We spent five nights here after years of hoping to do so. We had a gorgeous room overlooking the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. The room was spacious and spotless, with a very well appointed bathroom, with separate shower and bath.
From the moment we arrived we felt at home. Even the welcome was stylish and intelligent. They even humoured us when we wanted to speak in Italian, although their English is perfect and our Italian is not, alas. The service throughout was flawless, whether on the terrace, in the glorious breakfast room, or at the side of the pool where staff set up our loungers even before we had walked the few yards to the pool.
Breakfast consisted of a scrumptious spread. Over five days we never tired of it. It set us up for the day and compares well with breakfasts in similar five star hotels. Wherever we were in the hotel, on the terrace or in one of its beautiful lounges, we felt comfortable. It is all extremely relaxed: you can sit anywhere reading or chatting without feeling under any pressure to consume, but if you do, drinks or tea will instantly appear. The standard of maintenance of the hotel is astonishing: no peeling paint anywhere, no worn chairs: everything seems perfect.
Our only suggestion to the hotel would be to serve dinner on the terrace rather than at the poolside, as there is not much atmosphere at the poolside at night. We were surprised that it was not busier at night when many people might well have wanted to dine looking across the Bay at Vesuvius. The hotel might consider using its stunning breakfast room and let it spill over on to the terrace at night.for dinner. The exclusive restaurant on the lower terrace is, I am sure, very good. We didn't sample it because one of us is vegetarian and did not dare eat there because the menu was not displayed. Perhaps the Excelsior could put sample menus into the hotel folders in the rooms? And ensure that, as well as serving sea food, it also offers more 'conservative' options, vegetarian and other?
A woman pianist played exquisitely at breakfast; quite the most delicate stroking of the keys and setting the mood with famous Neapolitan tunes.
We were there for a big birthday. We had not of course told the hotel about this. We were very touched therefore when, on the day itself, the most beautiful flowers appeared in our room.
So much hard work and dedication go into delivering this kind of experience. You will feel an honoured guest in this classiest of old world hotels. Don't forget to explore the gardens while you are there: we spent happy hours in them.
Thank you all at the Excelsior, for your welcome, your high standards, your hard work.
