“Nice hotel, excellent position”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2011

The Hotel la Bussola is a nice family hotel. It is billed as 4*, but the rooms are not really quite up to this standard. The hotel is located just 150 metres outside the old city, overlooking the bay. this is in some way an advantage, as the old city is easily accessible, yet you avoid the usual problems of staying inside a medieval town - lots of stairs, narrow street, noise from the ever-present scooters, etc. I stayed there in the winter, a very quiet tourist season on the Amalfi coast, but there were still quite a few guests, apparently retired Italian pensioners from northern Italy staying for several weeks at the time - obviously a cheap holiday in a warmer climate for them. The room was adequate, and well furnished, but rather small as is so often the case with Italian hotels, with hardly enough space to walk around the bed. The most charming aspect of the hotel was the double doors opening to a wonderful sunny balcony, with views over the fantastic bay of Amalfi. The breakfast was more than adequate, in a very pleasant breakfast room again overlooking the bay. The Hotel La Bussola also has its own undercover parking, right behind the hotel cut into the rock face, a great advantage if you travel by car. In the winter season the prices were also quite reasonable at around 80 euro or so. This would be a perfect hotel for staying a few days or longer, exploring the Amalfi coast.

Room Tip: A great hotel for exploring the Amalfi coast, within easy walking distance to the old city of Amalfi...

This hotel was very disappointing - not 4-star quality. The room had no airconditioning so we had to sleep with the shutters open at night. The breakfast was limited and poor - rotten fruit on display and coffee not very nice. The staff were indifferent and failed to pass on information to us from a tour company, almost resulting in us missing our tour. There were ants in the room, the television barely worked, and the telephone was not working. The town of Amalfi though, was lovely, and we did enjoy our time there - nice restaurants.

During our time on the Amalfi Coast we had opportunity to visit other resorts and check out the general locations of other Hotels but none could possibly have suited us better than La Bussola.

The Hotel is such an easy and "FLAT" walk from the harbour, the bus terminus, the town centre and a huge variety of restaurants - unique in itself for this coastline - and the staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. They really were prepared to go that extra mile.

The hotel really does have that family run feel and the views of the harbour from the front rooms could not be better. The balconies are small but large enough to sit out on. Admittedly if early to bed the voices of people walking on the road beneath the hotel carry to the room but as there are no bars directly below this noise does not normally go on late. Also you do get some traffic noise from behind the hotel but the way Amalfi lies I cannot imagine this could be avoided when staying at any hotel which does not involve climbing a cliff top get to it! By the way the shutters very efficiently block out any daylight so be prepared to set an alarm if you do have to rise early during your stay!

The breakfasts were perfectly acceptable - some tomatoes and cut up fresh fruit or fresh fruit salad would have been a bonus but there was a large selections of cereal, bread, danish pastries, croissants, meat, cheese, eggs, jams, juices etc.

We can also highly recommend the walking tour the hotel suggested we go on of Amalfi.

I would not hesitate in recommending La Bussola to others.

Room Tip: The harbour views are worth the supplement and will be quieter than rooms on the road side.

Very nice family run Hotel across the street from the water, just 5 minutes walk from the center of town. Not as chaotic as if you would be staying in the center of Amalfi. Room was very large with an outside balcony over looking the harbor. Had a pull out couch to accommodate additional people. Breakfast was OK as well as Dinner

Stayed 2 days in September 2011. Vicenzo was wonderful and welcomed us to our room which overlooked the marina. Just chilled in this beautiful area of Italy and enjoyed swimming across the road from the hotel on their sundeck platform. Balcony just great for sitting and having drinks and people watching. Loved it.

Room Tip: We had a superior room - they face the sea.

We stayed in Amalfi for a week in this lovely property. The location at the end of the harbor is perfect. The room was large and we had a terrace overlooking the water. The best part of the experience was the staff. They made great recommendation for restaurants and tours. The greeted us every time we came in. One of the staff has been there 45 years! With turn down service, this really should be a four star hotel. It was the best service we had in Italy. The breakfast is OK. Don't eat at the restaurant though, with so many great places in Amalfi we thought it was only so/so.

Room Tip: Make sure you request a room facing the water. The first floor rooms have the largest terraces.

We stayed here for 7 nights on a Page & Moy organised tour. The hotel is on a quiet road with its own bathing platform right on the marina. The main coast road is immediately behind & above the hotel and was occasionally noisy at night. The centre of Amalfi is just a 5 minute walk and buses & boat docks are even closer. Our 2nd floor room was dated but our balcony had great views of the town and constant boat action. Beds were very comfortable and maid service was faultless. Unusually the mini bar prices were reasonable, beer 3e, 1/2 bottle of wine 6e, juice 2e. We thought the room safe was a bit much at 3e per night. Breakfast was ok but there was just one toast machine and a tiny egg boiler for DIY use. You paid extra for omelettes. Dinner was also ok but choices ran out even when arriving at 8pm (service until 9)Service was good though and the staff were pleasant. Overall we were happy with hotel.

Room Tip: We liked our room no. 235
