The Minerva overlooks the southern coast of Capri, a five minute walk from the main square of Capri.
The service is second to none, the room was superbly furnished and everywhere was clean and tidy.....
It is a kid free hotel and with only 18 rooms is likely to be full...so book well ahead.
Would we go again, absolutely....a case of you get what you pay for if ever there was one!

There really aren't enough glowing words to describe this place, but I will try my best.

My vacation started out on a sour note: my boyfriend and I missed our connecting flight in Frankfurt (inclement weather) and were re-routed to Munich and then Naples, ultimately having to miss our first day in Capri. We called La Minerva to alert them to our travel delays. Luigi, the owner, was not only extremely helpful in telling us when the first and last ferries and hydrofoils of the day departed, but when we finally got to the hotel we found that he had upgraded our room to a Deluxe room-for free. We thought it was a nice gesture, but were still really upset that we had missed an entire day of our stay, which we knew we would have to pay for. Little did we know that upon checking out, we would only be charged for the 2 nights we were actually there! A free upgrade AND we didn't get charged for the night that we missed? I've never heard of this!

The 3 days and 2 nights we spent on Capri were, for lack of a better word, magical. But La Minerva and its incredible staff pushed our stay to the brink of utter perfection. Time after time, Luigi gave us absolutely amazing recommendations for lunch and dinner restaurants (Villa Brunella, Villa Verda and Il Geranio are a MUST!), made sure we saw the island from the "most beautiful viewpoints" and generally made us feel welcome.

The rest of the staff was equally incredible, Kamal was so friendly and personable during the breakfast buffets. The room was breathtaking and spotless everytime we came back from an outing. You couldn't ask for a better hotel! It was very reasonably priced and it will be the ONLY hotel I ever stay in when visiting Capri. That is, until I sell all my belongings and move there permanently! There's not one negative thing I could say about this place...and as a New Yorker, I'm prone to my share of griping!

Thank you SO much for the incredible hospitality Luigi, we will be back!

This hotel was just okay. We could not find the hotel when we arrived in Capri and wandered aimlessly for an hour in search of it carrying our heavy luggage. The hotel and our trip planner had neglected to advise us of porters to help us with our luggage. We took a cab once we landed at Capri and the cab dropped us off at the top of the funicular and announced that was as far as he would go. When we asked how we get to our hotel, he gave us directions which were wrong. We asked numerous people and no one had any idea how to get to the hotel. Finally after much wandering and sore backs we got to the hotel only to have the hotel laugh at us for not having had porters take our luggage. This immensely annoyed me as we were exhausted and in pain. Next the room was not as nice as I had hoped the deluxe ocean view room would be. You could barely see the water. The bed however, was quite comfortable which was a nice surprise. The staff did bring us a drink to our room to welcome us but that was about the end of the service.

When we asked about restaurants we typically got terrible suggestions from the staff. When we wondered upon restaurants that looked good, those turned out much better. My husband and I are also art collectors, and typically like to buy paintings wherever we travel. When we asked the hotel about where the art galleries were and which ones they recommended, the hotel told us there was only one gallery that had paintings on Capri and most people don't come to Capri for art but for Prada and Gucci. Which was completely untrue, we found several art galleries all over Capri. In fact, we visited 8 different galleries with several beautiful paintings. On the whole, the staff did not seem to know the island very well or make good recommendations on activities or places to eat. They did however arrange a nice boat tour for us through the grottos, which was much more expensive than if you got a boat by just walking down to the harbor but worth it nevertheless.

Before our final day, we told the staff we would be leaving the next day and asked about boat schedules, etc and decided on a boat time. The next day when we were leaving we asked them to please have the porters get our bags from the room, to which they then told us that porters need to be arranged a day in advance! We were so upset that they managed to arrange porters for us (at a hefty fee) but it just went with all the less than competent service we had gotten from the hotel. In addition, even though we had prepaid the room, the young man initally tried to charge us for all the nights, and I had to say we already paid and the only fees we needed to pay were for the porter. The young man then proceeded to charge our credit card but told us there was an error and it wasn't working. He swiped it several times and then asked for another card. We asked if he was sure it didn't go through and he said absolutely it did not. So we gave him another card. Low and behold, when we got home both our cards had been charged, and several times. Needless to say, I would not/NOT recommend this hotel.

Dear guest,

we are so sorry to read the quite bad review and would like to apologize providing some explanations.

Starting from the problems with your bill, we are of course not trying to overcharge anybody also because honestly this would be a very stupid, useless and self-killing practice.
It only happened that since the vast majority of our clients books directly and pays at check out we made the mistake to have forgotten your agency prepaid for the stay. Sorry. The fact a card was not working happened in front of you with the bank machine. Problems did not happen with the other card. It seems honestly not very possible that you have been charged twice, as you say, since all transactions were performed in front of you, but, if again we made a mistake, please contact us for a full, immediate refund of what was not due.

Regarding the problems at your arrival, please note that you booked through an agent and not directly with us. As per our procedure we always provide at confirmation very detailed information about how to reach the hotel and how to manage with the luggage on the island. I am sorry but it seems that your agency did not forward to you such information. All these infos as detailed as possible are available in our web site at the page location.

The center of capri is forbidden to any vehicle so there is a very efficient luggage service at the harbour, used by the vast majority of guests. Luggage transportation has a charge because it is quite a complicated service, where efficiency and reliablity are a must. The service is provided by us in conjuction with 2 companies of porters (one in capri center and another one in Capri harbour) plus a man that works for us at the harbour to follow up on them. At the end it is for us
altogether a cost rather than a profit.

Regarding the boat tour of course there are cheaper boats available at the harbour but consider that there are always cheaper restaurants, cheaper hotels, etc. Often, you pay for what you get.

For restaurants, we do our best providing suggestions for what we think are the best places and this is generally appreciated by our guests. Of course we are sorry if sugestions were not good but we just did our best and out of any interest.

Concerning the art galleries I remember our conversation and I tought you were looking for modern art galleries, and in that case I told you that Positano, your next destination, had much more options. If you were looking for local painters, of course many are available in Capri and sorry for my misunderstanding.

Please accept our apologies.

Luigi Esposito

This is an always place to stay for me if ever I am going to the island of Capri! I do not have to look any further or spend time looking for a place to stay, it is great value, beautifully decorated and the warmth and charm of the owner Luigi and his staff is awesome!! Kamal is so wonderful making sure you get a good start to your day with a yummy breakfast...the choices might leave you a bit indecisive "pine nut tart, pastries filled with cream, fresh fruit, yoghurt, prosciutto, tomatoes, fresh mozzerella, eggs benedict.....wow ...delicious!!! Luigi checked on the weather for our day trip, the times of boats for our departure...(didn't want to leave!) , took care of getting our tickets, lugauge....above and beyond! This was my 3rd time staying at La Minerva and there is no question why I always return there!! Thanks again Luigi, Kamal, and Staff at La Minerva for making our stay packed full of beautiful experiences & friends to cherish for a lifetime! Thank you from the heart! hug hug!!!

We came back to La Minerva a year after our first visit to find all the same people on the staff and also to find that they remembered us. The setting is beautiful as good as Capri can provide. The staff is very helpful and ready to take time to make sure you find the right store or restaurant. Rooms are light and pleasant and large by Italian standards. The entire hotel is spotless and everything is in working order. Nearly perfect. Breakfast on the rooftop could not be more pleasant or could it be more flavorful. Ripe fruit, fresh squeezed juice, and eggs cooked to your order as well as the usual buffet items. There is no reason to look for anything better on Capri.

The whole experience of arriving in Capri is unique. A short trip (40mins) across the Bay of Naples and you arrive at the very busy Marina Grande. There will be a hotel rep to welcome you and do let him organise the porters to take your luggage (and when you see the cobbled streets, hills and steps, you would be mad to do otherwise!). Anyway it's a delight to wander the streets and stop and have lunch, or a drink and simply people watch on the way to the hotel - and you don't need to trail your luggage with you! Buy the ticket for the funicular up to Capri and the Piazetta. There are lots of day trippers and we were there in the off season, but once the late afternoon comes round, they pretty much have all gone. It was fun working out our walk to La Minerva from the Piazetta, it's worth looking at googlemaps before you arrive to get your bearings. Once away from the Piazetta and walking away from the crowds you enter a different world - the flower lined alleys and pathways are just beautiful, not to mention the wonderful villas and mansions hiding behind the high walls but sometimes offering a tiny peak for the inquisitive visitor.

Capri was wakening up after the winter season when we were there so not all the restaurants and shops were open, but enough were for us to enjoy dining from a variety of high-end (Quisisana) to eating at the locals' favourites - we asked a couple of the shop owners where they went for dinner - and even enjoying some very nice "takeaway" from the local bakery which we had as a picnic on our terrace. The locals were very friendly and appreciated us trying out our very sparse italian!

La Minerva hotel - well, we expected a lot before we got there, made even more so as we had originally booked to go in April 2010 but the Icelandic Volcano had other plans for us, so arriving one year late, we were welcomed like long lost friends by Mr Luigi Esposito and his wonderful staff. We treated ourselves to a deluxe room and it didn't disappoint. It has to be one of the cleanest hotels we have ever stayed in. I won't tell you too much about the hotel or room as it's fun to discover it all for yourself but suffice to say you will not be disappointed with the facilities.

Capri is for walking - not heavy treks - but gentle strolls to see the island and explore the walkways and little streets that the day trippers don't get to. Luigi has prepared a very good guide to Capri which is in the bedrooms and ask Luigi to organise a private boat trip for you around the island - we took a couple of hours with our own small boat and captain and he took us into little caves and grottos that the larger group boats can't get to - so well worth paying the extra for this. There's lots of history on Capri as well, so plenty to explore there also.

Did we like Capri - YES very much - would we go back -YES when we've saved up - it is expensive - would we stay again at La Minerva - YES without question.

Just one more thing - you will pay more to sit down in a bar/cafe and have your drinks than drinking your espresso at the bar (Euro 3.5 sitting down Euro 1 at the bar standing!) but they usually give you little snacks with your drinks and hey you're on holiday and if that's the price for the entertainment of people watching, it's well worth it!

If you don’t like your experience at Minerva, there is something seriously wrong with you. From the moment we walked into the lobby we were treated like absolutely royalty. The staff are so attentive! Our room wasn’t ready when we arrived, and so we were escorted to the pool area, given yummy drinks, towels, and told that he would be back to summon us when it was ready.

Our room was perfection. (Room 41) Our very large terrace overlooked the Mediterranean Sea, and offered perfectly positioned lounge chairs for our enjoyment of the surroundings. It had a nice, private feeling. The room had large windows looking out over the view, a nice bed, soft linens, and a couch. In the bathroom, the large tub was positioned directly in front of another large window with view.

For breakfast, we were invited to the full-scale buffet on the top floor where we enjoyed the freshest juice, fruits, and breads. Once seated, we were asked if we would like some eggs, cappuccino, etc. The staff catered to our every request without hesitation. In fact, they anticipated our wants before we could even ask.

Capri is absolutely one the most beautiful place I have ever been. That said, this island is very expensive. This hotel, while not cheap, would be considered mid-priced for Capri. I wish we stayed more than just one night, but I am grateful for the time that we had since most people only see this island on a day trip. It is worth an extended visit. Stay as long as you can afford to – and savor every minute.

Room Tip: Room 41 was fantastic.
