“Overplayed by the travel company but actually very good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

We booked this hotel as part of a "City Break" package with a well known UK travel company who deal through a high street travel agent. As such, and particularly in view of the pictures in the brochure, we expected a scenically placed hotel catering for tourists. What we actually got was a city centre (well, very built up) hotel. The beautiful open terrace shown in the brochure proved to be outside the breakfast room, and no doubt ideal for eating breakfast al fresco in the summer months with a very nice view of Castello Nuovo although at the time of our visit the terrace was not in use (too cold / wet) and the view was across a building site for the construction of a new Metro station. Presumably by implication once completed this will be underground and all will be restored.

Exaggeration by the holiday company however is not the fault of the hotel, which was clean and comfortable with friendly staff, some (not all) of whom spoke good English. They probably all spoke better English than my Italian but that sadly is not saying much.

The room itself was comfortable and importantly (with the window closed) quiet, the view was nothing to write home about being across the rooftops and airconditioning units of surrounding tower blocks (we were on the 6th floor). The bathroom was excellent with a superb walk in shower. There was a large flat screen TV with a couple of English channels, a safe and a mini bar although this only contained one bottle each of still and sparkling mineral water which were chargeable (1 euro) if used.

Breakfast, served in the room on the third floor with the terrace, was excellent, plenty of choice, all the usual ingredients for a decent continental breakfast and the bonus of sausages and scrambled eggs if desired.

There is no in house restaurant for evening meals but there are two gems within easy walking.

The hotel was a scary 20 minute taxi ride from the airport (no reflection on the taxi but the Italian roads are no place for the faint hearted and Naples is a far cry from the picture postcard one expected) but in fairness well placed for the Via Toledo and indeed the sea front and Chaia.

A much nicer hotel than its location promised but not a first choice for a holiday base.

Out of the main train station, you will need to take a taxi. Should cost around 10 euros. Hotel is kinda boring in Design and Decorations. It was however, very clean. Staff was nice and accommodating. When we asked for an extra pillow, it was provided promptly. The hotel was close to the port. Recommend taking a taxi everywhere. Naples was a scary place. Were followed quite often when walking. Day trips were great from this location to Capri and Pompeii. I also recommend the Naples Museum. Breakfast was ok~nothing exciting. Recommend taking a taxi to the airport. Should be around 20 euros. Couldn't wait to leave Naples. Was never so scared of a city as I was this one. Once you leave the hotel, it is not safe.

This lived up to everything I expected.

We only had a single day in Naples as a stopover on our way to Positano which we got to using Rainbow Limos. We used the Mercure as a base to do some of the Hop On/Hop Off bus tours. The bus starts outside the castle which is 2-5mins walk from the hotel, making the location perfect for us.

There are food options within an easy walk of the hotel.

Taxi from the main Naples train station to the hotel was €11.

We chose the cheapest room at about €90 in low season which included breakfast.

Room size was very good for the price and had a modern fit out.

Staff were friendly as expected. We were missing a towel in our room and a call to reception saw it arrive within minutes.

Room prices were very reasonable for Mercure as Naples is a cheaper city.

Rooms are very clean and spacious. Excellent location. Front desk staff very attentive and courteous. Will definitely recommend to our friends. Naples is a good base for day trip to Amalie coast, Pompeii and Sorrento.

Good location, near to the sea, and old town. All in walking distance.
Breakfast was ample and quickly topped up by staff
Friendly English speaking receptionists, nothing to much trouble.
We changed rooms on arrival as had booked a quiet room and was given 3rd floor on route to the breakfast room,[to noisy] we moved to the 4th floor lovely and quiet.
Very clean room with excellent room maid, great attention to detail
The ladies on reception arranged for a taxi to take us to visit Pompeii 110euro return trip for four people.[ well worth a visit]
Good measures at the bar!

We stayed at Mercure Napoli Angioino Centro during a 10 day trip to Naples. The cab ride from the airport took about 20 minutes, very easy ride in. We reserved a regular double room. The room was very clean and modern, although small. The two twin beds were right next to each other. The nice perk was that on our 6th floor room, we had a beautiful ocean view. The bathroom is very comfortable with the raised shower a true traveler's delight. The TV had a lot of channels in other languages (4 English Channels, and also Japanese, French, and German.)

The staff was very kind. My sister got sick on our trip and stayed alone in the hotel room. The staff called her twice during the day just to make sure she was okay and to see if there was anything she needed. The staff was good with directions and restaurant recommendations.

The Mercure Napoli Angioino Centro is located just steps away from the New Castle. It is a magestic old castle that makes for a great landmark. If I ever got lost (which is so easy and fun to do in the narrow streets of Napoli) I'd just look for the castle and find my way home. It is also just a block away from the port. Our stay in Naples took us to Capri and Ischia and it was a 2 minute walk to the ferries. There is an R2 bus that stops right in front of the hotel that goes direclty to the train station. This made the day trip to Pompeii very easy. The hotel staff will also book tours for you, though we found them to be quite expensive.

About 3 doors down from the hotel is a great restaurant called Antonio's reasonably priced with a warm atmosphere. There is also a grocery store just a block away (we like to buy some food to take back to the hotel to cut down on food costs. In the alley behind the hotel there is a fantastic pizza restaurant and two small convenience stores.

One small problem we had (and maybe it is more of a problem for our travel agent) is that at check out we found out we were responsible for city taxes that our travel agent didn't take care of. The pictures advertised by our travel agent also showed a rooftop terrace with perfect views of New Castle. However, we couldn't find the rooftop, not sure if it is closed permanently or for winter. Around New Castle there is construction to make it a metro station. That will truly up the convenience, although there is ametro stop about a 10 min. walk away.

Room Tip: Ask for the upper floors so you can get the good ocean views.
