I went to Naples twice on earlier occassions but missed visiting this place, although I was walking around. The Building is quite non descriptive, considering the stunning Umberbto Galleria just opposite the road...but that is true for all good things! They are always hidden away. This time, when I picked up a must see sights in Naples, i noticed the Theater and by God, what an amazing experience!
The Theater opened more than 250 years ago and is a stunning testimony to all good things during the olden days. The Theater is located in Via San Carlo and is just a short walk from Castle Nuovo. I reached the Theater at 12 noon and went straight to the ticket counter. They charged me 5 Euros and asked me to wait as a guided tour would take place at 12:30 noon.
They were most gracious and asked me to wait inside the Gallery of the Theater which also houses their gift shop. You can also pick up a number of fliers from there. The guy who was showing us around was extremely good!. He took out the time to explain everything in detail, both in English and Italian. The Theater as you enter, you cannot help but marvel. I had never seen anything like this, except in movies. The design, the decor the pain which the artists and builders had taken to create this truly stands out. It has close to 1700 seats and a royal box for the King. The theater has seen a number of important works of art being performed in here and as the guide told us more, it dawned on me how culturally sound people were in Europe even at that time!
This place is a definite must when you visit Naples.
