“Not a Hostel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

My grand-daughter and I stayed for a week in March. From the moment we entered the marble lobby with sofas, and went through to reception, we had a wonderful time. The staff were ALL welcoming and so helpful, you felt nothing was too much trouble. We needed a gluten free (senza glutine) restaurant and 'La Fenice' just up the road under the bridge(watch out for mad scooter riders who are blind to pedestrains, and the barking shop dog) was great. A proper gluten free menu, really nice waiters and pleasant surroundings. The restaurant in the main square also produced gluten free rolls and pasta when we asked. And the great ice cream shop on the left as you walk towards the main square (not the first little square) with the masses of ice creams also produced gluten free pasta. The Spa at the hotel is only open from one some days and 3 others- and you need to be broad minded as Italian lovers think you can't see what they are doing if they are in water!! But you can. So avert your eyes and just enjoy the facilities - not cheap at 23 euros each. I would recommend this place to anyone - yes the breakfast is continental but that's where you are- and they give you plenty of cake /ham and enormous fresh oranges .

Room Tip: Room 204's shutters go up to reveal the opposite cliff with dwellings and two waterfalls, lovely...

My husband and I stayed at the Ulisse with our two children when visiting Sorrento for a wedding. I was nervous about the hotel due to the hotel referring to itself as a "hostel." I was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness and size of the rooms, the friendliness and service of the staff and the nice lobby area. The rooms are definitely utilitarian in decor but comfortable. The setup fit us perfectly with a separate bedroom and second bath for the kids. The hotel was within easy walking distance to shopping, restaurants and even a (rocky) beach. We stayed two nights at the Ulisee for less than it cost us for one night in the other hotels where we stayed in Italy. In short, stay at the Ulisee if you want to save money, want a convenient location and excellent service but not if you require luxurious accommodations.

I can't understand why they short change themselves by calling it a hostel. This place is more of a hotel, very clean and new looking. Very tremendous value for the price we paid. The staff was very helpful and acoomodaring. The rooms were spacious and large. Best this was the breakfast was included and it was than fruit and cereal. A little further away from the more expensive hotels but not bad if you are a walker.

This hotel was located in the inner part of Sorrento. It was a nice hotel. It had a nice open lobby area. It didn't have a ton of amenities, but was a decent place for the price. It was less than $100 per night, if I remember correctly.

The two positive things that stuck with me the most were the friendly staff and the continental breakfast. There were a lot more items for this breakfast than many of the other hotels. And the fruit was very yummy, especially the watermelon, which looked off color, a lighter, dull red. But it was the best watermelon I’ve ever eaten. The espresso or coffee from the automated machine was also quite good.

Another cool thing was the shower head that changed colors, from red to blue, to green, to yellow. That was kind of neat. The bath and shower were one piece and the bathtub was very deep, deeper than most tubs, although not very wide or long. The shower also had good water pressure.

The biggest negative was the hard bed, but that doesn't necessarily seem to be unique to this hotel, but Italian hotels in general. We found the same hard beds in Rome and Florence as well.
Another negative was that there were no wash clothes. But again, this doesn’t seem to be unique to this hotel. And we had heard that Italians don’t really utilize wash rags, prior to our trip. So this was not an unexpected surprise.

Some other nice things : the AC worked relatively well compared to other hotels in Italy. Some of the hotels have governors on them, so they won't go very low, like below 75 degrees F. Italians aren't big on cool air. They don't mind things being hot. So having this AC working better than normal, was a plus for the Hotel Ulisse.
The room did have a fridge and free Wi-fi, which all hotels do not. The rooms were clean and the hotel was about a 10 minute to the train station and about 20 minutes to the marina.

All in all, this was a pretty nice place.
But if you're staying in or near Sorrento, you might choose a hotel that is nearest the water, as the ocean is beautiful.

Room Tip: Staff was very helpful and nice. Pretty nice continental breakfast. Beds and pillows were hard.

Stayed here for 3 nights and visited the Amalfi coast. Great value and the hotel is only a leisure 10-15 mins walk from Sorrento train station. Rooms are clean and the neighborhood feel safe. Breakfast was pretty good and most importantly the coffee was strong unlike some other hotels in Italy. The reception staffs were all very friendly and helpful and won't hesitate to offer help if you need. You can read more about my trip at my blog http://www.travelathousandmiles.com/italy/

This was our budget option on a recent trip to Italy. It worked out quite well for the most part - accomodations were clean and very adequate for our needs. It was a bit far from the train station and at 15Euros each way, I wonder if it might have been a little better to spend a little more and stay closer to the train and town. We opted not to have the breakfast at 7Euros per person and were able to get coffee and a pastry close by for substantially less.

Room Tip: Our rooms were next to each other (a good thing!) but overlooked an interior courtyard which was a l...

We had a very comfortable room and enjoyed using this hotel for a week as a base for sightseeing. Our room had nice open views to the east, and was serviced every day. We had a TV although only three channels seemed to be available; fortunately one was CNN.
The reception and lounge area was well appointed and the reception staff were very helpful in giving advice on transport and places to visit.
The continental breakfasts were really excellent - a good selection of juices, hot drinks, fruit, cereals, yoghurt, breads, cakes, ham and cheese.
Although the hotel does not have a restaurant there are plenty within 5 or 10mins walk. For those not so fit do be aware that you have to ascend a steepish slope (or steps) up to the town centre!
There is a car park on the hotel roof, which could be convenient if you have a car.
The ferries are within 15mins walk, the rail station abut 20mins.
