“A Very Special Place to Relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

My wife and I have recently returned from a week-long package holiday staying at the Grand Hotel President. I've joined Tripadvisor especially to comment on this hotel as I was so impressed.

Staff: The staff are friendly and the standard of service was very good. The hotel ran a free Italian cookery class on the Wednesday and the Receptionist, Vincenzo, helped the group to make three dishes with the hotel chef Alessandro. The staff seemed like one big happy, hard working family. Valentina, who runs the Spa, was also fantastic!

Meals: The food was excellent and I'm glad we were staying half-board as the dinner was 4 courses and very filling....we had a huge breakfast and didn't need to get lunch. There won't be enough time to sample everything on the menu as it changes daily.

Location: The views from the hotel were stunning. Sitting on the rooftop bar, restaurant or piano bar, we could see over Sorrento and view Vesuvius. I wasn't keen on walking 20 minutes down a path to the town but plenty of people did it. The hotel runs a shuttle bus to the town centre and that was very reliable. Tony the bus driver deserves a medal.

Room: The room was cool, clean and spacious and we weren't disappointed that it didn't have a sea view The view from the public parts of the hotel were so good that we didn't want to stay in the room for long.

Facilities: The pool is well kept but small. There is a small fitness centre (free) which has 4 machines to go on as well as pool and table tennis tables too. There is a Spa (additional costs) with a free Jacuzzi . There is live music to relax to in the evenings and the Wifi is free! I was able to access it pretty much anywhere in the hotel.

Advice: Extra costs mount up. Drinks are not free in the hotel so it may be worth buying bottles in Sorrento to keep in your room. There is a siesta in the middle of the day so check the shuttle bus timetable and get to the bus stop early.

This is a great hotel if you want to relax. It never seems crowded and is a wonderful place to enjoy the sunshine. This hotel made me feel looked after and valued as a guest. I hope your experience is as good as what my wife and I experienced.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good. If you have a Sea View then you will obviously pay extra. I'm not sure i...

We stayed at this Hotel in June of this year for two weeks. We arrived late at night but the Hotel provided a substantial buffet. The next morning when I opened the curtains I was amazed at the outstanding view of Sorrento.
The food is amazing and I must have put a good few pounds on in weight during that fortnight but it was worth it!
BUT, the next morning, I was woken just before 7am to this strange scraping sound from the floor above us. When we went for breakfast, I realised what it was. We were directly below the restaurant and as the floor was tiled, there was nothing to cushion the sound of people dragging their chairs, as people do. So, avoid the third floor overlooking the pool because that's where you will get an early awakening. I had a word with the Thomson rep and she managed to get us a room overlooking the garden and that was fantastic but we had to wait until the second week to get that. So, avoid the third floor rooms overlooking the pool if you want to get up when you want to get up.
The Hotel bus service was brilliant. Some people on Trip Advisor have complained in the past that the buses didn't run frequently enough during the mid-afternoon but the Hotel must have listened to this (well done Hotel) and have improved the frequency. Tony is a very helpful and pleasant man.
I would like to mention and recommend a restaurant we went to and were extremely pleased with. It's down a back street in Sorrento and is called L'Osteria del Buonconvento and we would highly recommend a visit. The staff and food are excellent and well worth a visit or more.

Room Tip: As mentioned, if you want to sleep until you want to wake up, avoid the third floor overlooking the...

Will definitely come back to this hotel. The food, service and overall ambiance are excellent, and the unrestricted views over the Bay of Naples are stunning. The only issue to manage is getting in and out of Sorrento town. It takes about 20 mins to walk down the mountain into town, but walking back in the heat is not really an option unless you are training for an endurance event! The hotel bus is the best option, but the frequency is a little limited and often gets full at peak times. The driver will always come back if you can't get on the bus first time. However if that is the price to pay for spectacular views, then just a minor inconvenience!

Room Tip: Get a room with a sea view

My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon. Wow, the views are to die for. It is worth booking a room with a balcony sea view as it is so... romatic and great exquisite views exposed.
The waiter service is truly attentive, they cannot do enough for you and also extremely professional in their job however friendly at the same time.
We booked as a half board basis. Breakfast had everything to offer from full English to fruit and continental. Dinner times were particularly fantastic as four courses were on offer with a great choice to order from. Food presentation and quality was in comparison with fine dining back home.
Our room was very clean snd spacious, the maid kept it clean every morning and kept it well stocked of shampoo etc and providing clean towels daily.
It is a bit of a trek into sorrento however the hotel has its own bus run which runs regularly and always on time without concern to report.
In terms of the pool its self, it is relatively small compared to what some hotels offer. We however had no problem lounging by the pool in terms of utilising sun loungers and also found that there was ample room in the pool.
If you fancy an adventure, there are plenty of things to do. For fantastic views why not take the boat over to capri island which is stunning in its own right.
All there is the almalfi coast line which needs no introduction of itd outright beauty!!!!
If its historical value you need take a trip into pompei and go to the top of mount vesuvius which is all offered from your holiday reps from the hotel

Thomson's 5 star Platinum Grand Hotel President sits perched high on the side of a mountain with panoramic views across Sorrento and the Bay of Naples. You can dine on the terrace (second floor) and enjoy the magnificent scenery as you savour the authentic Italian cuisine.

A standard twin bedded room with WC, balcony/ patio on the fourth floor means four floors BELOW ground level, with a view of a retaining wall that reaches upwards to just above ground level. The swimming pool is located on the fourth floor and some bedrooms can be found located underneath the swimming pool. Thomson's brochure/ internet specify that standard twin bedded rooms are located above ground level with a limited view across the hotel car park.

It took three days before I was eventually provided with the accommodation that I had booked and paid for. There was no apology or recompense for the hassle and disruption to my holiday.

A free digital security box is available in the bedrooms but you need to contact Reception for instructions on how to use it. A mini bar/ fridge is also available but is for the exclusive use of hotel drinks and snacks. If you wish to use the fridge for your own drinks and snacks there is a daily charge of 10 euros.

Access to the Grand Hotel President is via a heavy trafficked, steep, winding road with hairpin bends that is unsafe for walking and totally unsuitable for persons with mobility problems. A courtesy bus is provided at intervals throughout the day to convey guests down to the town centre. Be prepared to be stuck in the town centre for three hours between 12.15pm and 3.15pm and don't forget to catch the last bus back at 11.15pm.

Room Tip: Insist that your room is as described in the brochure

We found this a lovely hotel from the moment we arrived at the entrance.
The room was first class and always kept spotless by the room maid. There was a good choice of menu and the food was well presented by very friendly and helpful waiters.
Similarly the reception and bar staff were equally helpful.
There were views to die for from the restaurant balcony and indeed our room.
We did not find the pool area overcrowded.
In short would love to go again.
