make it down the hill!
Included beakfast usually awful - horrible coffee, cheap indivually wrapped cake and something else equally 'yummy' - couldnt cost more than €0.50 to make that...but food you can buy in the evening was ok!
There is a lift, but a good flight of stairs too...
Our room smelt horrible when we arrived - complained about it, they put something down the drains (we had a mini closed off bathroom in our private dorm with shower, toilet and sink), but it still smelt the whole time we were there.
I wouldnt stay again...

Rooms

The cost was so low that I paid double (18 x 2 = 36) per night in order to have my own room. The view was amazing since you are at the top of a large hill, so I was overlooking the Mediterranean. Beautiful!

The room had a strange smell so I kept the window open as much as possible.

My only major complaint about this place was you are expected to be out of your room no later than 10 am each day. Not good if you are exhausted and need to sleep in for a while. The manager will come banging on the door at 10:05 if you are not out.

There is an outdoor patio and a kitchen in the basement that offers meals and drinks.

The location is great, the train station is literally at the bottom of the hill, and you are only a 5 - 10 walk to the water.

  • Liked — Location is excellent. The patio is nice. The view is amazing!
  • Disliked — Having to be out of my room by 10 AM each morning -- too early!

Just come back from a university trip to Naples, stayed at the Ostello Mergellina for 4 nights. After reading other reviews we were a bit worried but after staying there were pleasantly surprised.

The hostel staff were very friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean, the showers were hot, no ants or other insects in the rooms, a few cats and dogs hanging about but they were friendly. I found the place quiet but some of our students said it was noisy at night at times - but what do you expect, its a youth hostel with a large turnaround in guests.

If you want somewhere cheap, clean and quiet - this is the one for you.
The reviews were right about one thing though - the breakfast - a lump of bread and luke warm coffee - every day!!!! Horrible.
