Castle from mid-evil times 1100 AD. They sure knew where to build their castles. Took a private car to Pompeii and Herculano. Stopped here on the way. Great history. At night, they turn the place into a disco. Was no thrilled to hear that. I am glad I made the visit.

“Fantastic view!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

What a magnificent view of Salerno and the Tyrrhenian Sea! Getting there is easy: just walk to Piazza XXIV Maggio and take bus 19. Unfortunately, there is no bus schedule, nor any signs for orientation. Wait for the bus at the stop with the traffic going in the other direction than the sea. By the way, you cannot pay with money in the bus. Buy a ticket at one of the many Tabacchi around! Once you've arrived at Castello di Arechi you are able to enjoy the view for free. However, there's a small fee to be paid for the entrance to the small museum. (The museum, and its collection is almost 100% in Italian.)

“Great view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

Great view, bigger than you think and easy to reach by bus. This makes Castello di Arechi worth the visit. Never done it, but you can also go completely by foot from the historical centre.

“Not easy to get to, but breathtaking views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

The castle, on a steep hill above the town, is not within reasonably walking distance from it, so the car is almost an obvious choice. But the signage is poor: we accidentally ended up in a blind alley in the hills.
The castle is beautifully restored (it is also a congress center). By the walls you can enjoy wonderful views.
Be careful if you ask for information to citizens: "Arechi" (the name of a Lombard Duke who ruled Salerno) is the name given both to the castle and to the football stadium. Therefore you risk to be directed to the stadium, at the southern end of the city

“Views of Salerno, to the south and west are awesome”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

.

Interesting place to visit if only just for the views of the city and the Amalfi Coast. The castle itself is not that interesting and the museum it holds is quite small, however it is a castle and part of history and that was enough to tempt us to have a look.

A bus from central Salerno has a stop at the entrance path to the castle and takes about 5-6 minutes, although we found the frequency is a little longer than other bus services around Salerno.

Our total trip time to the castle and back was about 3.5 hours and made an enjoyable afternoon. Would suggest that you get an idea of the return bus timetable so you can plan when you should make an exit from the castle in order to meet the bus at the entrance as the buses are not that frequent. However the walk back to central Salerno would be an interesting one.
