“A Wonderful View from a Pleasant Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013 via mobile

Just came back from a wonderful 11 days in Sorrento at the hotel Gran Paradiso with my wife.

This is an adults only hotel with a great pool area set on a steep hill with panoramic views of the bay of Naples and mount Vesuvius. There is a mini bus service to the town centre every hour, which takes about 10 minutes.

The staff are friendly once you get to know them, but not too in your face. Special mention should be made of the waiting staff in the dining room, who do everything possible to win the affection of their guests. I witnessed much singing, joking, kissing of hands and even some dancing with the guests which all added up to a relaxed and jovial mood. Also food was pretty good and was served in the evening, with buffet breakfast.

The whole hotel has been refurbished quite recently to a reasonable although not great standard and the rooms are clean with modern bathrooms. The only real negative is the lack of a room thermostat, so the room would be either very cold or hot, depending on whether the a/c was on or off.

Pool was nice but the water could be a little cleaner and the tiles around the pool were not cleaned on a regular basis during our stay.

Overall this is a good hotel and we had an enjoyable stay. Would recommend.

This hotel was perfect for us. It is set up on the hill with stunning views. When we arrived, unfortunately our room was not available, which was a bit of a shock. However, the staff were very apologetic and quickly shipped us to a nearby hotel just for one night, where we benefited the next morning from using their beach. On our return to Gran Paradiso we were delighted with our room. It was clean, simple and modern with a balcony and the most amazing views over the sea, the mountains and, in the distance, Mount Vesuvius.
We enjoyed the breakfasts, although they got a bit 'samey' by the end of the week. The one meal we had at the hotel was excellent.
What really made the stay, though, was the staff. Not sure if it is the Italian people in general or the Gran Paradiso staff in particular, but they really went out of their way to be friendly and helpful. The reception girls were always cheerful and really knew the area if you needed information about excursions. The shuttle bus was regular and easy to plan around and it was well worth the inconvenience of being out of easy walking distance to the main town for the fabulous views alone. I would highly recommend this hotel, especially if you want a quiet poolside free from young children. There were always sun loungers available, although sometimes you had to get in there early with your towels and there was usually parasols free even though they could probably do with a few more. The only change I would make would be some king of tea and coffee making facility in the room for us Brits - I think it is a continental thing but I really missed this. I would highly recommend this beautiful place.

We booked our honeymoon as a 10 night, half board stay at the Grand Paradiso through Thomas Cook. Having consulted Trip Advisor (of course) prior to, first our booking and secondly, our stay we were slightly skeptical as to whether or not we had made the right choice, despite the good value of our deal, as the reviews we had read on Trip Advisor were so up and down. We had advised the hotel well in advance that it was our honeymoon and asked, as we hadn't chosen one when we paid, that if a room with a sea view became available, if we could be upgraded. We had asked a number of times, via email, if this was possible but we were eventually told that they wouldn't know until we checked in.
When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted by the very friendly and helpful Viviana, whom my wife had contact with previously. When we enquired about the potential upgrade we were told that there were no sea view rooms available and given the key to room 322. This turned out to be one of the older rooms and really wasn't what we were hoping to be staying in for our honeymoon. The decor and furniture was dated and the shower cubicle was tiny. We decided to speak to the receptionists and they kindly said they would see what they could do. To our delight, we were moved to the fourth floor into a lovely refurbished room. The bed was one of the comfiest we have ever enjoyed, the bathroom huge and it was lovely, clean and bright. The rest of our stay was fantastic, the best parts being:
1) The amazing view from the front of the hotel
2) The superb food - we were so impressed with this. The variety on offer was outstanding. Not one dish was repeated throughout our entire stay
3) Kind, friendly and helpful staff, especially Nadja on reception and the guys in the restaurant.
4) The shuttle bus service was great and really handy
5) The pool and sunbed area
6) Eating on the terrace, watching the sun set over Capri
All in all, a wonderful stay after the initial hitch. We were so touched by the way the staff went out of their way to make things right for us.
We would love to return!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the refurbished part of the hotel and if you can, get a sea view room.

Thank you very much for choosing Art Hotel Gran Paradiso for your stay in Sorrento.

We try hard in order to make all the Guests Happy, for us it is not possible to give f.o.c. sea view rooms, as we need to give priority to Guests that have reserved the room with sea view.

Hopefully, we have reached the aim of making You happy and this for us it is the main point.

We have just come back from a weeks holiday. The view from the balcony was picturesque, the room was spacious and very nice as we had paid extra for a sea view. The staff are very friendly and do a fantastic job. Food in the evening is not to bad there is a good selection, however the breakfast is very poor and could do with more variety i was sick of eating scrambled egg. There is a bus service every hour that takes you too and from the town as the hill too the hotel is like climbing Mount Vesuvius the downside too this is that the last bus is at 11 pm so its either get that, walk or get a taxi which is 22 euros. The entertainment in the hotel is very poor a quiz night or a singer is needed too entertain the guests in the evening. Devan the rep was very helpful and suggested visiting Postiano a nearby town which we did, we paid 7.50 euros each to use the local buses al day,we had a lovely day there and would recommend it but it is walking up and down steep banks but worth seeing the scenery, shops and beach activities.

Room Tip: book a sea view

My wife and I had the good fortune to book a holiday in Sorrento with Thomas Cook and we chose this hotel based on what we read in the brochure. Well I can assure you it is far better than Thomas Cook describe it. We arrived on Friday the 9th August, and were immediately impressed with the reception area and the reception staff. We were allocated room 122, having booked a superior room with Sea View. The room was wonderfully spacious, the balcony was big enough for two chairs, an occasional table and two deckchairs and still left room to walk about! The pool was one of our first stops in order to cool down after the flight and a 90 minute transfer from the airport. Oh luxury, it was a good size, was clean and refreshing. The pool slopes from just a few cms down to 1.9 metres at the deep end. Surrounding the pool were many sunbeds and deckchairs. We both made use of the pool everyday of our holiday except 1.(And that was because we had had such a busy day, we were to tired!).
On the first night we ventured down to the restaurant, to be greeted by the Maître' d and shown to a table, which was clean and well laid out. We ordered drinks and perused the menu. We were greets with a choice of starters, a choice of 4 main courses including vegetarian option and then a choice of 4 desserts/cheese platter. Reading what the previous reviewer had said about onions in every meal, I can assure you this was not the case. I am fussy when it comes to food ( In fact when we holidayed in Malta last year the food was so bad we ate out every night), but here it was divine. Breakfasts were what you would expect, self service with an excellent choice from eggs and bacon or sausages, to continental breakfasts, breakfast cereals, yoghurts, toast, fruit, croissants, you name it, it was here. So, I have only mentioned the food on day one, I can almost here you say "What about the other days", well it was indescribable almost. The menu was varied every day with as I said before a choice of about 4 starters, 4 mains and 4 desserts It could not be faulted. On Wednesday 14th, we were lucky enough to be in the hotel for the start of their August festival, when the chef and his team really went to town with the most fantastic spread of food I have ever seen or eaten! There must have been 15 or more foods for the main course and you could have as few or as many of them as you wanted following this there was an equally large number of desserts to choose from. Heaven!. I could not fault the staff from the receptionist to the bar staff to the waiters in the restaurant and the room service staff were all extremely friendly and customer service appeared to be the priority of the day. The views from the hotel were stunning, however this was because the hotel is halfway up a mountainside and this should be remembered. There is a very good courtesy bus service to and from the Railway Station in Sorrento, which we could not fault. All in all we had a lovely holiday so our thanks to all the staff in the hotel for making our holiday so memorable

Room Tip: Book and pay extra for a superior room you will not be dissapointed

Where to start... First impression was terrible, we had specifically booked with Thomas cook as a honeymoon destination with a sea view, which we paid extra for as we were told to specify this to ensure a good room. When we arrived this could not of been further from the truth... Our room was awful, tiny and tired. There was no room to walk round, to the point that my wife kept bruising her arm on the door just trying to get in and out of bed. The shower was so small, when you turned around to pick something up you turned it off, that was if it worked in the first place. The tv didn't work properly and there was one plug in the entire room, which the mini bar fridge was plugged into! The apparent sea view was from the side of the hotel, which over looked another house and lemon grove. Our issue was that we had made it very clear that this was our honeymoon, booked almost a year in advance and ended up in a room you could barely move in that belonged in the 1970's.
However, when we asked to move the reception staff were very helpful, but told us they were fully booked till the next day, which was annoying as we told them we booked this nearly a year in advance! Our new room, which was stunning, almost made it worse as we were shocked that other people paying the same amount would have such a different hotel experience.
On the bright side the reception staff were incredibly helpful and gave us a fantastic recommendation for a restaurant to dine at on our last evening. The pool area and the view is sensational at this hotel and in the evenings it is like being in paradise, over looking mount Vesuvius and the bay.

On the subject of food, we were quite surprised to hear comments about how amazing the food was at the hotel, as my wife is allergic to onions, which she told the restaurant staff on the second night, therefore she had to eat a school dinner like pork escalope meal every night for 4 days because the dishes were produced on mass in advance so the onions on the other dishes could not be left out. We spoke to some people about the food who also were not impressed. After speaking to our Thomas cook rep, the menu became more varied and the quality of the food did improve as the week progressed, but considering the food we experienced in sorrento, the hotel food didn't match up to it at all. We had lunch there on our last day and it was awful and more expensive than the town. I had a club sandwich that was made mostly of limp lettuce and mayonnaise and the crisps were so stale I couldn't eat them.

The breakfast was great though, fresh and varied with gorgeous coffee (just don't pour too much in your cup as it is very strong!)

We found the reception staff, female bar staff, the cleaners and a couple of waiters incredibly friendly and helpful. However, it was quite inconsistent. The shuttle bus was great and prompt even if it was a little terrifying when the driver was texting all the way down the hill! The last shuttle bus from town is 11pm which doesn't give you long from the first evening bus, so we would recommend getting fit before you go to make it up the hill or bring lots of cab money!!

Overall, the hotel is great if you are lucky enough to get a good modernised room from the offset and the chef is in the mood to cook well that week. We felt it was very unfair that guests pay the same for a pot luck on what sort of room you get, they should be all of the same standard, or the rooms that have not yet been redone should be offered at a slightly reduced rate. Room advice: if they give you 324 and you like a spacious room...give the key straight back!! We also thought that the staff were brilliant at reacting and dealing with complaints, but they were complaints we should never have to have made on our honeymoon in a 4 star hotel. Unfortunately, the room we got to start with actually had my wife in tears on the second day as we had spent all our savings on a honeymoon of a life time and no one at the hotel said as much as a congratulations or though it was an important enough occasion to put us in a nice room to start with. We think with a few tweaks this hotel could be perfect for all, but as it currently stands, I would not recommend it as a honeymoon destination.

Didn't get off to a good start our room had a toilet with a constant drip. The manager did manage to upgrade us which we were very gratefully for. The staff are lovely. I did have an accident on the dubbed and watched two other people experience the same problem basically they will collapse if not put back correctly for an older person this could cause a serious injury. The view is fantastic from the hotel. If you do miss the shuttle you can walk to st Angenello right at the bottom of the hill and catch a train which is a lot better than the walk to Sorrento. The food was very good.

Dear Mrs julie42Bedfordshire,

Thank you for reviewing your stay.

I am sorry to read that you had an accident on the sunbeds.

The back of the sunbed is supposed to hold the head, not the whole body, that is why it may collapse and so cause injuries. As it is a light alluminum bed, it is easy to turn it upside down.

We have started a refurbishment programme since the past years, every year we add a new plus to the hotel. We hope that you will be able to enjoy the changes during your next visti to Sorrento.

Best regards,

Alberto
