“Enjoyable visit and some great exhibits”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

Once you travel up out of Naples to the Capodimonte area you know you are letting yourself in for something special. The Farnese collection is excellent and it gives a very good overview of a period of history when italian art was developing and changing. Don't miss their Caravaggio, but they have so many other special italian artists it is worth it even without seeing this picture.

The building itself is an ex-palace, so lots of grand marble staircases and huge rooms. The only downside is that once you get the ineviatble school and tour groups the sound levels really rise as acoustics were not set up for lots of chattering voices all at once.

“Wonderful art and park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

If you fancy getting away from the noise and chaos of central Naples for a while, this is an ideal place. Easy to reach by one bus (about 20 minutes ride, straight up the road from Via Toledo / Piazza Dante / Museo Archaeologico) then just walk 5 minutes round the walls to the right till you find the entrance (poorly signed as ever). Good job we didn't believe any of the locals on the bus who all told us it was impossible to get there! Lots of fantastic art (pot luck on what you get to see, as room closures and reorganisations seem to be rife) and a pleasant park surrounding the gallery. Was there in Feb so didn't need shade from fierce sun but imagine that in summer the tree-lined walks which radiate out from the main park would be worth seeking out, if your feet aren't aching too much from art and cobbles.....

“Mostly closed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

Visiting on a rainy day in March, we took the bus from Piazza Dante up the hill to the gallery (along with everyone else in Naples). The disinterested staff grudgingly sold us a ticket (no credit cards) and we trudged off up the stairs to see the paintings. Most of the gallery was closed, so we saw none of the royal apartments and none of the contemporary art section. There are some nice paintings, but for the money and inconvenience of getting there this was a pretty crummy experience. The walk back down the hill to the centre of Naples, with the weather just clearing and the sun shining on the bay, was the best bit of the trip.

“Visit and enjoy!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

Wonderful jewel away from city centre, placed in the middle of beautiful historic park. A lot of art to see and admire! Something you do not expect because of relative lack of information and difficult access (not in the cernre). Convinient to buy Campania Artecard for 3 or 7 days to visit all the attractions. A museum of prime class. Do not miss it when in Napoli!
