“Made our honeymoon!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2010

It took me a while to finally write this review, but every time I think back on my honeymoon, the Santa Caterina hotel was the most memorable venue we stayed at. The staff was unbelievably hospitable, the rooms were amazing, restaurant 5 star, and grounds magnificent. My husband and I had a beautiful room with a balcony and large bathroom with Jacuzzi. Beautiful to wake up in the morning, take a step out on to your private balcony have the sun hit you in the face while looking out at the water. Santa Caterina also knows how to keep the vibe romantic for us honeymooners. The restaurant was so amazing, we decided to have dinner there every night of our stay! I really can't say enough about this establishment, but I will say we can't wait to return in the future!

The Santa Caterina is a beautiful hotel, in a stunning location. Views from the restaurant are of the sensational Amalfi Coast. The food was very good overall and having dinner on the terrace was so romantic. The best part of this hotel is the immaculate service. Pino the head waiter was charming and courteous. The owners are incredibly friendly and very welcoming also. What this hotel lacks in terms of room luxury and quality of interior in communl areas it more than makes up for in service and warmth of staff. Smell the Lemon trees as you walk around the hotel and take in the views. I ate at the Hotel IL San Pietro near Positano and also visited Le Sirenuse for comparison. The San Pietro is a really beautiful hotel with equal if not better views and excellent food. However, I would stay at the Santa Caterina every time!!

Beautiful hotel clinging onto the rocks just outside Amalfi. Excellent suites, though go for the ones high up rather than on subterranean floors. Outstanding service - best in Europe (Asia is better since as good without expectation of heavy tipping). Dramatic drop-lift takes you down to gym (surprisingly well equipped with TV cross-trainers, albeit small room) in turret overlooking the surf. Great valet parking. Excellent new year's eve event with surprisingly good band. Very expensive in all respects (rooms at least $800 a night, dinner at least $60 per head even for minimal content). The local city of Amalfi has a stunning Duomo but otherwise is a sordid ripoff in terms of food (excepting the Michelin starred Caravella, which lives up to its name) - in general though the 30-minute-away town of Ravello is the gem of the whole region and worth the trip alone. Nice spa. Hotel restaurant is good not great. Only real downside of the hotel is the rock-hard beds, which rendered elusive a good night's sleep. Also the drive along the Amalfi coast is twisted and ghastly, with psycho locals parping and overtaking on every turn.

It is virtually impossible to describe the beauty of the Amalfi coast, along with the Santa Caterina property itself. While there are certainly far more opulent 5-star hotels, the elegant and classic simplicity of the Santa Caterina provides the perfect base to enjoy the treasures of the region. At a minimum, you will want a sea-view room for the stunning and tranquil views. As others indicate, food service at the hotel is excellent and a sunny morning in the breakfast room is the perfect way to start the day.

There are, however, many wonderful places to eat along the coast, so press the staff if necessary for recommendations, as we felt the concierge was a bit too focused on keeping us in house for dinner, but perhaps that was because we were early in the season and the hotel was not overly busy.

We chose Santa Caterina and do prefer its location to the several other fine choices in the area, but I would recommend at least going to the gardens of the Hotel Caruso in Ravello. Both the gardens and the views are stunning and merit a stop, unless you happen to choose the Caruso for your stay.

We looked for ages to find the right hotel for the second week of our honeymoon. We were not disappointed; the hotel reception rooms were glamourous and beautifully decorated with antiques and pristine white squashy sofas; the floors were handmade white tiles decorated with a profusion of painted flowers. Everywhere we looked was a Wow. The restaurant was a triumph with open air terrace and spectacular views and breakfast here was a joy with the most delicious pastries and fresh fruit that we've ever tasted. Dinner at the Catarina was delicious and the service from all of the staff was amazing ; most of them had been there for many years and they created a wonderful ambience and old fashioned service that many hotels dont give now. The General Manager, Mr Armondo, was one of the nicest people I have met, he escorted us to a wonderful junior suite set in its own grounds that was like being in heaven. The interior was all white and gold with magnificent views from all sides of the room; the jacuzzi being situated in front of the side window for that wow factor. The bathing platform and pool area were cleverly designed; being fashioned from the rocks right at the bottom of the cliff. This was James Bond glamour! We had the Med as our own swimming pool and top class service from the staff. Although expensive, it was worth every penny and we had a wonderful honeymoon experience that we will never forget. Bravo!

We arrived at the Santa Caterina in late October and stayed for four night leaving on November 2, 2009. We drove in our rental car from Naples to the hotel. DON'T EVER GO TO NAPLES!! If you can, take a train to Sorrento instead and rent a car from there.

The hotel was/is absolutely AMAZING. I think they'd brush your teeth for you if you asked them. Our room had a balcony (all the rooms do, I think) overlooking the sea and to the left you could see the actual town of Amalfi. We had Proseco (I hate Champagne anyway) upon our arrival, with an assortment of Italian cookies and quite a large plate of fresh fruit to enjoy.

Our room was extremely white...I think all the rooms are. I loved that is was white....one reviewer complained that there is no art on the wall...but that is the esthetic beauty of the room, it envelops you in white and entices you to want to go on the balcony and experience the blue of the water and the lush green gardens below.

The service was/is spectacular. Keep in mind, we went during the last week of October, early November, so we had no issues with a crowded pool area, reserved seating with respect to lounges around the pool area (read in another review). Everything here is expensive, that shouldn't be a negative about the place...anyone who has written a review complaining about the price of everything, shouldn't have gone there, it is to be expected. We were on our honeymoon so we did splurge on this hotel and knew it was going to be expensive. We had breakfast there every morning and the breakfast is truly wonderful. The options are endless and it is a buffett, so you can fill up, lol! We had dinner there once, only because it is very expensive. The dinner was excellent and the service was too. We were on our last leg of our honeymoon and we had a very busy itenerary early on...it was nice to truly relax at the Santa Caterina and be waited on.

There are some reviews on here mentioning that you only get good service if they know you're a regular or if you tip well. The only time we tipped was when we asked to eat breakfast outside on the terrace. Keep in mind we're Canadian, so although it may have been too cold to eat outside, we thought it was warm! We tipped because they had to actually set a table for us and they did it with such ease and made it look exactly like the table inside and we weren't made to feel as though we inconvenienced someone.

We literally spend all day at the hotel...by the pool (for two of our four days, we could actually swim as the water in the pool was very warm 27 C). They have books to read which are scattered throughout the hotel and there are some very good selections, you just have to look...after being at the pool all day, we would take advantage of the shuttle service and have lunch in town and then walk back to the hotel and then nap and again, take the shuttle back down to the town and have dinner there. We also had a rental car and went to Ravello for the day.

If my husband and I are ever in a position to afford to go to the Santa Caterina (we really saved for this because it was our honeymoon) we would definately go there again and again. Just a great place to relax and be pampered.
