“Four Nights at Amalfi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

Our stay at he Excelsior Grand Hotel was excellent. We had a suite on the top floor, and our balcony included an area of roughly 40'X 40' of deck. The only potentially negative thing was the mattress, which for my wife was a bit too hard. For me, it was OK. The staff at Excelsior Grand were fantastic. I can't list them all by name, but all who came in contact with us were excellent and very helpful. We had more contact with those who spoke English, and there were a few, which made our stay even more relaxing. Salvatore, the bartender, was excellent, and he had a great personality. Annie, at the front desk, was SUPERB! We loved her. She was so helpful with everything. Thank you Annie. Although the hotel seems at first far from everything, it is not. There are GREAT restaurants just up the street (Gerry's, e.g.) from the hotel. Also, there is a stairway from the hotel that takes you down to the town of Amalfi. The hotel has a free shuttle that takes guests too/from the Almalfi city center. Can't say enough about the hotel and staff. Definitely would go back.

Room Tip: Ask for room 609. Huge patio. Similar for the rooms at the end of each floor.

The last time I was here was about 14 years ago with my parents. It was certainly my parents' favourite hotel and I can understand why.
The view is simply breathtaking. After an exhausting day of sightseeing, it is great to return to the peace and tranquility of this hotel.
Nothing much has changed at the hotel since my last visit. It is still a bit dated but for me that just adds to its charm. My room (309) was clean, well maintained and had a fridge but no safe. Free wi-fi in the reception area and there was free use of a computer. I was here for 12 nights and wish it had been longer.
Free hotel bus shuttle to and from Amalfi. The ride takes about 15 minutes. There is also the Sita bus for 2.50 euros. You can also walk down to Amalfi (up as well if you are fit!). The small village of Pogerola is just up the road and is a great place for a meal, drinks or gelato.
Breakfast was included and had everything you would want including scrambled eggs, bacon, cold cuts and cheese etc. also some great home made pastries.
Restaurant and Reception staff were friendly and helpful.
I am so looking forward to returning to this hotel again.
Andrew

April 1973 we spent our honeymoon at this hotel. It was faultless, accommodation, staff, meals, location we recommend it 100 per cent.
April 2013 we returned with brother and sister in law to have a lovely holiday and celebrate our fortieth wedding anniversary. Sorry to say we were disappointed.
The hotel is dated and tired. It's in need of refurbishment. With the exception of Annie on reception the staff lack personality. The Management were most uninterested that we had returned to celebrate our fortieth anniversary, no champagne !! The breakfasts were boring, coffee from a machine, our celebration dinner disappointing, no tea / coffee provided in rooms, hotel noisy as they were holding a music festival, room service charges even for a pot of tea. The only good thing we could say was there is a lovely swimming pool with a marvellous view over Amalfi. Until this hotel does a complete refurbishment and overhaul of services and facilities, it is expensive. The Amalfi coast and towns are beautiful but gridlocked with people and traffic, the drive along the coast road is hair raising.

It was a bit out of the way but easy enough to take the bus down into Amalfi. The hotel was a bit outdated but the view from our terrace more than made up for that! It was very clean and the staff was very helpful and friendly.

Great "60th modern" architectural Hotel with excellent and helpful staff. Fantastic view over the Amalfi slopes covered by lemon and orange orchards. Our room (N0. 609) had an huge terrace with views over the Amalfi bay. Furniture and appliances are very old fashion (only the windows have been replaced lately). Charming in breakfast and dinning room, but bedrooms definitely need a face lift.
Excellent dinner in the hotel restaurant with fresh and nice presented local products at very affordable prices, including local wines. Some improvements ideas for the hotelier: extend the hotel shuttle in the late afternoon and please include fresh orange juice at breakfast buffet (otherwise excellent with many local specialties, especially pastries). The water supply in the shower changes within seconds from very cold to boiling hot and should be also improved for a 4 stars hotel. Such hotels should promote strongly local bio products, this will be in the future the recipe for success.
We enjoyed from far away to hear a donkey laughing...

Room Tip: Our room (nr. 609) was very quite and with fantastic views.

The Grand Hotel Amalfi is situated high above the city of Amalfi and offers excellent views over the town, the wild/romantic coastline and the Gulf of Salerno. The Hotel itself is very familiar with friendly and helpful stuff in every parts. You fell like at home from the first day! The rooms are friendly, good furnature, balkony to south side, pool, bar, restaurant, good menue and local wines, all together a very godd mix for relaxed holidays.
But the best of all are the grandios services ... thank you for this.

Room Tip: choose a room in the fifth or sixt etage to the sea

We stayed at this hotel as part of a tour for 2 nights in mid-April 2013. As far as I could tell, every room has an ocean view. And what a view it is! This is what you are paying for. Normally we would not stay out of town without a vehicle, but the hotel offers free shuttles at specific times during the day. The reception staff also will help you plan trips along the coast via local SITA buses or ferries. The room was without a safe but it did have a working air-conditioner and mini-bar to keep your drinks cool. We were told there was free Wi-Fi but only in the reception lobby area - we however were able to pick up a connection in our room. All staff we encountered were very friendly & helpful.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 504 with a view mainly towards Amalfi. Wonderful views with a balcony to sit outs...
