“Great place to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2009

We just got back from two days in amalfi. We stayed two nights here. We emailed back and forth to set up the reservations and everything was just as described. They set up the transfer and that was handled very well. We loved our stay. The room was great. Very clean. Great breakfast. We were able to sit on the balcony one morning and have a great start to the day. They were very helpfull with buses and how to get around. I can not say enough good things about it.

During our 4 weeks in Italy, Residence Del Duca was the stand-out accommodation. Daniela, Andreas and their dad Gerardo were welcoming and helpful and the room we occupied for 9 nights was a real delight. Location and outlook were terrific, and the 80 steps worth every breath! (see YouTube for the climb). Our room was immaculately presented, tastefully decorated with a spacious ensuite and multi-function massage shower - great after a day's walking. A bonus was the large terrace with its comfy table and chairs and sun lounges which we made full use of. All this over-looked the Piazza dei Dogi and Cathedral spire with ocean glimpses to the south-west. The majestic Torre dello Ziro is also clearly visible. The main street, bus stop and beach are all very close to the hotel.

A vase of Asian lillies appeared in our room one day, after Daniela had been to the market and this was typical of the hospitality. We loved the freshly brewed coffee at breakfast and freshly picked tomatoes and greens appeared one morning from the dad's own garden.

Residence del Duca is a wonderful boutique hotel in a fascinating area of Italy.

Booked this hotel in Feb/March for 2 rooms for 3 nights.
This was done directly with Daniela over 4 e-mails back and forth. Rooms were confirmed and credit card details given for guarantee.
On arrival we were told of "small problem", 1 Room only tonight but there will be 2 rooms for the following nights.
As a relatively experienced traveller i can think of only 1 reason for this, Greed (trying to maximise room rental) and in turn bumping a booking in the hope that they will go to another hotel for 1 night and then come back the following.)
Which Daniela, to her credit did suggest.
We, as a group decided this was not good enough, so we booked into another hotel for all 3 nights.
Did not actually stay here so i can not comment on the accommodation side of things.
But we were extremely disappointed with the lack of professionalism.

Each room is individually decorated, with lovely antique reproductions, and very comfortable beds. Our room had a high coved ceiling and a balcony, our friends had a large terrace. The bathrooms have been updated with the latest and coolest showers - multi heads spraying all over - wonderfully refreshing after a day of enjoying the coast!
And in the high season, summer, rooms were so reasonably priced at 140 euros/double, including breakfast.

We stayed here for 3 nights and loved every moment. The room was huge (for Italy standards and the best we found in 5 weeks of traveling through Italy), comfortable bed and very personalized service.

There are over 70 steps to get to the hotel, so this is not for everyone.

Our stay at the Residenza del Duca was everything we had hoped. The room was spacious, it had a fantastic shower and even more importantly it had a gorgeous view. We were fortunate to have the room adjacent to the breakfast area so we also had a huge private terrace with chaise lounges. A fond memory will always be the day my husband and I were outside resting in those lounges, (after a long day in Capri) and a woman from the building next door provided the soundtrack to our moment by singing as she hung her laundry.

The breakfast was delicious. I will never forget the taste or color of the juice made from blood oranges. And the lemon cake they served was amazing.

Daniela and her staff were incredibly helpful in advising us on both the boat and bus schedule as well as recommending restaurants. On our last morning we had to catch a 7:00 am bus to Salerno so we could catch the train to Florence. Though this was far earlier than breakfast was served, Daniela offered to leave a cold breakfast out for us so that we had something to eat on our journey. This is just one example of the fantastic service.

We can't wait to return. After taking tours through both Positano and Sorrento, I would still stay in Amalfi at the Residenza del Duca. We loved not only the hotel but also how the entire town came alive at night.

We stayed here as part of our Honeymoon in Italy becuase of the reviews on this site and we weren't disappointed! Our room was lovely and big and very clean and the hotel owners were really friendly and helpful. The breakfast was fresh and plentiful and the coffee was excellent. The minor downside was that we didn't really have a terrace - just a window that opened up onto another building. However, there was a room located next to the breakfast room which had a huge terrace and looked amazing. I guess this was the suite so make sure you book this if you can! This is a fabulous place and I would like to go back one day.
