“Great location, good value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

We stayed for two nights - room only. No breakfast. The location is really great - just 1/2 block from the main square - a very easy walk to the train station, restaurants and shops. The marina is just down the hill. The room size was average - a stand up cabinet for a closet. The bathroom was above average in area, but very narrow. Our room had a skylight but no window. Wifi was good, but insecure (no password access). Therefore, I avoided checking any websites sites where security is necessary (e.g., banks). The innkeeper, Carlo, owns a restaurant nearby and offers a discount. For us, it was not a B&B experience, but a room for rent - no breakfast and we had minimal interaction with the staff; we seldom saw the innkeeper or staff. The innkeeper was a little irritating regarding payment. Although we pre-paid for the room through a travel agency, on check-in Carlo demanded payment. After some back & forth, it turns out he mistook us for another couple also checking in that day. No one had asked us for our names, but we gave them our passports. At check out, we were asked multiple times ... "anything from the mini-bar?" and "did you pay the city tax?" For these reasons, I took off a point from the rating.

This B&B is less than a minute away from the main square (Tasso Square) and all the shops and restaurant. It is also convenient for the port and the railway station.

Rooms are a good size with excellent air-conditioning. One downside (not the fault of the B&B) is that we experienced some noise/disturbance from the street in the early hours, so you might want to ask for a room that does not face on to the street.

The owner was very friendly and helpful. He can arrange breakfast, if you wish, but there's no point given there are many places to go just outside the hotel.

We stayed at La Magnolia for 6 nights on a family trip with one room downstairs (linking out onto the patio) and one upstairs. This B&B is probably the best value you will find in Sorrento (for the quality that you get). It is right off the main square, but hidden behind a large gate so you would probably just walk right past it without looking for it. Some of the rooms do face the road which means you do get a bit of traffic noise, but nothing too loud. We chose Sorrento as our base for visiting the rest of Amalfi so wanted a hotel to suit this convenience and La Magnolia hits the mark for that being walking distance to the centre of town, the train station and the ferry port.

The rooms themselves are basic, with bed/s, closet, desk and mini bar. Everything is wooden throughout and lovely. This hotel is one of many business ventures your host Carlo looks after, so this place isn't like a hotel with 24hour concierge/check in, daily cleaning service etc. so it is more like a self contained apartment without the kitchen experience (but that was not a problem for us). Talk to Carlo about your plans for your stay i.e. day trips to Capri, Positano etc. as he knows the best way of doing everything and is only too happy to help out.

We didn't have the breakfast so can't comment, but there are plenty places on the square nearby and Carlo also owns a cafe nearby that we ate at that made a pretty good omelette!

All in all this place is a great place to base yourself in the Amalfi region for a longer term stay. Hotels across the road and nearby are at least double the price and whilst you might get some more conveniences/better amenities - you would be kidding to pay for that when this place is across the road (however if you are looking to spoil yourself on this trip, then yes, do give those places a go instead).

The only thing negative thing I have to say is that it did get a bit noisy inside the hotel at times. Because everything is wooden there is a lot of noise with doors opening and closing and echoing of your neighbours in the room next door. This happened a few nights and because guests arrive at all times, you could be sleeping when next door moves in and it can be a bit loud. It might not be an issue for some, but I just happen to be one of those people that is a really light sleeper and can't stand noise so it got on my nerves, but maybe more so than others - just luck of the draw with who your neighbours are as well I guess.

Finally, a tip for planning your arrival! As I mentioned above, Carlo looks after a few ventures in the area so he isn't at the hotel at all times. He will spend the morning or afternoon there, but not all day. To make sure he is there when you arrive, do contact him prior and let him know your expected arrival time so that he is there (he is flexible and will meet you late at night like he did for us) but make sure he is across it otherwise you will be left standing outside the gate waiting!!!!!

Carlo is the man!! I have stayed in many four stars throughout Sorrento. This place is better!! Big rooms, ice cold AC!! and very comfy beds! U need anything just ask Carlo and its done!! All this for less than half the price of the four Stars!!
You can use the pool across the street for 15 Euros! Best Value for your money.

Also Ask Carlo to arrange a boat and get out on the Sea!! By Sea is the only way to enjoy Sorrento!!

I'm normally a fierce critic but I can't fault La Magnolia at all. Great location in the centre of Sorrento but in a side street where you don't get any traffic noise. Rooms are a nice size and very clean. Rooms open out onto a patio - rare for city centre hotels! Breakfast was really nice and they were happy to serve seconds. Carlo the manager was great and made us feel really welcome. Would highly recommend these apartments.

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor room with doors that open onto the terrace. They will put your breakfast out...

At the last minute we meet up with Carlo who just got back from shopping- he showed us the best room – Sorrento – and we stayed for 4 nights. Carlo was a great host and even did a great park service- parking our car in a special place (€15,- per night) and collecting the car when we needed it again. The room and with the on suit bathroom and the great breakfast – non It. Typical made our stay very pleasant. The location is great to go out into Sorrento for dinner and drinks and the best place to start the day trips to Capri – Almafi. Thanks Carlo well be back - After this moved on to "In Alte Mare" in Salerno also very good

Just back from our Italian family holiday which ended with five nights at La Magnolia, Sorrento. We booked two of the more expensive comfort double rooms at this property after checking out their reviews on Tripadvisor, thinking that it would be a fairly safe bet, in the centre of town. We were pleased to find that it is indeed within the town centre and only ten minutes easy walk to and from the train station where you can get local buses to Amalfi and also to Naples Airport for only ten euro.
When we found the property, we saw the sign outside showing rooms to let. Carlo the owner arrived and booked us in, full payment first, to our double comfort rooms, one upstairs and our room next to the front door. As he showed us into our room, explaining this and that, alarm bells rang as I thought this is not a 25 sq metre comfort room as per my booking. The owner left and I checked my son's room upstairs, which apart from the tiny windows to the front street, appeared to be as booked. I thought no this is not what I paid for I must say, so to cut a long story short, we were then given the room next door, which was much bigger, so my point is, he took a cheap shot on a newly arrived couple, to off load the small room so he could let the bigger room for more money, while we were to know no better! It wasn't a mistake and left a bad taste within five minutes on arriving.
Putting that behind us, we enjoyed our first day in Sorrento which is a truly beautiful resort with loads of lovely shops and fantastic eating places. Breakfast the next morning was very poor and remained exactly the same for the next five days, set outside on a three small glass tables. Awful corn flakes, a yoghurt, either one croissant or one sweet roll and if you take tea, one tea bag, that's it, nothing more, nothing less! They are also really agitated about where you sit, we were a party of four but we were told to sit separately as our room was assigned a small table for two which meant my son and his partner had to share a table with two other guests they didn't know and who also wanted to sit on their own but this wasn't allowed!
When we returned to our rooms after a long hot day, we noticed that our bed linen and towels had not been changed. I asked and was informed that this was only done after three days. In temperatures of 35, I think this was excessive and my son actually had to ask for clean bed linen on the fifth morning!! By the way the towels are actually big tea towels but my worst complaint about La Magnolia is the filth of the shower and the floor under the bed.
I've written a few reviews over the years and always endeavour to give a true account as I rely on them myself so when I say the very small shower was filthy, rest assured, it was bad. The scum on the green tiles had been there for a long time and the white grout was black. Sometimes bad things become a joke between you, so each day I wrote a number on a tile and sure enough it was still there the next day on our return. On the day we left, we could still see one to five! Below the bed the fluff was standing proud so it had been there a long time. It really doesn't take too much time to properly clean a room and it would make such a difference to a weary traveller to walk into a nice clean shower, clean towels and clean bed linen rather than a small dirty corner shower and old used sheets as we found it. The rooms are very tired and really need a freshen up.
Please take these points on board as they are an honest reflection of this very ordinary B&B. The location is great but unfortunately, that's where it stops in my opinion. It's not as if it's a cheap option either, so please look around and spend your money wisely, we most certainly will never return to La Magnolia!!

Room Tip: Make sure you get the size of room you have paid for as some are very small.
