We stayed at Grand Hotel Flora for a week at the end of March through Thomson, on a Half Board basis. We had originally booked to stay at Hotel Capri but because of overbooking we were upgraded to this hotel.
The Hotel is in a good location, about a 10-15 minute stroll from the town centre. The rooms were clean and comfortable, if a little on the small side. We did have a balcony but not a particularly wonderful view. However, because of the time of year, we did not really make much use of this.
The staff at the Hotel were very friendly, especially Anna and Carmine who worked in the Hotel bar. They went out of their way to chat to us and answered any questions we had about the area.
The only downsides to the Hotel were lots of school parties and the food.
Admittedly, I am a fairly fussy eater but my husband is not and when he said he didn't like the food, I knew it wasn't just me being picky. The starters and desserts were ok but the main courses were of a pretty poor quality. On our first night we had fillet of Sea Bass and Veal Escalope - the Sea Bass looked like goujons and the veal was very fatty. Both meals came with chips! It went downhill from there and after the third night we decided we would eat out.
Breakfast was not much better. Although it was continental style, it consisted of Madeira Cake, dry danish pastries, chewy rolls, and cereal with warm milk. We only made an effort to go so that we could have a hot drink in the morning. On our last day, we were told that the Restaurant would open early to accommodate our pickup time but it did not. We were left paper bags in Reception containing pear juice, dry cake, a mouldy apple and something which resembled a mince pie.
It was such a shame that this hotel was so let down by the food. However, there are plenty of good restaurants in the town which made up for this.
Finally, do not book trips with Thomson, you can do so much of it on your own and for a lot less money. We made our own way to Amalfi and Herculaneum, with each trip costing less than 10 Euros for the two of us. If we had gone with Thomson it would have been 31 Euros each!
