Beautiful hotel clinging onto the rocks just outside Amalfi. Excellent suites, though go for the ones high up rather than on subterranean floors. Outstanding service - best in Europe (Asia is better since as good without expectation of heavy tipping). Dramatic drop-lift takes you down to gym (surprisingly well equipped with TV cross-trainers, albeit small room) in turret overlooking the surf. Great valet parking. Excellent new year's eve event with surprisingly good band. Very expensive in all respects (rooms at least $800 a night, dinner at least $60 per head even for minimal content). The local city of Amalfi has a stunning Duomo but otherwise is a sordid ripoff in terms of food (excepting the Michelin starred Caravella, which lives up to its name) - in general though the 30-minute-away town of Ravello is the gem of the whole region and worth the trip alone. Nice spa. Hotel restaurant is good not great. Only real downside of the hotel is the rock-hard beds, which rendered elusive a good night's sleep. Also the drive along the Amalfi coast is twisted and ghastly, with psycho locals parping and overtaking on every turn.
