“It's not just called 'Grand Riviera' for nothing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2012 via mobile

We flew out with Thomas Cook on 25th May, for one week. We were the 3rd drop off on the transfer.

Our first impressions were that we were the youngest by a couple of decades, however, as the week went on we saw a couple of young families.

The concierge are great! The rooms are huge - ours was room 501, a sea view room and definitely worth paying for - you repeatedly get the 'wow' factor!

The bathing platform is lovely - towels are provided at both the pool and the bathing platform platform.

Breakfast (under the American Bar) is buffet style, from yogurt, fruit, continental sweet bread, toast and for those that like a hot breakfast, there is bacon, scramled eggs and sausages too.

Dinner (One level down on the spiral stair case), is waiter service. The service is good and the food is always lovely. If you order wine and do not finish it, they will keep it for the next evening - and views of Versuvius whilst you eat!

The hotel is approx 10 minutes into the main square and is a lovely walk. If you book any excursions, the coach pick up is on the way to the town - left out of the hotel, at end of road, left again, once you see Hotel Royal, cross over and its just there.

A must is the Sorrento City Walk - its only 10€ booked through your rep, a 3hr walk around the city, where little gems are discovered! Other very good trips we booked were - Pompei & Versuvius and also the Amalfi Drive!

Just returned from a lovely stay at this clean, friendly, quietly elegant hotel. Reception staff couldn't do enough for us, the waiters were also helpful. All staff said hello when seeing us, which made one feel like a valued guest. Food was excellent, good choice at breakfast and each evening. Our only slight regret was booking half board, as there seemed to be some good restaurants in Sorrento which we'd have liked to explore. However, we were perfectly happy with the hotel restaurant.
If you use body lotion or hair conditioner, take your own, they don't provide it.

We have recently come back from a weeks holiday at the Grand Hotel Riviera. This is a spotlessly clean Hotel with excellent staff. Although we did not have a sea view room we looked over the garden and mountains and there was a large sun terrace just by our room where you could walk out and see the sea and swimming pool and the beach.

The food was very good and the view from the was over the bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius was amazing.

This Hotel was a short walk from the centre of Sorrento and therefore away from all the noise and bustle. Also not too far away from the railway station and bus station where you could get transport to all the local attractions, Pompeii, Hercalaneum and Naples.

A bus trip along the Amalfi coast is a must but beware of the heights and the drops if you are a bit queezy. Also the village of Raffello is a must see.

We would have no hesitation in recommending this Hotel.

We have just returned from a weeks holiday in the Grand Hotel Riviera, Sorrento. This was our first trip to Italy, so were unsure what to expect. This hotel will not suit everyone. If you like your daily dose of burgers and chips washed down with 10 pints of larger, this hotel will probably not appeal to you. If you want a laid back elegant holiday, excellent service and views to die for, then read on. Over the past twenty years of travel (we started late), this is one of the best holidays we have had. I so wish I had booked 14 days instead of 7. The Grand Hotel Riviera is listed as a 5T hotel and I would certainly consider it 4 star. The public areas are excellent with marble floors and comfortable furniture. The style of the exterior is Art Deco, but the furniture and decoration inside is of an older style. From the lounge area, there is a split level terrace which overlooks the Bay of Naples, the views are spectacular, looking across to Naples and Mount Vesuvius, we never tired of sitting here just taking in the view. The restaurant is on the floor below and most tables have views across the bay. You are allocated the same table every night, ours was 75, so you never had to look for an empty one each evening. Each table had the name of the visitor, our said Mr./ Dame Rickard, a nice little touch. The staff in the restaurant, as everywhere, were impeccable, both in manners and uniform, never a crease out of place. We have never been to a hotel where the staff are so efficient and friendly, a credit to the hotel. The breakfast was buffet style, all the usual fayre, although every day was very similar. Dinner was waiter service, the first time we have experienced this while on holiday. You could help yourself to the salad bar, the starter and main course was always a choice of five and the sweet trolley had three/four items plus you could request fresh fruit salad or ice cream or a combination of both if you wish. The portions were not large but adequate, I never left the dining room feeling hungry. We became friendly with many of the couples staying at the hotel and not once did I here a complaint from anyone. We didn't book a sea view bedroom because we saw from the brochure the wonderful views from the terrace, so we had a room which overlooked the rear of the hotel. We were on the third floor with quite a large tree almost in front of our balcony. We still had views of the country side, but I did feel a little sorry for anyone in the rooms below because the tree would have stopped them seeing very much. We always spend very little time in our room, maybe a little siesta in the afternoon, so views are not important. Our room was very tastefully decorated in shades of green, very restfull. There was small mini bar, well stocked, but no kettle, my wife likes a morning cuppa, so we will make sure we take ours when we next go away. If there was a fault, it is the distance from the hotel to Sorrento. It took us 15 minutes to reach the Piazza Tasso, so if you don't like walking, this may not be the place for you. Most of the walk is not very scenic and is not well lit at night, but we got used to it, so didn't prove a problem. Sorrento is a great little town, plenty of cafes and restaurants. You must try the local drink, Limoncello. We were given some when we had a lunch snack, it is excellent, so I brought a bottle home with me. As your base, Sorrento offers plenty of scope to visit other places, we caught the ferry to Capri and the local train to Pompeii plus went to Rome for the day arranged by the hotel. A FABULOUS hotel, a FABULOUS resort, a FABULOUS holiday, can't wait for next year to return.

Room Tip: If you are not having a sea view room, ask for a high floor.

Excellent hotel. Very friendly staff. Went half board and the food was excellent with plenty of choice. Stayed two weeks and the menu was never repeated. Views from the terrace bar are amazing and the centre of sorrento is a very short stroll away. Booked through Thomson and the rooms didn't have much of a view which was the only downside but meant they were cool. Still the terrace did and was a sun trap.

Room Tip: When booking ask for sea view. You pay extra but see the bay of Naples etc.

stayed at this hotel for a long weekend. hotel and rooms very clean, beds are very hard though!
food good although you don't get that much for dinner and breakfast is just cereal, fresh fruit and cakes don't really get much of a 'full english'!
more of an older generation hotel.
Sorrento is lovely and would recommend doing the Almafi coast tour as the views are amazing.

Room Tip: if you want a lovely view go for sea view room
