“Lovely hotel, best service in Europe.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

What we remember most is the view - Vesuvius across the Gulf of Naples, the sun setting behind Capri every evening, and the occasion yacht moored along the coast. But what we are most grateful for is the service - from the front desk to the beach bar - the warmest, most helpful people who only wanted us to enjoy our time there. We wanted the 21st century in an old Italian villa and that is what we got. The "beach" is a pier with plenty of chairs and umbrellas, where you can read, swim in sea, and sip Campari or coke all day long. There is a pool, a bit on the small side, but perfectly adequate with (again) plenty of chairs and shade and lush gardens all around. What makes it special? It's in lovely Sorrento, the lively centre is a short walk and once there, you can shop, stroll or just watch the parade of fashionable locals and less glamorous tourists. We took the train to Pompeii, the ferry to Naples, and drove the coast to Amalfi guided by the advice of the front desk. Our room was pretty, cool, and comfortable. We loved the half board - dinner every evening invariably offered the most delicious pasta dishes known to man, and the wait staff and maitre d' were helpful with wine choices. Our fellow guests were well behaved, and there was no need to race for sun chairs or food at the buffet because there was always plenty. The hotel is clean, the sea is good for swimming and even a bit of snorkelling, and there's often entertainment in the evening, some of it even good. My husband keeps listening to Torna a Surriento and I'm sure we will.

Room Tip: Make sure you have it in writing if you are promised a "full sea view" - we did and they...

My wife and I stayed here for 2 weeks on our honeymoon recently (September 2012) and we thought this hotel was fantastic! We were sold on the fantastic cliff top location offering superb views of the Bay of Naples & Vesuvius or Vesuvio if you're Italian!

Positive:
Location - only 5-10 mins walk to Piazza Tasso (Sorrento's main square).
Cleanliness - Hotel was immaculate at all times, our room was cleaned everyday by 10am (Grazie Rosa!)
Food - Top class, we stayed on a half board basis and the evening meal was very impressive every night, always different food/selections - No buffet here!!!
Beach / Pontoon – What a great way to spend your day, listening to the waves and watching the boats and cruise ships come and go! The Lifeguard (Bagnino) / Bar attendant was a chap called Ferdinando and he was a top bloke, saved our sunbeds for us everyday and was always up for a chat and a laugh!
Staff – Always very friendly, definitely a plus point!!!

Negative:
Everything is chargeable, there are no freebies here!!! Safety deposit was €3 per night as was Wifi (also €3 per day).
If you are B&B only then the evening meal would be quite pricey (3 courses for €50pp not including wine or water) so for 2 people with an average bottle of wine and water it would be €125!
No honeymoon upgrade! - Our room overlooked Sorrento Football Club (not a problem if you like football), although we did get the top floor which was a sort of upgrade! I suppose you only get what you pay for, I imagine if we was anywhere else in the world we would have been upgraded but as I have alluded to earlier, everything is chargeable.....

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hotel Ambasciatori, we would definitely come back but maybe only for BB and then explore more of Sorrento's bars/restaurants for dinner!.

Room Tip: If you want a swanky room, you will have to pay for it!!!

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for 11 nights, and we have really enjoyed the experience. The location and facilities are superb. We made the recommendable choice to select a room with seaview, and we couldn't get enough of the views from our room on the sea, the Vesuvius mountain, the Bay of Naples, and the activities going on before our hotel like cruise ships coming and going, and boat trips passing. The restaurant was very classy and the food excellent, as well as the wine list, of which we can recommend the local wines to any wine amateur. One night we enjoyed the outdoors à la carte dining and it was a truly unforgettable and romantic experience. The bars near the top pool as well as the bar next to the sea-level swimming area were very tempting, and we succumbed to the temptation many times. The service by the staff was very good too, but we have special good memories to the service at both bars, with extra credit for Angelo (bagnino) and Gennaro (level floor bars).

One negative experience was that on several (4) occasions, the hotel had also a wedding party going, and they seemed to struggle with the capacity to deal with both the parties and the hotel guests. One night it caused us even to wait for more than two hours before we could get our dinner served, and ended up sharing a table with two other guests who were so kind to let us sit with them.

Despite this, our overall impression is very good and we would recommend this hotel to everyone.

Room Tip: Take a seaview room.

Nice location with a great view and lovely surroundings. Beware of level of accommodation. We were placed on a lower level going down the cliff however we found it to be very musty and damp. A terrible smell. Reception area was lovely however for telephone and computer communication on Amy level the reception was very poor at all times. Hotel needs a make over.
Bed was very hard, pillows were uncomfortable and bath towels were very thin and course.

Room Tip: Ask for a room above the lobby level

This is an older style Italian hotel, which is beautifully maintained and spotlessly clean. Our room was a side, sea view deluxe room and it did not disappoint. Our balcony overlooked the pool area and the Bay of Naples. It had hand painted floor tiles, a modern bathroom, very spacious, high ceilings, air conditioning, mini bar, flat screen TV and very comfortable bed and pillows, with pillow menu. The breakfast was very good with a wide variety of foods to choose from and a lovely young man who would cook eggs, omelettes or pancakes to order. He always had a smile and took obvious pride in his work. All the staff were very professional, friendly and good at making guests feel comfortable. The pool area was very nice but we loved the hotel jetty with sun beds and swimming in the sea - it was my idea of bliss! Views from the dining areas were exceptional and overlooked Mount Vesuvius, Capri and the Bay of Naples. We had dinner twice at the hotel and enjoyed every course. The home made pasta with lobster sauce was the best pasta I've eaten anywhere. My only criticism of the hotel would be the old fashioned hair dryer which would have taken an hour to dry my hair (luckily I had brought my own with an adaptor), the tea and coffee set up at breakfast and lack of tea and coffee making facility in the room. The hotel is a 10 minute walk along cobblestone streets with some spectacular views along the way to Tasso Square, the main square in Sorrento and a 10-15 minute walk to both the train/bus station and marina from which you catch the ferry to Capri. We enjoyed walking and counted this as a plus rather than a negative. We would definitely stay at the Grand Ambasciatori Hotel if we return to Sorrento.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the side sea view deluxe room, but unless you intend spending most of your time in...

The Hotel was the highlight of our holiday in Sorrento, the rooms are clean and comfortable, the grounds are stunning and there are plenty of places to sit, relax and sunbathe, the food is divine - fresh, fantastic choices and served as though you are in a top restaurant but the crowning glory are the staff - they are a delight, very helpful and friendly and can't do enough to help (happy to teach you a few words in Italian too!!). We came away after a week here feeling rested, full of delicious food and happy in the knowledge that we were able to speak enough words in Italian to convey our thanks!! A gem in Sorrento (which incidentally in August is very touristy, and not the best place to go if you are looking to submerge yourself in Italian culture!!)

Room Tip: I would definitely ask for a sea view room next time (if only to watch the super yachts / cruises co...

I stayed at the Ambasciatori with my wife and two friends during late 2011, and I have to say that it is one of the best hotels that I've stayed at.

Situated about a ten minute walk from the charming centre of Sorrento town where there are many great restaurants to sample.

The positives:
Food quality and taste - excellent
Service – very efficient
Value for money - good
View of the bay of Naples - marvellous
Cleanliness - spotless
General atmosphere - relaxing

The negatives – none that I experienced.

Highly recommended.
