“Clean, quaint, great location, and private... definitely would go back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2011

It's a bit of a walk up the main street (5 minutes from the centre) - but gives you an opportunity to get out of the small main center and closer to feeling less like a tourist. Great breakfast buffet and view, and the gents managing are very accommodating. Also, the shower is very easy to use. Wifi is available from the main area which is nice, clean, and bright - but you should not be on the net while on vacation anyway! (There is also a communal computer here available in multiple languages - French, Russian, English, Italian and more). I very much liked that there was a mini-espresso bar inside and the team there was always willing to make me one :)

There is a small series of steps to take your luggage up and then you can access the elevator. I challenge you to try the steps (sans luggage) - great short workout (hills are everywhere). Also consider bringing some hiking shoes and walking through some of the mountains there - Not easy I suspect but wish I did.

Key things I did that the team (Luca, Alessandro, Nello) at Villa Lara suggested:
- Ate at Donna Stella pizza
- Walked to the neighbouring town for dinner
- Had a small boat take me to a private windsurfer beach
- Went to Ischia (and visited Europe's largest thermal spa - Posiedon - 3hr trip so be prepared but worth it!)

(PS. Luca speaks French, English, Italian and maybe more. I was amazed to how many languages some people on my trip spoke!)

Enjoy your trip!

(Amalfi was a great place to kick off my trek across Italy)

Like other reviewers before us, we had a fabulous stay. Feel confident of making this hotel your base for the Amalfi Coast. The friendliness and service from the staff is superb. Eating breakfast (or lounging) with this view is the best setting for a meal we had during our five day stay. Unless you don't like small and intimate, Villa Lara will make your vacation memorable.

Two travel tips: we weren't sure we would like visiting the Isle of Capri due to all the tourists. We went anyway and walked to the Villa Jovis, Emperor Tiberius's residence for 10 years. This trip took us far from the crowds. Take the funicular up to the town center & follow the ceramic tile signs out of the town center to the ruins. We stopped at family-run Bar Jovis, just 10 minutes from the villa for wine, refreshments & a gorgeous view.

We also went to Pompei, and thought we'd be fine using our guidebook tour. If you don't want to drive a car yourself, I'd pay for a tour from Amalfi. The day we were went, the Pompei ticket booth had neither a map of the site corresponding to the numbered ruins nor a description of those numbered items in English. Someone in our party spoke Spanish and translated a Spanish guide for us, so we had some information, but I wished we had a live guide. The public transportation connections are doable, but take energy to navigate.

All the praise is true, but our story has a little twist. We had what most travelers dread: the medical emergency in a foreign country. Because of Nello's quick thinking and calming nature, a situation that seemed quite frightening was well-handled and my husband received the help he needed. The twist? Because we were hotel-bound for a few days, the lovely atmosphere of the facility, the glorious views from our room, and the unfailing kindness and cheer of the staff made this, ironically, the best vacation we've ever had. True, we missed some of the great sights and side trips, but on balance, we experienced so much more. Thank you, Nello and Villa Lara, we'll be back.

We visited Villa Lara in the fall of 2010 for 3 days to see what it was like. We loved it so much we went back again in April for a week. The accomodations were clean and welcoming. It is difficult driving in the town of Amalfi, but Villa Lara offers free parking in a garage. The staff are so friendly - they helped carry our luggage to the room as everything in Amalfi is up stairs, and bringing us cappuccino in the morning on the balcony. Nello was very helpful when we needed information on day trips from Amalfi. We have recommended Villa Lara to friends who have also gone and enjoyed it. We look forward to our next visit which will be longer.
There are many things to do in the area - hikes, bus trips and boats to neighbouring towns. We took a boat trip to Positano and a bus to Ravello. We enjoyed great food in the restaurants and loved the beautiful cathedral and bell tower in town.

The quiet location of the hotel-yet a short stroll to the center of the town- affords a splendid view of the famous town, the port and the rock hill facing the hotel. The friendly and efficient service was matched by immaculate cleanliness. We stayed for six nights and my wife and I had the feeling that if we had to just stay in the hotel we were having an enriching experience of Amalfi.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Turqese and thought if perfect .

The Villa Lara is very cute and comfortable B&B in Amalfy:-)
It's about 15min walk from the port through the main street.

The room was very clean, and comfortable. I'll stay at this place again next time I visit Amalfy.
Internet was dial up connection, so it was very slow..... but better than nothing?
