“Breathtaking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

Best to travel here out of season. The road up the volcano is apparently gridlocked in high season. We went in November and there was no traffic at all. The final walk from the carpark to the crater rim is quite strenuous and takes 20-30 minutes. Buses from the Circumvesuviana Pompeii Rail Station do not run out of season. There is however a taxi bus service. Make up a party of minimum 4 people and pay no more than Euro 15 per person (there are always other people waiting to make up a party) This service is only Euro 2 pp more expensive than the bus when you take the site entry fee into account.

“The climb killed me.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

Don't listen to the tour services who say its a 20 minute climb. It is not. I admit I have a health problem that makes climbing difficult but my friend is young and fit and she didn't make it in 20 minutes either. Once up it's a good view and looking into a volcano is always fun, however if you struggle with climbing then don't go with a tour group that only gives you an hour to get up, look round and come down again (as we did). Alternatively try Solfatara at Pozzuoli. You can walk on the crater and is not such a strenuous climb.

“SUCH A LIFE EXPERIENCE!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

It's AMAZING to be in the crater of the volcano! It's kind of tricky to get there by yourself but totally worthy. We took the train from Naples Circumvesuviana station with direction to Sorrento and stayed at Pompei Antica station, there we had to pay for a shared taxi van, it's 15 euros each for roundtrip and they wait for you in the volcano parking close to the crater. The way up is plenty of beautiful sights! once you arrive to the parking now you have to walk like 10 minutes upward to the crater and there you'll be amazed by it!!! The crater is big and unbelievable, from ther you can see Sorrento, Capri and Naples... as we went on fall season it was super rainy and windy and taking pictures was almost imposible but totally funny with your hands freezing and little ice drops falling with the rain. It's totally one of my favorites moments visiting Italy, a must-do, for me!

“Definitely worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

We got on a minibus tour to Vesuvius from outside Pompeii station, which took us up to the volcano's carpark in just under 30 minutes. The minibus fee (€20 each, but we got it for €15 by haggling) does not include the additional cost of being allowed to walk from carpark to summit, so be prepared to fork out more money on arrival there.
The walk up to the crater is quite steep but is not far - it only took us about 20 minutes. We went on a cloudy day so the views from the top were not great, but I imagine they would be on a sunny day. It was also very interesting to peer over right into the crater, and to see the steam/smoke escaping from various locations around the inside. Well worth a visit.
