“OK In A Pinch”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2012

We originally had planned to stay at Hotel Belle Arti but due to a mistake on my part we had to punt and find another location. This was within a half mile walk of the National Museum which was our target activity for the day, our last in Italy before flying out of Naples the next morning. This location was fine for both but I agree with a previous poster about the dismissive attitude. We had a room with an air conditioner that did not work. After trying to fix it, they agreed to move us to another room which was much smaller, but at least cooler. While the staff was responsive to our needs, they did act like we were imposing. Perhaps it's the Naples way as I found everyone there to be very cool toward english speaking Americans. I'm from the south and we are friendly people...so there is no way this was their responding to us being brash like I know some from the US can be...They were just plain rude in this city.

Apart from it's convenience to travel links there were few other reasons to stay at this hotel. It was opposite the botanical gardens, however it was far from tranquil, as it overlooks a busy road with constant traffic noise. The rooms were clean, with nice furniture and a functional en-suite shower room. The breakfast was a few stale shop bought croissants, ham and yoghurts - it was very disappointing. They advertise parking on their website, we assumed a private car-park, it is actually a public garage down the road. They also didn't tell us there was a charge until the end of our stay when we had a plane to catch. When we questioned why they hadn't advertised the charge on their website or told us when we arrived they replied that the website said "parking available" not "free parking available", not really the attitude we expected from a 4 star hotel. This hotel is in a good location - but don't take a car there and expect a dismissive attitude.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms overlooking the Via Foria. Don't take a car and expect to park.

Our room was right on the main road. Loved it! So colorful to see and hear Naples 24/7. The hotel rooms were very clean. The staff was very friendly. The breakfast was adequate. It was in a good busy location. I would not walk around here at night but during the day it was okay. I would stay here again. It had hot running water and the rooms were quiet at night. We were here just last week for two nights, pre cruise.

For the money (which included breakfast), this hotel is perfectly OK. It's location is terrific but, if you are in a room overlooking the road (Via Foria, one of the main roads through the city), only if you can put up with the constant noise of traffic - and, by constant, I mean almost 24/7 - it's Napoli after all! That said, we never travel anywhere without earplugs and it was not therefore any real issue for us BUT BE WARNED.

Back to the location. It's very convenient being only about 1Km from the nearest Metro station (Cavour), The National Archaeological Museum (a must see) and the Centro Storico. The same metro station also links you to the rest of the city as well as the major out of town sites with direct trains to Campi Flegrei and Pozzuoli / Sulfatara and, trains to Herculaneum and Pompeii via Stazione Centrale (as well as onwards to Sorrento).

This hotel provided the largest rooms of my Italy tour. With a nice sized bathroom (with a typical phone booth sized shower), a nice sized bedroom and a separate living room with TV. The polished hardwood floors were a welcome change from cold tile or not-so-clean carpet found in other hotels, and the thick walls and double shutters and doors for the bedroom helped isolate sleeping travelers from the city noise. The room didn't need heating or cooling at the time I stayed, but there were radiators as well as a modern heat/cooling unit, with remote control, in the room. The evening meal on the lower level was very nice and the breakfast on level 4 had enough variety to give your day a proper start. There is a pizza place across the street that looked inviting if you're not into 3 or 4 course meals. They have wireless Internet, but it wasn't listed as free. There's also a computer in the lobby which has a charge in half-hour increments, but when one of our group was going to pay for using it at the front desk, they let him use it for free. The elevator was smooth, if a bit slow to be called, for those that don't want to climb stairs. It was a good choice for price and location for the places I wanted to see.

Room Tip: If you want to sleep late, get a room away from the street. The Italians drive with their horns honk...

The hotel is a bit past it's best and it's certainly not for those who wish to indulge or expect luxury. It's a basic hotel with basic facilities. I certainly wouldn't class it as a four-star...
However, it is great value for money. If you can overlook the noisy and dirty area, just walk for 10 minutes to get to the centro storico and the more touristic parts of the city.
The rooms were basic, but clean and tidy. The staff were friendly enough, although hardly the most professional, but they were very helpful when we had any questions.
It's a slightly more easy-going establishment than most I've stayed in, but I'm used to hostels, so this doesn't bother me, but it might bother some. To be honest, though, it's pretty much the Napolian attitude!! It's a small, family-run business, so don't expect hotel-chain niceties and efficiency.
I really liked the place, but I can see how others would be taken a bit by surprise.

Room Tip: Enjoy a drink in the bar/lounge-very relaxing
