4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013 via mobile

This hotel is good. Lovely historical building with quiet courtyards. Our room had good bathroom and bed was comfortable. There are no irons or ironing boards. We found the area around the hotel to be very run down, with a lot of graffiti, rubbish
etc. This meant finding a restaurant in the area difficult. We ended up eating at hotel which was fair and adequate. The service was very good in restaurant. We would recommend spending extra on taxi if staying on coast and limiting time in Naples. We stayed as we have a 10 am flight out.

A strenuous uphill walk from Garibaldi station. Reception spoke good English but was somewhat annoyed when I asked to decide later if I wanted to extend my stay. But the rest was just excellent. When Wifi did not work from my (small) first floor room, I got immediately offered to change to a fantastic 3rd floor room. Quiet, large bed, great TV with about 100 international channels. Huge, modern bathroom. Wifi is 7Euros for the entire stay but worked well on the 3rd floor.

Room Tip: Avoid 1st floor (no Wifi, small rooms)

This hotel exceeded my expectations and being that we were there pre season it seemed as if we had the whole palace to ourselves! This is one of the most unique places I have stayed and the loft room we were given was lovely. Our room faced the street but was not noisy at all. It was actually fun to sit and watch all the activity going on outside with a glass of wine in hand.

Loft area was a bit stuffy--perhaps a fan would help. I was told they don't turn the air con on until June. The only way to cool the room off up there to sleep comfortably was to open the window, which of course meant a lot of noise...On a positive note the beds were extremely comfortable--the best we slept in the entire 10 day trip.

Good tip: they have a fixed price taxi to the airport for E15 which is far better than a private transfer which will cost you E30-E35. Take advantage of it if necessary. We had a very early flight ( 6 am) and had no problem arranging an early morning taxi the night before. Please note the taxi driver may try to charge you more ( ours did) but just kindly remind him you know that there is a fixed price agreement with the hotel for E15!

I highly recommend this lovely hotel for any stay in Naples and contrary to what many reviewers here have said I found the neighborhood to be just fine!

Room Tip: Loft rooms are great!

The hotel is a very nice historical palace in the old city center of Naples, especially the two inside gardens are an oasis of peace.
the rooms are large and very well decorated, bathroom are also wide and very bright.
The breakfast is simply phenomenal, there are a lot things to eat and all of them very very good.

the people that work in the hotel are all very kind and helpful.
considering the rooms and the hotel the quality/price ratio is very good, but it's normal considering the location and the city

After all these positive aspects, I have to tell the negative things:
the location is not fantastic, even if the hotel is in the city center, the surroundings seems to be disreputable.
In the room the temperature is very very high and the AC are not very silent

We stayed here for two nights and paid for our room using Priority Club points so, for this reason (I assume), we were given a very small room; a stark contrast to the luxurious and grand appearance of the reception area! However, that said, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom modern and the room clean. We were also given robes and good quality toiletries, which were a pleasant touch. All staff we encountered were friendly and spoke good English (if, like us, you forgot to brush up on your Italian before arriving!)

The downsides were the lack of tea/coffee making facilities, a €7 charge for wi-fi and an over-priced restaurant (which clearly caters to the 'on expenses' crowd).

As other reviewers have said, Naples is a dirty city, but that isn't the hotel's fault and this feature isn't exclusive to this area so don't let that put you off staying here. It's a good average, but maybe not quite deserving of its 4* status.

Although finding this hotel in the dark was a little stressful, once we did it was worth it. The hotel was lovely, peaceful and clean and buffet breakfast was very good. In a hotel of this quality I would have expected free wifi. It is available for €7 or you can use a desktop for free. The location is good for central train station but was around a 20 minute walk to the city centre.

We paid and planned to stay three nights. We left after two and that was two too long.

The hotel itself is clean, modern and well run but the room we were given was extremely poky - you couldn't even wheel a suitcase between the bed and wall. They've clearly just put fake walls into old rooms to make double the numbers. It was clean, comfortable and with a decent enough bathroom, but much much smaller than you'd ever expect from their clever website photographs. Our view was onto some dirty house's washing being hung out over a pile of rubbish... not the picturesque views the pics they use show. Despite the hotel clearly being less than half full they 'had no available rooms' to move us to.

The airport transfer, at €30 is an utter rip-off - DO NOT BOOK. Save yourself the cash and either get a taxi or the local shuttle.

The restaurant is also a rip off - €16 for bruschetta? Outrageous. But then, as you'll very quickly find - the area the hotel is in, much like the rest of the [--] that is Naples, has pretty much no restaurants, and the few you do find, or have recommended, are pretty grim. That said, despite poor service, no acknowledgement, and poor choice - the food we had was generally very tasty and cheap.

Best tip for Naples though (apart from leave and go to Sorrento as soon as possible) was the ArteCard - a brilliant idea if you are staying in the area for a few days. €27 gets you free entrance into two historical sites or museums (so - bingo - that's €22 you've saved on Pompeii and Herculaneum straightaway) PLUS unlimited travel on the trains and local bus network - and when I saw 'local' - that's the whole section of Italy you're in. We used it to get to Pompeii and back, Sorrento and back, a gorgeous bus trip along the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento to Amalfi and then from Amalfi up to Ravello and back, and then, from Sorrento to Herculaneum and back to Naples and then for the airport shuttle bus. Not bad eh? Just remember to protect your valuables from the pickpockets.

All in all - Naples is somewhere you want to leave as soon as you arrive, and whilst that's not really the M Gallery's fault, you should think twice about booking. Head to Sorrento instead as it's easily commutable to the stuff you'd want to see in Naples and its surrounds.
