“A special hotel in a special place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2009

My wife and I just returned from a vacation on the Amalfi coast of Italy. It is an exceptional place , a little hard to get to but well worth the effort. We spent our first two nights at the Floridiana hotel in the town of Amalfi. We picked it because of the great reviews on Trip Advisor and the hotel was everything the reviewers said it was !! Agnes and ALL her staff were just marvelous. Nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to help in every way. The hotel is perfectly situated in the middle of the small town, everything you want is only a short walk away. We were a bit worried about noise as we overlooked the main street and went to bed early to recover from jet lag . We closed the shutters, turned on the air conditioning and could not hear the outside world. The breakfast was an extensive Italian offering. We love the traditional european fare so we did not miss a heavy cooked meal. No wonder the locals look so fit !! The dining room at the Floridiana is spectacular! the ceiling might have been painted by a Grand Master!! so different.Amalfi is a beautiful small town wlth many places to visit close by. Capri, Positano, Ravello, Pompeiiand and Sorrento to name a few. This is a great place to stay if you are lucky enough to find youself on the magical Amalfi coast. John and Joanne

Located right in the centre of Amalfi (just off the square), this is a great little hotel. Not great to look at externally but more than makes up for it inside. It was modern, clean and plenty of aircon. We booked directly with Agnese at the hotel via months before and it was so simple. Agnese is very efficient, helpful and friendly and you couldn't get better customer service. All the staff were very friendly and excellent. We only had one problem while we there which was the aircon one morning. However, Agnese got it sorted that afternoon with no fuss!!

We flew into Naples airport and then travelled by car to Amalfi which is about 40 miles. Takes a while by car (1 hour 15 mins) because as soon as you get to the coast the roads are narrow and winding. This goes on for about 15 miles and I would recommend travel tablets to anyone with a weak stomach!! Would recommend a sat nav as the directions are a bit confusing on leaving the car park at Naples and the road signs are not that clear on route. When you arrive at Amalfi look out for the road on the right (under an arch before you get to a small tunnel). There is a 'no entry sign' and usually a policeman on duty. Just tell him you are staying at the hotel and he will let you through. Please note that the road is closed early in the morning (7.45am - 9ish) and at lunchtime (12pm - 1.30pm) beause of the school so if you arrive during these times you will have to park up and wait. The road is only narrow and runs through the square and the town so watch out for the shoppers as there are no pavements. About 50 yards from the entrance look out for the traffic lights up on the wall. The road is only big enough for one car so you may have to wait for 5 mins or so. When turn green, drive up through the town (about 200 metres) and you will see a garage on the right with 3 green doors, this is the hotels garage and where you need to park. The attendants will park for you. You will then need to walk back towards the square and the entrance to the hotel is via a small alleyway about 4 metres from the traffic lights by the square. Make sure that you give Agnese the details of your car when you arrive.

The hotel only offers a basic continental breakfast (i,e, doesn't do lunch or dinner) but it really doesnt matter as there are many cafe's and restaurants within a minutes walk. Amalfi is small but friendly and vibrant and there is a lovely cathedral in the square which is well worth a look round (Eur2.50). Only downside is that the church's clock chimes the hour which can be a bit annoying in the morning!! The port is small but they do run boat trips to other towns, coast tours and trips to Capri which takes about 1 hr 20mins. You can get a list of the boat times from the hotel. Amalfi is built into the mountain so everywhere is quite steep with numerous quaint little alleyways with steps so if you have mobility issues, this may not be the right place for you.

Pompei is only about an hours drive back towards Naples and is well worth visiting. If driving don't take the first turning towards Pompei Est (east) wait to the next main turning and follow the historical signs. Be careful to only park in the blue marked bays on the road (you will need a ticket) but best to park in the car park which is about 50 metres from the entrance to the ruins. Ignore the people from the tourist centres along the road as they will try to rent you a recorder (with ear piece) and a map for Eur10. Best to pay at the entrance (Eur6) where you will get a free map. The Pompei site is very big so allow at least 4-5 hours to get around it. There are bus tours available to the volcano but maybe too much for one day.

Ravello (where most of the Italian footballers get married - and Gary Lineker!!) is about 5 miles drive from Amalfi and worth a visit for the great views.

On way back to airport it is best to plan carefully and leave plenty of time. We followed the satnav and whilst we found the airport ok, it took us through naples and took 2 hours! I am sure that there must have been another way around the city. Also, re leaving for the airport, it is very important to note the times the Amalfi road is closed for the school kids as you will not be able to move your car.

All in all, a lovely convenient location, great hotel and wonderful customer service. Would thoroughly recommend.

We chose Hotel Floridiana because of the reviews on Trip Advisor and were very happy with the good size rooms and the friendliness of the staff. We were a group of nine adults & all of us enjoyed our 5 night stay. The hotel is central and very convenient. When we arrived our bus dropped us quite a distance away from the hotel but this was not a problem as the hotel employs porters to handle luggage. The only small problem was because we were leaving at 0645am we were told by Agnese that we would have to handle our own bags as the porters started work at 0800am. Fortunately we were able to contact the porters ourselves & they started early for us. I would suggest that if you have an early departure make arrangements direct with the porters when they take your bags to the hotel.

I am the pickiest traveller, and yet every positive review written about this hotel is true. The Floridiana enables each guest to enjoy a serene Amalfi experience, making the most of everything this exceptional area has to offer while letting you forget about the crowds, the noise, the hassles of finding your way around alone... Thank you Agnese and your team for a great time and fantastic memories!

Agnese , the hotel owner and Eva ,the receptionist were most helpful in advising on restaurants, sights, travel, and shopping.
The hotel is the cleanest we have every experienced and information on its history was freely given.
Whilst we were there it was our 40th wedding anniversary and Agnese helped to make it very special. She told us of restaurants in the area and recommended we visited before booking- the restaurant on the beach was so romantic with excellent food & wine. A wonderful holiday

My hubby and I had stayed there for three nights in the junior suite. It worths every single penny of it. Just wish we could stay there longer.

The room is very spacious and spotless, I am a clean fret because of my health issue. The owner Agnese is extremely helpful. The staff is very friendly. The location is excellent. The breakfast is good.

If we have to find fault for this hotel, the only thing I would suggest is to provide extra towels and floor mat for the jaccuzi area.

If we ever going to come back to the Amalfi Area, this will be the place we would like to stay.

We stayed at this hotel for one night only. It was a Tripadvisor 'Winner' and for this reason, we chose to stay here. The hotel is bang in the middle of Amalfi, very close to the cathedral and perfectly located to enjoy all Amalfi has to offer. We got off to a bad start as, after the somewhat difficult drive along the Amalfi coast, we were unable to contact the hotel by phone to find out where they were or whether they had any parking. (This was because we had booked through Expedia and had been provided with the fax number for the telephone number). The upshot of this was that we found private parking and paid E20 to stay overnight, before later finding the hotel on foot. We were given a very friendly welcome by the reception staff, who seemed very concerned to find out that we had paid to park the car when they have their own garage facilities which would have been included in our room rate. To compensate us for this, they offered to deduct half our parking costs from our bill (unprompted by us). Our room, a junior suite, was clean and comfortable enough although decorated in the Italian style with shiny blue tiled floors, jacuzzi, loud colours in the furnishings and, as is so often the case in Italy, a very hard bed. Breakfast in the flamboyant dining room with its painted ceiling and opulent decor, was a buffet with the usual continental breakfast but also eggs, cheese and cold meats. We very much enjoyed our stay and felt the hotel was good value for money. We also commented on how important a good welcome is to one's sense of wellbeing when staying in a hotel.
