“Perfect location with a beautiful view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

We stayed at this hotel during our honeymoon(June) but there was a tour group of young people here at the same time so obviously it is suitable for couples to family to friends.

It is a four star hotel. The interior is a mixture of modern finishes and vintage furniture. The overall feel is white and clean while the rooms are decorated with antique and pastel colours.

The hotel is really very nicely located -literally 800m, you can easily walk, from the old town which is a huge plus.

The hotel is located on one of the cliffs of Sorrento, with a sea view however not directly on the ocean (if that is what you are looking for). The sea facing rooms with lovely spacious balconies does have a sea view, although again only partly due to the distance. The hotel has 4 floors from ground floor down because of the strange geographic layout of the town, which is quite interesting.

The rooms are very specious with a lot of packing space, a vanity table, lounging chair, small TV and a huge bed. The bathroom is also quite spacious with a toilet NOT IN the shower like a lot of Italian toilets are. It had only a shower.

There are, it seemed, also “family” rooms, which consists of a small foyer and two rooms leading out from it.

There is fantastic private parking for only the hotel guests, behind a gate, right next to the hotel, which is really great in a place like Sorrento with its narrow streets and limited parking.

It’s got a “build in” restaurant on ground floor which caters for lunch and dinner. We did not eat here so I won’t be able to say what type of service or food you will find here. The view onto the Bay of Naples is beautiful though.

Breakfast was included in our deal and was a basic continental, with a couple of good pastries, but not something extraordinary. The breakfast room was a bit disappointing. Since the restaurant is located on the scenic spot of the hotel the breakfast room is the stepchild and was sadly demoted to the bottom floor, with no view whatsoever.

What I loved about the room was that it has block-out shutters in front of the balcony doors, which really helps for a light sleeper, like me.

The only thing I hated about the room was the air-conditioning. In the middle of the night it just went off. It was almost high summer in Europe and it was rather hot. We actually phoned reception to ask them why it is not working. We never could really figure out exactly what the reason was since they couldn’t give us a clear answer. Whether it was because it turns off when the windows are open, to safe electricity (which couldn’t be the reason because it wasn’t, we only opened it since the air-con wasn’t working anymore). Or it was because the “hotel” decides when the temperature drops below a certain point the air-conditioning is not necessary anymore and then it turns off the whole hotel’s…which was a little absurd.

Besides that we had a great stay. The staff was friendly and helpful and there is Wi-Fi available.
Pets are even allegedly allowed.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea-view room and ask them to come and explain the air-conditioning in the room.

The hotel is clean and tidy , although it could do with a lick of paint. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and spoke good English. The location could not be better it was only a 5 min walk to the town centre, which is amazing with all its little alleyways of shops and restaurants.
It was convenient for the train station and the port.

We were B & B for 5 nights, the room was light and airy and we had a good view from the balcony of The Bay of Naples, ( lovely to wake up to ) The maids were excellent and towels were changed every day.

The only downside was that breakfast was a bit boring and predictable but it was adequate. There are many nice hotels up in the hills overlooking Sorrento, however they are a bit remote, and people we spoke to wished that they had taken up hotels closer to the town

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the bay, ours was 309, it was fine

The hotel Rivage has some real plus-points, which personally we found to be quite at odds with some of the previous reviews, but one or two minor issues, too.

Firstly, the location is excellent - just at the far end of the main Sorrento high-street, 15 mins walk from the train station, 20 mins walk from the port.

Secondly, we found breakfast to be excellent. There was a wide choice, including fruit, cereals, yoghurt, croissant, ham, cheese, rolls, eggs, frankfurter sausage, and a wide selection of cakes and jams (traditional Italian breakfast fayre). I'm not sure what previous reviewers were complaining about, and can only assume that they expected a full English or eggs cooked 7 different ways! Personally, we found breakfast to be a highlight of our stay, particularly the fresh fruit salad. We did not, however, eat at the restaurant at any point.

Furthermore, we found the staff to be very helpful and accommodating - both at reception and around the hotel. An issue with our bed was resolved quickly upon request, and we found all dealings with the staff to be courteous. Again, this seems to be at odds with other reviews - just remember that a smile and 'grazi' go a long way.

We had a room at the rear of the hotel, since we booked late and therefore could not get a sea-view room. The balcony overlooked a secluded alley with plants etc and was very quiet. We occasionally heard other people out in the corridor, but no more than in other hotels.

However, my one complaint would be the cleanliness of the room. While the bed was made, towels changed and the room was 'cleaned' daily, it was not to a standard that I would expect. The shower was covered in limescale; the sink was not always wiped over; used glasses were not washed or changed all week; and rubbish was not removed unless it was placed in the small bathroom bin. These are small things, not enough to ruin a holiday, but disappointing nontheless.

Overall I would say that the Rivage is a pleasant hotel with an air of faded grandeur about it, and clearly one or two issues that they need to work on, which probably accounts for the lower prices. With some refurbishment and attention to detail, they could charge double the price!

Room Tip: Request a sea-view room.

We went to the Rivage hotel for dinner, we pre-booked as the location and views from the hotel looked amazing. On arrival we waited 20 minutes before anyone took our drink order, when wine finally arrived it was plonked on the table quickly. We waited ages again for our food order to be taken and when it finally arrived (after about an hour) it was really awful, especially the over cooked fish. When our plates were finally cleared we mentioned to the waiter that we were not impressed with the food or service. He grumpily moaned at us claiming ''we ate some so it couldn't be that bad!' At this point I was willing to walk off without paying, my boyfriend had more patience but did continue to complain. The waiter finally agreed to not charge us for the fish and did give us complimentary limoncello but too little too late for me. Don't let the location deceive you, there are so many lovely places in Sorrento, this is not one of them.

Came here for lunch one day and have to say the food was v dissapointing. In particular the lasagne was dried up and not particularly nice. The dessert selection was poor and they were serving carte dore ice cream which is fine but not what you want when you come to Italy!!Wouldn't consider eating here again!!

Hotel Rivage was alot better than expected - although at first disappointed by view from hotel room itself, 'Garden View'. In comparison to other rooms i viewed on my trip for a wedding party, i realised the rooms were twice as big as some of the most expensive in town. Location perfect away from hustle and bustle down town but within walking distance after a few lemoncello. View from Restaurant very good. Breakfast simple, minimal hot food but alot of choices of bread.nice fresh fruit salad every morning. Staff polite, friendly and helpful - especially girl at front desk with glasses.
only downfall was no pool - but was aware before arriving and little space to sun worship-although alot of alternatives in area.

Room Tip: request balcony on booking
