“No Espresso...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

Nice hotel with excellent view and friendly stuff. An update would help though. The suites are nice but a little uncomfortable (two floors). The restaurant "Tato" has very nice view but very small portions.
Completely unacceptable to be in Italy and not to have espresso coffee with breakfast...

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon. We stayed at the Excelsior Grand Hotel for three nights. It was terrific. The views are unbelievable and the staff was extremely friendly. I can see how the hotel may seem outdated, but the decor brings an old world charm with beautiful porcelain tiles and antique furniture. If you are looking for a ultra modern hotel, this is not the one for you. If you are looking for a classic Italian resort, you will be pleased with your stay.

It is a bit far from the town of Amalfi but the hotel does provide shuttle services. Going from the hotel to the town, the buses are not crowded. In returning on the last shuttle of the night you will be packed like sardines on a winding road. At this time of the night better to use the public bus for 2.40 euro a person.

We did not experience the beach or travel to th beach but we enjoyed our time at the pool. The pool was large and faced the ocean. It was a perfect way to relax and avoid the heat. I could see how people can complain about lack of chairs but there wasn't a time where we were unable to get them. I would stay at this hotel again!

went to this hotel with some trepidation as i had read some harsh reviews of this hotel. However can i say the reason we went to this hotel was for the views and they are breathtaking. Yes the hotel could do with some updating but as you are in the amalfi area you need to get out and explore so the hotel is a really good base. We liked that the hotel was quiet, the food was excellent,I love italian food, the staff did everything they could for you if you asked. A special mention to Antonio the Head Waiter, he rememebered every guest and made a point of talking to everyone at breakfast and supper.
The Hotel was very busy as the week we went was an Italian Holiday so lots of italians were on holiday, but there was a big fireworks display in the next town which because we were so high up we could see from the verandahs. As we prefer to do our own thing on holiday we felt this hotel suited us, however there was a very mixed clientele with older ertired couples to newly weds and also young families
Can I just also say August was incrediby hot, and we spent a lot of time trying to get into the shade so if anything I would advise going at that time unless you like it very hot!

I stayed at the hotel in August 2012 for 2 weeks. I really enjoyed staying there! Yes, it's isolated on the top of the rock, but the views are amazing!

The standard single room were average, very clean but nothing special. Every single room except the room on the 1st floor doesn't have a terrace, only a french balcony. I stayed at room 101, many people write that the walls are tpp thin and you hear everything, but and I didn't hear any noises even during a breakfast time (though it was served on my floor).

The breakfast was average, a lot of tasty backed goods, good coffee from a coffee machine, but a poor variety of main courses - we had only bacon, omelette, cheese and salami every day. But rolls and buns were perfect! Yogurts and cereals were tasty too.

The dinner was perfect! Maitre d' Antonio is so nice! He makes your stay exceptional. The food is very good, classical Italian cuisine, pasta or soup for start, fish/meat/vegetarian for a main course. For dessert we could choose a chef's dessert, ice-cream or fresh fruit (melon, grapes, peach and plum).

As the hotel is isolated, there is a shuttle bus which goes from 07.45 a.m. till 10.45 p.m. (last ride from the beach is at 17.15). Many people says that there is nothing to do in the hotel after dinner, but you can take a shuttle bus at 9 p.m. down to Amalfi and come back at 10.45 or at 0.50 a.m. by SITA bus (2.40 Euro per ticket but nobody pays attention to whether you have a ticket or no). Taxi costs 30 Euro one-way from Amalfi to the hotel.

The beach is in 10 minutes journey by a serpentine road, price is 10 Euro per person, it includes a sunbed and a sunshade. The beach is perfect for kids and those who don't swim well (other hotels have platform beaches where it's very deep in shore). The sea and the beach are very clean, the water was very warm in August, +28C I suppose.

I'd like to warn everybody who is made sick while going by car, The roads are of a real serpentine, 180' turns are every 20 metres. So going down to the city centre and back will be a great challenge.

In general, you can find many drawbacks (like an old furniture, hard beds, average breakfast and a long way to the beach), but an extremely friendly staff compensates everything! It feels like you're the only guest, everyone knows your name and your preferences. And the views are awesome! And the air is very fresh. That is what we lack in megapolis. I'm very critical, but now I have only a positive impression! :) And I'd like to thank Mr. Antonio for his perfect work, for his attentiveness and politeness.

Breath taking views staff extremely helpful and friendly but no room around pool not enough sunbeds and they don't lay flat so you are stepping over bodies layed on the floor! Rooms are very tired and need some TLC.

Room Tip: All rooms have a stunning view.

This hotel was the most affordable luxury (more like luxuryish) and available hotel for my dates. the pictures seemed cool however, once you are there the first thing you realize is that the hotel does not have a beach. It does but you have to take a scheduled bus to get there + pay for the sunbeds. So not so nice. The hotel is like a decor from a 60's 70's movie and that is quite nice but the cleaning seems to have been done back in those days as well so not so nice! We payed 390€ for our stay of 2 nights. If it were 200€ I wouldn't be complaining, definitely not value for money.

After a long exhausting drive met in the stifling hot un inviting reception foyer Details on logistics of the hotel done at great speed ushered very quickly to our room. When.... The door opened what a shock out of date room 60 's bed as hard as a rock with rusty base replaced by a board fridge that did not close tv that did mot work (you will meed one nothing to do after dinner)

Shuttle service isanother bother rushiing to get a seat stand if you miss out .you hold on for your dear life around the long 25minute winding road
The private beach is shared with others 10euro each time you use it extra for the towel.

If you miss he shuttle which cuts out in the early evening 30 euros to return so if you contemplate venturing after dinner from the hotel the only way back is by Sita bus (if the service is not striking)we were at the hotel when there was a gas leak on the mountain so we were isolated until the problem was repaired consider this no way off.the meals are rotated if you paid for half board the pasta is under al dente Small portions budget meals. Waiting staff are a great asset to the place. Giovanni and antonio.
the reception staff are far from helpful too busy to answer any questions.

Pool area congested not enough chairs there are only chairs not sun beds nor enough umbrellas so even if you get to the pool early they are taken up with people's belongings even if they have not returned for the day. Rim around the pool yucky sticky film if you get this on your bathers it does not wash off
would I ever return to this place definitely not I would listen to the negatives a bit more closely next time.
