Rick Steves gave this B&B a very high rating. Perhaps it was deserved several years ago; it isn't now, although it still represents a fair value since the price is right for what you get. It's a terrific location about 6 blocks from the train station (near the hospital--Ospedale in Italian) and it includes a nice breakfast--including fresh squeezed orange juice--at the owner's restaurant. Franco is the owner and the restaurant is Il Giardiniello. The restaurant has terrific food at very reasonable prices. However, it's a 5 block walk in the old town to get to it...we rather liked that part since the old town is quite fun.
However, the room was dirty. The mattresses were so worn that I ended up with a back ache every morning. And since the rooms are on the main drag--Corso Italia--it is noisy. You also have to lug your bags up 3 flights of steps (no lift). Franco's staff meets you at the B&B, and she knows no English, so we had difficulty communicating, but we managed.
For a budget traveler, this hotel is a good choice, unless you have back problems. We also had a difficult time booking this place. They often don't answer the phone, don't accept faxes, and have no email.
