“Great place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013 via mobile

Just returned from Sorrento and 10 nights at the Ambasciatori. Very well appointed hotel with beautiful public rooms and our junior suite was fantastic, with what must be one of the best views in Europe across the Bay of Naples with Vesuvious in the background. The staff were, without exception, amongst the most attentive and helpful we have come across - nothing was too much trouble. We chose to take 5 evening meals in the hotel, for which we pre-booked at a very good rate, but while the food was generally of a very high standard it did fall a little when they were busy.
Some reviewers have mentioned that this is an expensive hotel, it's certainly not cheap, but it is excellent value - go on, treat yourself.

We stayed 3 nights in a sea view room with balcony. The room and bathroom were spacious. We kept the balcony doors open all the time and the view at night was spectacular with all the lights from across the water. It seemed a shame to even leave the room. We had a beautiful sunset the first evening which we enjoyed from the gardens with a lovely bottle of wine. Be sure to walk through the gardens at night. Loved the staff, the food, the grounds. Attended the "Candlelight Dinner" on Saturday with strolling violinst and pianist with prix fixe menu which was a great bargain. No complaints from us except that we wish we would have stayed longer. The location is a little removed from the train station but walkable with luggage. We managed just fine being in our 60's. Also would recommend the bus to the Naples airport. Be sure to check schedules since they do change.

So we wound up there during a tour of the Amalfi Coast en route to Annacapri earlier this month. Could not believe it. One of the great views of this part of the world, excellent service and the food they provide is excellent quality and presented like a work of art. The room was really well appointed (no view but really why be in the room when you can be everywhere else in this place) This felt beyond 4 star and was a highlight for us. Theres some real pride working in this establishment. Recommend highly

Room Tip: If you want the view from your room, pay more otherwise just sleep in it and be everywhere else

Situated on a busy one way road we were initially impressed by the reception area, but the opposite was true of the view from our room. But we were disappointed with the view from our room - a football stadium with either training or matches happening on 6/7 days of our stay. We initially requested another room the receptionist gave us another room to look at, which although on reflection would have been quieter, seemed a little shabbier than the original room, both balconies were only as wide as a small patio chair and certainly not one which you could relax on, we would have willingly paid for an upgrade but we were told no other rooms were available even though the hotel appeared far from busy.
The pool had definitely seen better days, it looked inviting, although smaller than most hotel pools, it will need a good clean before next season. The pool area had more than enough loungers with head shades and sun umbrellas. It was unfortunate that this area was over populated by flies which indiscriminately pestered sun bathers which meant that the pool area was vacated by about 3.30 each day, respite could be had at the belvedere, where there were fabulous views of the marina, coastline and of course the azure sea.
The food was ok, however my husband has a nut allergy, we informed the receptionist of this fact to ask advice, she was not too helpful, but the head waiter was more accommodating; however as many of the dishes had nuts in the recipe we either ate with caution or we ate elsewhere. Breakfast was alright and the staff would serve you a cappuccino instead of tea or regular coffee which you prepared yourself.
Having stayed at the sister hotel, Grand Royal a couple of years ago I would choose that hotel over the Ambasciatori any day.
Value for money is always debatable, yes if you had a room with a view, no if you had traffic noise interspersed with football training, matches and whistle blowing, unless of course you like football and the roar of car engines!
Sorrento has near perfect scenery but choose your hotel wisely as it could make or break your holiday.

I justed loved it. Perfect location, 10 min walking from downtown, and a placement hard to match, just off a wonderful cliff, with the greatest sea view that you could find.

If you can afford it, go for the superior rooms, with balcony and see view. It will be worth it... you'll wake up to the infinite sea, and a view to the Vesubio. Nothing beats weaking up to that.

A thing to improve: wifi access, which was cut off frequently.

Room Tip: Go for the sea view room; more expensive, but defenitely worth it.

Booked this hotel for five nights from the comments here and wasn't disappointed.

The hotel is very clean, nicely decorated and very well maintained. It is situated on the cliff top with fantastic views across the Bay of Naples. It is just a few minutes walk along to the main busy square so it's quieter than being right in the center.

On arrival we were upgraded to the Vesuvio Suite, the largest room in the hotel. We were flabbergasted. It was beautiful with two balconies overlooking the bay and the largest bed I've ever slept in. Not sure what size but it looked bigger than King or Queen. There was a bowl of fresh fruit and a bottle of chilled Prosecco awaiting us.

We ate in the restaurant the first night and it was good. The other nights we explored the town. Breakfast was also good especially the omlettes made to order and the fresh pancakes.

The pool area is a nice quiet spot with waiter service for drinks and lunch snacks or alternatively you can take the lift down through the cliff to the pontoon on the sea.

There are a few comments about the football stadium near the front of the hotel. This was only used on our last day and they closed off the road but you can still access on foot. This wasn't a hinderance and there was little noise and it was early afternoon.

Final note... My girlfriend left an item of clothing at the hotel. She called a day later, they had the item and the concierge on duty personally delivered it to her brother who was staying at another hotel. I would normally have expected her brother to have needed to go to them. Great service and very thankful.

Would stay again without a doubt.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Ambasciatori for one week in mid-October on a B&B basis. Anyone going there will not be disappointed. The location is directly opposite the football stadium, and is on a busy road, so there can be a bit of extra noise, but it doesn't detract from the outstanding surroundings and service. Breakfast is buffet style, with eggs & pancakes made to order, and everything a British or European traveler could want for. Reception (especially Fillipo) always greet with a wide smile, and nothing is a problem. I emailed them before arriving inquiring about dinner tickets for the Sorrento Musical (a great night out.) This wasn't a problem, and the price was 10 euros per person less than our major UK tour operator. They sorted a hire car with in a few hours, and were always happy to give advice and ensured our stay was as comfortable as possible. It's a short walk in to the centre of Sorrento, but about right for walking off the fantastic food you will be trying. Expect to pay hotel prices for food and drink.
