“Not so good location, awesome service!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2011

Finding a good place to stay on the Amalfi Coast might be a difficult task to accomplish. We stubbled upon La Pergola on tripadvisor and decided to give it a try. Most reviews had been very encouraging.

The hotel is situated on the road connecting Amalfi to the neighboring towns such as Positano and Sorrento. The views from the room windows gaze on the sea and forest surrounding the hotel. Indeed, like the other reviewers said, there is a bus picking up guests in front of the hotel. Although it’s a very good way to travel to the other towns, it sometimes can get quite frustrating. We visited the Amalfi Coast during high season and the entire bus system was quite busy and undermanaged. A couple times, we could not even get on the bus because it was packed. We had to wait in Amalfi for an hour for the next bus to the hotel. When we did finally get on the bus, we were squeezed in tight with all the other tourists. Thankfully, La Pergola is only just 10 minutes away from Amalfi.
As for the bus tickets, they can be easily bought at the hotel or at any tabbachi you find in the towns on the coast. It is possible to walk from the hotel to Amalfi, but being an half hour walk, I would never recommend doing so with children or for older people, as sometimes the road can be dangerous.

The rooms were very clean, simple and cosy. We stayed there in the month of August and the air conditionning was included. Although, without the AC, opening the windows keeps the room actually cool. If you plan on sleeping with the windows opened, be aware that the main road is situated right in front of the hotel, you have to be expecting some traffic noise, but nothing to keep a deep sleeper from waking up.

The only problem we encountered with the rooms and the cleanliness was that on one morning, we found a dead bug, that came through the window at night, that was being eaten by an army of ants coming in from the walls. I immediately told the staff and they proceded right away to clean the infestation and after we left, clean the entire room.

The staff was amazing, they translated the menu from italian to english and then to french, helped us plan an excursion to Pompei, gave us advices and directions to getting to the beaches and restaurants in the area and even gave us the bus timetables. As for the restaurant in the hotel, expect simple and tasty homemade Amalfitani food made by who we guessed was the mother.

In overall, a really good value for the services and comfortable rooms but on the other hand, unless you have a car, the location isn't that great. We enjoyed or stay, but next time we plan on staying closer to the main towns or visiting in the low season.

Thank you Sara for taking such good care of us. The rooms were cleaned very well everyday, new sheets, towels, the works, we had a massive terrace (Larger than the room), two large doors that swung open, air-co. The only slight negative...the bed was not too comfortable, but we found all beds in every hotel in Italy were the same, we stayed in four hotels.(all the same). Huge modern well equiped bathroom.
Delicious free morning breakfast, great expresso. Free computer for guests to use, able to purchase bus tickets and tours right in the hotel, lots of great help and advice. They booked everthing for us... Sara made a dinner reservation for us in Positano, and requested the most glorious table for us,when we got there, we were very surprised. we appreciated it very much, was a table with a fantastic view purched over the sea,....very very nice.
45 minute walk to into Amalfi, we did it ONCE ...took the bus everytime after.. 5 minutes...much easier and stops outside the hotel. Be prepared..busses are a hair-raising adventure...one tour bus accident when we were there ...oyy, but also saw a taxi flip over in Rome...very fast drivers in Italy. We did manage to get our rental back with only one banged side mirror :-) (GET Insurance)
We took a TomTom...you need it made our life easier, as we drove from Rome.

Garage parking right in the hotel...tight, but they parked it for us so no problem.
Overall...highly satisfied.

Room Tip: request a balcony or terrance room

You receive excellent service whilst staying at this hotel, everyone is welcoming, friendly and very helpful. The rooms are kept well and are very clean.
Fantastic place to eat, fresh home cooked food, using local fish ect it is also great value.
Whilst walking to Almalfi it gives you the opportunity to admire the beautiful views and explore what the area has to offer. However there is a bus stop (sita) outside the hotel if needed.
The hotel arranges a variety of trips for you, where these are well organised, to the attraction and back again, you pay for the transfer at the hotel and pay for the attraction when you arrive. I learnt more about the history of Almalfi and Italy from the tour guide than i did on the sight seeing buses.
Look forward to our return.

Room Tip: rooms cleaned, towels changed each day. room with a balcony where you can sit in private. You can he...

I booked this hotel from Trip advisor. The hotel is family owned and a little gem. The room was a little small but it was cozy, comfortable, clean and has its own bathroom. The family made us delicious italian home cooked meals. The mother cooked, father or son waited the tables. We loved evenings talking at the bar and they even made us a bottle of their own lemonchelli. Walk up hill to the hotel but worth it. A little ways away from the noisy town. Close enough to walk to bus or get to other towns.

This is a beautiful small family-run hotel. It is spotlessly clean, the rooms are comfortable, the staff are welcoming and friendly and the food is excellent, much of the fruit and vegetables coming from their own garden behind the hotel. The local Ravello wines they serve in the restaurant are a perfect accompaniment to the meals. The owners also make their own liqueurs which are highly recommended. Amalfi is easily accessible either on foot in about 25 minutes, by the Sorrento bus which stops right outside the hotel or by the Pergerola bus which stops about 200 metres away - this one is usually less crowded. I would recommend this hotel to anyone - it is less like staying in an hotel, more like being a guest in someone's home.
