“Nice hotel - would return.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

My wife and I stayed at this hotel from the 5th to the 12th October 2012. It is located on the cliff edge in a quieter area of Sorrento. I suspect that if there is a football match at the nearby ground it could be a little noisy for a short time. It commands excellent views over the Bay of Naples towards Vesuvius.
The hotel is well appointed and I could not find any fault with the food which I thought was excellent. Again all the staff were fine even though it was coming to the end of the season and I suspect they were a little weary and thinking of their holidays.
There was a problem with the room (219) which was kept clean and tidy but seemed to have a problem with ants. We were not the only room affected. The hotel made attempts to deal with the issue but they seemed to pop out of the woodwork for the whole week and I suspect we even retuned to ‘blighty’ with one or two in the suitcases. That said we had an excellent holiday at the hotel and I recommend the bathing platform to go for a safe swim but the cost of the drinks there will make your eyes water.
Others have commented of the small bar some 100 metres to the right of the hotel next to the football and tennis club. It is well worth frequenting as the beer and wine are cheap for Sorrento and they will make you a meal to take on the plane and all done with a smile!

Whilst this is a lovely hotel with excellent staff, it certainly has its downside. Our room was really quite small with virtually no view. Breakfast was average and the evening meal was certainly not 4 star, in fact we ate out on more than one occasion which was a pity considering we had booked half board. If you are a vegetarian or diabetic beware, you have only one choice every day and that's it. The evening meal was a great disappointment. Bar and wine prices are excessive especially when you consider there is a small bar/cafe nearby which charges only a quarter of the hotel price. There was no evening entertainment leaving the hotel like 'The Mary Celeste', totally without soul. The swimming pool is more like a large paddling pool!! Another disappointment. There were no courtesy daily newspapers, which is something we would expect from a 4* hotel (rated a 5T with Thomson's), Didn't get much sleep as he beds were as hard as bricks.

This is a nice hotel but be aware of its failings.

Room Tip: If you want a room with a view then be prepared to pay for it.

The hotel is in a lovely location with excellent views. Both breakfast and dinner were great, good food and decent quantities. The whole place was spotlessly clean, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The only downside was the price of drinks, though it was only a short distance to other more reasonably priced bars in the area. Would have no hesitation in recommending to others.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Riviera from the 1st Oct to the 8th whilst we were in Sorrento for our wedding. The hotel is lovely and always kept very clean. We were in room 208 and had a great view of the bay of Naples. We were half board and the food was lovely and always plenty of choice. Fried eggs on toast and bucks fizz for breakfast whilst sitting on the terrace enjoy the views was a fab way to start the day. The waiters were all very friendly, especially Claudio, Gennaro and Michele. The private jetty was a great place to sunbathe and take a dip in the sea. It was only a ten minute walk into the main square which is great as taxis are very expensive. Sorrento is one of the most prettiest places I have ever been to and we are already planning on going back for our first anniversary.

Room Tip: 208 is a great room

This hotel is in a great location, with beautiful views over the Bay of Naples. The rooms are spacious and clean. The staff are helpful and friendly.

The hotel is only a short walk from the town centre and it has it's own pool and a lift that goes down to the sea

The buffet breakfast is delicious and included in the room price.

Grand Hotel Riviera has splendid views and is a superbly presented hotel with a mix of modern & traditional décor. . Although appearing quite elegant we soon felt at ease in such relaxing surroundings and, as we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in September, have recommend the hotel to our friends & family.
Our side room was the smallest on our floor but it was spacious, very clean, pleasantly decorated, had a comfortable bed & had all of the expected amenities (full length mirror, good storage space, safe, refrigerator, desk, flat screen TV, balcony & lovely sea view)
We enjoyed the spectacular views whilst having breakfast on the terrace. The terrace was a special place to be in the evening with the backdrop of the garden lit by lights & the wonderful view out to sea. We enjoyed one evening of entertainment & live music on the terrace.
We stayed half board & thought that the vegetable & salad buffet to complement the well presented 3 course evening meal was an excellent idea. There was a varied choice of food and staff were willing to provide alternatives – we only had to ask!
Although the hotel was full there was no problem finding an area to sit & relax during the day and being safe to swim from the private bathing platform in such a lovely bay was ideal.
Another thing that made this hotel stand out was the quality of the service we received from all the staff & the high standards they maintain in the hotel. The staff were always helpful, friendly and professional.
Although it is just a 15 minute stroll into the main the centre of Sorrento it is not a relaxing walk as all the roads in Sorrento are busy!

Stayed here in May 2012 and I found the hotel to be clean and well laid out. The staff were excellent and the food in the restaurant was of a very good quality. The location is ideal as it is a 10-15 minute walk to the town and is a quieter area. I found the hotel very relaxing with great views over the bay of Naples. The hotel has a nice sunbathing pier although getting to it in the lift can be a bit clastrauphobic and is not for the faint hearted. Overall a pleasant stay and would recommend the Hotel and would definitely revisit in the future.
