The restaurant was busy, and the food good but not spectacular or particularly cheap - so why would I recommend the Tavern Allegra? The whole experience takes some beating. We arrived, and the staff treated us like old and valued friends, welcoming and without a trace of insincerity. We ordered an aperitif and a waiter started playing the guitar and singing. Oh no, we thought - this is not one of those places is it? The chef (!) joins in with the singing, enthusiastic rather than polished. The venerable owner, a larger than life character, takes centre stage and starts to bring some of the other clientele into the action. The head waiter takes over and soon we are joining in - great singing voices are not a requirement. We are grinning from ear to ear. This isn't having to sit through rather dubious entertainment as we eat - this has become a group of friends, just having a good time. Adjacent tables of people chat to each other - the ice completely broken. Darn - it was fun. It works because it does. We hardly believe it ourselves - but are assured by our new friends on the next table that it is like this every night. What a shame we only discovered the Allegra on our last night! Try it, join in and rediscover how much fun you can have entertaining yourselves (with a little bit of encouragement from some lovely guys).
