We stayed at the president as part of a wedding party of 15, and if someone is thinking of getting wed abroad i would recommend this hotel. Views across the bay of Naples looking down on Sorrento were wonderful. Staff at the hotel were really excellent and helpful in any way they could. The hotel sits high on a cliff looking down on the town and a regular shuttle bus operates either way. Rooms were of a generous size, plenty of hanging space and built in safe with an excellent bathroom as we were on ground level we had a good sized outdoor sitting area. Sea view rooms are more expensive. The roof top terrace was a popular place in the evenings with its views and comfortable seating. Meals on a half board basis were buffet breakfast and waiter service dinner and i found the food to be excellent with a good variety. I would say this hotel is ideal for a couples Holiday and not aimed at teenagers as children s entertainment was limited. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Enjoyed a lovely holiday at this excellent hotel. September, getting towards end of season, did not affect the level of service, cleanliness and dining experience. We had booked, following Trip advice, a superior room with sea view and balcony, worth every extra euro. Boutique style room was on floor 1 at top of hotel, had been recently renovated to a very high standard. Bed faced window and view out towards bay of Naples and Vesuvius in glorious sunshine first thing each day was fantastic. Room facilities include tea tray, so able to enjoy early morning tea/coffee, toiletries, pool towels, dressing gowns and slippers.
The dining experience is usual buffet breakfast including services of an egg chef who has yet to smile but makes super omelettes. Waiter service on roof terrace during the day whilst soaking up the sun and panorama of Sorrento is special. Dinner each night had a great variety of Italian dishes all prepared and served to a very high standard. Suggest they rethink the once a week buffet dinner. We had a very early start on our last day so the dining room was opened at 5.30 with a limited but perfectly adequate buffet for everyone.
We chose not to take the organised excursions. The complimentary shuttle bus to town with Tony always on time, never leaving anyone stranded, enabled us to get to trains and ferry with minimum of effort. Get to Pompeii early to avoid queues at ticket office and masses of cruise ship groups. If you are 65 or over take photocopy of passport with you as it gains free entry into most archialogical sites including Pompeii. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Pay extra to upgrade to sea view on floor 1 at top of hotel.

Stayed end of July for 10 days.
We had probably one of the worst rooms in the hotel, smelt damp, sheets smelled and felt damp at times, zero sunshine into the room &.view of the dreaded wall below the car park.
Did we complain? No, we just turned off the air-con which was making the room needlessly damp and cold.
Did we have a good holiday? Yes, we loved it; the hotel is a little gem.
Do we usually stay in good quality hotels? - Yes
Staff superb, views to die for, food fantastic.
Our advice is to do all of the excursions- highlight being both the Amalfi Drive and Amalfi / Positano by boat - fabulous and worth every penny

We had no problems at all with the courtesy bus - and it is essential as the President's position is difficult on foot.

Restaurant was brilliant and we waited each evening for a balcony table- 100% recommended to make your holiday feel truly special with such inspiring views of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius.

Enjoy

We have just returned from a lovely two week stay in this hotel. The room was lovely with a superb view over the gardens and the whole bay of Naples. This room was an extra cost to guarantee a sea view. Everywhere in the hotel was clean and gleaming. The food every evening was superb, sometimes not quite what you were expecting but always enjoyable with a good choice on the menu, further enjoyed by being seated on the restaurants terrace enjoying the view. All the catering staff were friendly and no request too much. Although located on the side of a hill, for those not able or willing to walk to and from the town, there was a frequent free shuttle bus. My only adverse comment would be that the pool is not heated and the water very cold even in temperatures of 30 degrees and was a real shock to the system when getting in. We would certainly stay at this hotel again but would do our own trips as the Thomson ones can be very expensive although very nice especially the Capri select and the Amalfi select.

Room Tip: Hotel is upside down so rooms at the top start with 1 and the bottom floor 4. Reception is on 1 and...

Just returned after spending 7 days with the family to celebrate my parents golden wedding anniversary. The hotel has a beautiful location, with amazing views over the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. We booked superior rooms which were very nice but didnt request a seaview so sadly we looked onto a stone wall with the car park above but we didnt spend much time in the rooms. We all enjoyed sitting outside early evening enjoying a drink before our evening meal taking in the view. The rooftop lounging area is lovely and very relaxing too. The bar staff are extremely friendly and offer excellent service. They also gave us a lot of other interesting info about the area. In particular Giuseppe with his lovely white moustache was quite a character and very helpful. The food was excellent, plenty to choose from and they even presented my dad with a special cake for his birthday after our evening meal when they noticed him opening some cards at breakfast. Luigi was the head waiter and would often recommend certain dishes, which were always delicious. Not good for the waistline though!!
The reception staff didn't appear quite as friendly though (which was the only bad point) and on one occasion when we had a problem with the lift, the manager wasn't apologetic at all. It was a very unpleasant experience which I'll not go into as everyone was ok but I always chose the stairs afterwards.
The shuttle bus to Sorrento town runs throughout the day but check the times as taxis can be expensive. The driver will come back for you though if the bus is full. We went on the Amalfi coast trip with Thomson, which was fab! Beautiful scenery, not to be missed and Ravello is something special. The coach drivers show incredible skill tackling those narrow roads! Capri is another trip not to be missed but we booked this ourselves and went on the ferry from the harbour. It takes about 25 mins to get there. The view from Ana Capri is incredibly beautiful. Sorrento town has some lovely shops and bars with plenty of places to buy your Limoncello from. We snacked occasionally at some pizza restaurants but often shared as the evening meal was always very filling. We chose to eat out at a restaurant one evening as we knew someone who worked there but it was quite expensive so beware! Some of my family had been to Sorrento 10yrs ago but they thought the President was the better hotel. We all agreed that this was one hotel we'd definitely like to return to again.

Room Tip: You may want to request a sea view when booking to avoid the view we had but this does cost extra.

You can't please all the people all the time; this well used quote could have been created to describe people's experience of their holidays. Things are further confused by what your expectations are, but we loved our two weeks at the President in Sorrento.
First the good things, view from our balcony was amazing!!!!! (Book AND PAY EXTRA for a guaranteed sea view) The staff ranged from good and helpful to excellent. Tony the shuttle driver, Antonio the singing waiter, Angela our maid and the head waiter all stood out as excellent (even if the head waiter said Buona Sera on days we came to breakfast after 9.00). Our room was one of the recently modernized rooms (120) and it was light and airy and overlooking the garden and Sorrento and the bay of Naples and Versuvius (I'll post some pictures). We loved the food - way too much of it - pace yourselves. A buffet Apéritif is followed by a starter (including a pasta dish) Main course (mercifully these are not too large) fish is good and a Dessert. Breakfast is the usual hotel fair - ask for a pot of fresh coffee (free), though the coffee machines are ok.
We enjoyed the Thompson trips. We were glad we did half days to Pompey and Herculaneum (it was hot and longer trips such as Pompey including Versuvius would have been too much) Amalfi select gave a good taster of Amalfi/Positano/Ravello. Solerno and Paestum was a l.o.n.g day but with a lot to see, but enjoyable. Ischia with gardens was good - if you like gardens! otherwise pick the Spa option. This is where the personal opinion stuff comes in, we enjoyed the trips as they gave a taster of what the area had to offer, we plan to go back under our own steam and see some places in greater detail using more public tranport, the Thompson trips gave us the info we needed to decide where we'd like to explore more. Some people hated the Thompson trips, felt they were too expensive, too restricting etc - pays ya money ya takes ya choice!
The only complaint we had about the trips was the set meal deals offered - avoid! We had one on the Amalfi select trip - average food and terrible wine! We opted out of the Salerno one - three courses on top of all the hotel food we were eating - no thanks. Had one of the three courses on the Ischia trip, was still charged for the starter and dessert we didn't want! Don't get dragged into the meal deals, buy your own lunch somewhere else, or do the British thing and take a packed lunch : )
Whilst I'm complaining, the gym was not air-conditioned and the weights machine was long overdue a service (the cables binded on some exercise making selecting the right weight difficult.)
We got great leather goods from "De Matino" in Sorrento and my wife got Italian linen from "Vanity" (both on the main side alley), lovely ice creams from "Dolce and Gelato" - main street beyond Piazza Tasso. We got ripped off by "Sorrento Souvenirs" on the main street - they passed off a plastic handbag as leather and didn't want to know when we complained. Carabinieri said contact Italian consumer department, local who overheard our conversation and Thompson rep said don't bother, you won't get far with them. so you'd best avoid Sorrento Souvenirs!!
Down sides to a holiday in Sorrento?
1. Traffic is busy all though summer and not that safe, you are brave to hire a car.
2. Lots of tourists! especially Brits, go somewhere else if you want peace and quiet. I went armed with Italian phrases I'd learnt, but didn't need them as almost all Italians in Sorrento know enough English to get by.
Down sides to the President Hotel.
1. Book and pay extra for the sea view, check you have it and check again! Almost all the people who complain about this hotel didn't get a sea view - because they didn't pay extra for it! Some travel agents say they will put a request for a sea view, but unless you pay extra you are NOT GUARANTEED to get it!!!!!! A room beginning with One is also desirable - the hotel is numbered upside-down and our room 120 was on the top floor. A large party from Brummie land were making a fuss because they didn't get the sea-view rooms they had requested - however we paid £70 a night more for our Superior grade room than they did for their Superior rooms and we got the sea view.
We'd quite like to see more of Salerno and Ravello, but if we go back to Sorrento we will definitely be staying at the President - paying extra for a guaranteed sea view!

Room Tip: Pay extra for a sea view (don't just request one and hope) get a top floor overlooking the garde...

We have just returned home after spending 10 days at this hotel. We made the mistake of booking a standard room at a travel agents without looking at any reviews online.
When we booked in we asked if it was possible to pay for an upgrade but sadly they were full. We were shocked at the first room we were given and refused it outright. It was awful, the small balcony had a tiled 4 foot high bench running the full width and faced into the room with no space for a table. No view.
The second which we had to take was not much better, was just outside the kitchen walkway, noisy, busy and no privacy. The furniture was tatty. Next day we asked to move again and were given a room facing the hedge below the car park and this was just about ok.
We must say that the public rooms in the hotel were fabulous, as was the food and we met many happy customers. However we were left with a jaded view of this hotel but more importantly we would not trust a Thomson Brochure again. This was our first time with this company, it will be the last.
