“Grand Surprise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2014

This hotel was a great surprise! My friends and I got this stay with a tour bought on Viator and WOW! We were definitely not expecting the amazing views and AMAZING service! I cannot express how nice the staff was to us... Our room was spacious and again, the view was AMAZING! The private beach is great to just relax. The dinners at the hotel were also delicious! The only "complaint" I would have would be the WiFi but who needs to be on the internet with the amazing-ness surrounding them, not me!

The Grand Hotel Excelsior is a gem - beautifully situated above Amalfi itself with the most wonderful views. You can have the best of both worlds here - you can travel down into the town and experience the hustle and bustle or escape from it all with brilliant walks in the foothills of the Lattari mountains. There is a very useful book - the Sunflower book of walks for the area which we can highly recommend. The wild flowers and butterflies are wonderful in May. The food is excellent and beautifully presented and all of the staff are so friendly and helpful - they made a big fuss of my husband on his birthday. The rooms in the main hotel are very spacious and everywhere is spotlessly clean.

The view is indeed the best thing about the hotel, the food is the worst. We ate there only once during our week long stay. It was that poor. I felt sorry for the Dinner, Bed and Breakfast guests.

We were put into the external accommodation just above the lemon tree's. To begin with we were a bit put out by this but we grew to love the little rooms with a fab view.

The shuttle bus is vital to this hotel and well worth taking advantage of. We also went up the hill for a cheap and cheerful dinner and drink. Cheapest Limoncello on the coast there too!

We spent a week here as part of a package holiday and found that the upper rooms - with the magnificent views - were allocated to guests staying only for a few days. We had a room on the ground floor, overlooking the gardens with a glimpse of the sea through trees. Although clean and comfortable, the room was adequate if a little tired. Food was reasonably good but portions were very small and if you wanted to upgrade to a la carte, your pre-paid for table d' hote meal was not offset. Breakfast was good if you stuck to the bread, pastries and t-bags. Coffee and juice was from a machine and disgusting. Because of the position of the hotel, there was no sun in the pool area after 3pm which was very disappointing. The staff were incredibly efficient and friendly. Antonio, the maître d' greeted everyone by name and was on duty from breakfast until last serving of dinner. The deck-chairs around the pool, added to the old fashioned ambiance of the hotel and the view from the terraces - a different one for breakfast and dinner not to mention the bar area were breathtaking - but I'm afraid the view wouldn't temp me back to this hotel. Amalfi is beautiful and if I returned, it would be to a hotel in, not above the town, where we could venture out in the evening without having to pay for a taxi.

We stayed a few days in this beautiful place, the staff were courteous and helpful, the views from the terrace where you have breakfast or dinner are amazing !! A bit of a trek to the town but the courtesy bus provided a good service . We had a room with a view of the coast and the sea it was a pleasure to wake up to. Rooms could do with a reno but overall clean and comfortable.

Room Tip: I'm not sure if all the rooms have views but ours did and it was fantastic ...open the door and...

I only stayed for two days & wished I had had time to stay much longer, but it was a great place to stay and rest my feet after eight days of exploring Rome.
I had a wonderfully large room with all amenities including mini bar, and it was amazing to wake in the morning to the beautiful views of the Amalfi coast. I had a large balcony with table, chairs, and lounge. Just wonderful to rest my weary feet !!! Without having to leave the hotel, there were spectacular views from everywhere in the hotel.
Breakfasts and dinners on the balcony were fantastic as was the food. There was a good selection of everything you could think of and the service was terrific.
I found all the staff , especially the receptionists , to be very obliging and nothing was a problem for them.
I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone, and I know I will be back sometime soon and I will be certainly staying much longer.
Thank you to everyone for a very enjoyable stay.!!!.

Four of us stayed at the Excelsior recently and were pleasantly surprised with the standard of the hotel. The views are amazing and the courtesy bus to and from Amalfi was a bonus although it was necessary at times to get to the stop early to be sure of a place. There are other local buses which also run on the same route but they are not cheap and it would have added extra expense if we had needed to use them continuously.
The bedrooms in the hotel are spacious although somewhat dated and tired. The staff were, on the whole, pleasant and helpful and the food in the dining room was excellent with good choices on the daily menu. We were on a half board package and had originally intended to eat out some of the time. We found, however, that the food on the Amalfi coast is generally very expensive and the hotel offered a much better option.
I would certainly recommend this hotel for a relaxing stay.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the better the view.
