We have just returned from 11 days in Sorrento. It was a revisit for me and a first time for my husband. We went through Thomsons and were encouraged by their 'shop' staff to try the Flora instead of the Continental, both four stars and a huge difference in price. Going half board was £500 cheaper at the Flora than B&B at the Continental.... no brainer!!!!
We did read the tripadvisor reviews, but were told by the Thomsons staff that the hotel had seen a complete makeover since the reviews were written.
The hotel reception area and bar were lovely. The pool was huge and kept really clean. Unfortunately the rooms had been given a rustic makeover and were a bit 'distressed'. Definitely not four star accommodation. Our room was in what I referred to as the annexe, slightly separated from the main body of the hotel. Our balcony faced the wall of the building to the left of us. Bit of a hinderance, but not overlooked and we did get the morning sun. We felt this was preferable to a street view where the road was noisy. Also, we arrived on 24 September and the air con had been switched off overnight even though the temperature was high twenties. The hotel management did finally relent and put it back on after many complaints from the guests.
My husband's bugbear is that as with a lot of hotel rooms these days, there was no ceiling light and the general ligting in the room was dim and made it difficult to read in the evenings.
The reception staff were polite and very helpful. The bar staff (only one, bless him) and waiters in the restaurant were really friendly and great fun. As I said, we were on a half board basis. The breakfasts were hit and miss, if you had a sweet tooth you would be in seventh heaven because you weren't offered a cooked breakfast daily, but alternated with crepes. There was some cold meats and cheese every day, but this was usually accompanied by rather 'hard' bread rolls. The evening meals were generally uninspired so we didn't always use the hotel restaurant. We both felt that whilst the content didn't always hit the mark, the food we did have was beautifully cooked and well presented. We rarely waited to be seated and nothing was too much trouble for Carlo and the gang.
All in all, it was a well positioned hotel with a great atmosphere, just wish the rooms and menu were of a better standard.
