To begin this review, I need to tell you that we stumbled upon this cooking class suggestion as an alternative activity for a rainy day. We stayed at the Hotel Grand Excelsior in Pergola, Amalfi and noticed a small sign posted in the lobby offering a cooking class at a local restaurant. Due to the weather and location of the hotel, we decided "why not take a class?". It turned out to be one of the best ventures of our entire vacation in Italy so far (the trip isn't over yet). We were met in our hotel lobby by Manuele (works in the restaurant) and driven up the road (about 2 minute drive) to the restaurant. We were happily greeted by the entire staff Gimo and Lucia (owners), Umberto, Fabio, Marice, and Rita. We were taken to the kitchen area where we learned how to make some of the most delicious and uncomplicated recipes I've ever tried. Gimo showed us the preparation while Lucia translated the lesson into English. We were made to feel very comfortable, ask questions, and even help. After our lesson, the table was prepared and waiting for us to have lunch and eat the amazing meal that we just prepared. The wine was great, the food was amazing, and the Limoncello (they make it themselves) was unbelievable. From appetizers, to drinks, and dessert to cappuccino, I did not have one single item that I can say anything bad about. To be honest, we loved our lunch so much, that we returned for dinner. The staff was so happy to see us return for the second time in 1 day and we were made to feel like family as soon as we walked in. The service for dinner was impeccable and the food was incredible. As an appetizer, we ordered the Arrancini (rice balls) and Croquettes. This is something we have been trying to conquer at home for some time now and we loved the Arrancini and Croquettes SO MUCH at La Carcara, that we asked Lucia if we could return for another lesson to learn how to make them. Lucia and Gimo were more than happy to accomodate a second lesson (an early sunday morning) where they not only picked us up from our hotel again, but had breakfast waiting for us as well!! (amazing). We began the second lesson of the weekend and learned to make arrancini (we discovered the one step we have been doing wrong and that made all the difference!), gnocchi, two different pork dishes, and a second dessert. Again, we were fed like a king and queen with prosecco, wine, and an amazing meal. As much as we would like to try another restaurant while we are here, to be totally honest with you, we are most likely going to just return back to La Carcara.
In addition to the amazing cooking lesson and even better food, the scenery from this restaurant (the amalfi coast) is breathtaking (even in some of the worst weather we have had during this trip). A++++++++ Please don't miss this gem!!!!
