“Excellent service and breathtaking view - perfecto!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

This hotel was indeed a unique experience from Antoinetta, the most gracious and helpful host, to stair lift to get you and your luggage up and down, to the pool and the views. Antoinetta was absolutely great and made sure that I had no trouble getting to the hotel and that all the details were handled well. She emailed me regularly so that there wouldn;t be any glitches. Her English is really good and she genuinely cares about making the experience splendid. The only downside to this hotel is that it requires taking a bus, which sometime runs once an hour. But the location also offers breathtaking views and a chance to get away from the hoardes of tourists coming in for the day. Great place to relax and recharge!!

If you're looking for a unique experience, this is the place. It is so gorgeous you're tempted to stay at the hotel rather than go into town. It's on the side of a cliff, full of plants, palms, and paradise views. There's several lovely outdoor places to sit including a big covered veranda in the middle. The rooms are OK, but you're really here for the location, the family who runs it, and the views. Breakfast was nice and generous, and unlike other breakfasts in the area, you get a savory 'croque monsieur' along with the continental sweets. The family also has lemon orchards and cultivates vegetables on the cliffs around the hotel. Antonietta speaks English very well, and the rest of the family communicates very well without it! They were very sweet and helpful, and welcoming.

The only down side (which is also the up side) is that it's on this cliff, so you can't just run back to the hotel and get a jacket. In the morning you can walk down the cliff on steps to Amalfi (about a 20 minute walk down if you don't stop and take gorgeous pictures and peek into the lovely homes and courtyards on the way down). In the evening, if you're too tired to climb back up, you take the bus to Pogerola from Amalfi (10 minute ride) and stop at Hotel Excelsior. Then you walk down steps to Le Palme, or you take a series of 3 chair lifts (it's faster to walk down, but steep). The chair lifts are how you get your bags up and down too.

I would definitely go there again. You have to have good knees and not want to run back to your hotel every 5 minutes. Enjoy!

My stay at Le Palme was wonderful. The service was excellent and the people were so friendly, made you feel welcome right from the beginning. One of the highlights was the pool and the views. Breakfast on the terrace was amazing. Breakfast in general was great. Homemade sweets and even cooked dinner for us. Rooms are spotless and spacious, especially by European standards. Another plus was that the air conditioner worked well, important for the hot months of the summer.

Perched on the side of the cliffs overlooking Amalfi the quality of the views from Le Palme cannot be overstated, fantastic only goes part of the way to describing the sights from their terraces.

We booked a week here as a base for a romantic getaway to the Amalfi Coast and couldn't have been much happier. The nightly rate is excellent considering the pool, handsome breakfast and proximity to Amalfi itself. The room was basic but has all the expected amenities (en suite, fridge, TV) and the scenes from the double French doors over the coastline elevated it to far beyond what was expected from the modest price tag.

If I were to split hairs then the one improvement I would ask for would be that when arranging for some flexibility on breakfast times (e.g. an early coffee due to leaving for a day trip) the message seems to struggle to transfer from owner to morning staff and on a couple of occasions we fell foul of this.

As discussed in other reviews, there are a lot of steps. The easiest way to reach the hotel is to take the Pogerola bus from Amalfi and get off at the Exelsior Hotel stop - this is visible from a long way down the road so you will have plenty of warning, don't worry! Steps (around 300) lead down to the left half way down the Excelsior driveway, for luggage there are lifts that follow the handrails of the steps I wouldn't recommend using them for much else as they are quite slow!

Alternatively you can walk up (quite literally) the path from Amalfi consisting of around 800 steps and you will work up a sweat. This shouldn't be attempted until you have already walked down from above as finding your way up the cliff without prior knowledge of the route would be nigh on impossible without a map (and I mean Ordnance Survey standard not free from the rent-a-car office!).

Please don't let the potential difficulty in locating the hotel put you off, once you've done it once it's easy and the walk down to Amalfi each morning is packed with wildlife, lemon groves and, of course, those views.

Nice friendly place to stay, comfortable and a good bed. Stunning views down into Amalfi over an excellent breakfast. Swimming pool was a bonus!

The location! This place is no where near Amalfi, it's nearer to The mountain top village of Pergola. You can get a bus to this village from Amalfi. Do not attempt to walk from Amalfi to the hotel with luggage, it will kill you! The walk only takes about 20 minutes to Amalfi, but when they say it's a cliff walk they mean it! We like to walk and have a good level of fitness but this walk is tough! Additionally our room was located next to the families living room and on two nights they mads noise until late, keeping my wife awake.

We stayed her in July of 2010. The service was excellent! We stayed in the slightly more expensive top room, well worth the money. The walk to Amalfi town was the perfect way to start a day or finish it after a big meal and a glass of wine.
