Just arrived back today from Sorrento. Chose Hotel Capri because of it's proximity to the main piazza. After booking, found previous reviews so we were a little apprehensive.
Our flight was delayed so we were quite late in arriving but was pleasantly surprised to find that they had a meal waiting for us (ok, it was a mix of cold items, not what we would have chosen, but that late at night was very welcome) and the restaurant staff were very pleasant.
Our room was at the back of the hotel, on the first floor. It was clean, attractive but very small - just enouth space for a double bed - and even more disappointing, no balcony. (If the window was left open, whoever slept on that side of the bed would bump into it it not closed first! ) Air conditioning worked well as long as the windows were kept closed. No private space to sit in for quite time before dinner.
Good sized shower room. Plenty of hot water. Towels changed every day. Supply of usual bathroom consumables provided, but cannot comment on quality as took our own. Hairdryer very useful.
As for the food - this left much to be desired (as my husband commented, "dinner lacked passion"). Very restricted choice, not very well cooked. Luckily, very small portions.... We ate in the hotel 3 times, at the end of full day tours, so didn't fancy more walking! Other nights we ate out - can highly recomment La Fenice restaurant (at the Marine Grande side of town - 15-20 minutes gentle stroll from the Capri, and a 15Euro taxi ride back).
Cannot agree with the comments about the night porter - did initially appear a little surly, but on entering into a conversation with him, found he did have a very good grasp of English and a very good sense of humour.
There was a notice regarding the bar opening times, but the bar was very small, and formed part of the dining room. Not very well presented, and did not invite spending an evening there. We were told that the reception/dining area is to be "re-modelled" for next year - not before time. Obviously, again from previous reviewes, the owners are gradually updating the facilities. So perhaps give it a year or two the public areas may be more conducive to spending an evening "in".
All in all, I personally think that the 3-star rating is is generous, and that his hotel is at the budget end of the market. Although we would love to return to Sorrento, we will not be staying at the Hotel Capri again.
