First, let me say that we had a wonderful trip to Mt Vesuvias and the ruins in Herculaneum. But..................... Be prepared when you get off the train in Ercolano. It's one step above a slum. We were told our hotel, The Miglio D'Oro, was within walking distance of the train station (200 meters we were told). But it's more like a mile away. Take a cab. We walked through the middle of the town of Ercolano. We pulled our suitcases (moving on to Positano after our stay in Ercolano) through the blazing heat. It looked like a third world country. The graffitti and buildings are falling apart. The people are out of work hanging out with nothing to do. It's very intimidating.
The ruins are much better preserved in Ercolano then in Pompei. The ruins are about 200 meters from the Miglio D'oro Hotel.
Our Hotel was absolutely magnificent. The Miglio D'Oro is a beautiful hotel with a fabulous view of Mt. Vesuvias. The wait staff was curteous and helpful and the meals were fantastic (We were too chicken to attempt an outside meal in the town). We loved this hotel it is Beautiful if you can close your eyes on the way from the train station.
Have fun!!!
