“Great out of the way restaurant. Well worth the detour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

Eaten here twice, once in the evening and once at lunchtime. Strongly recommended by the concierge at the Santa Caterina, which in itself is praise indeed. Its worth the journey to have fabulous home-cooked meals in a family run restaurant, especially if a car comes to pick you up; there are fabulous views across the valley to Ravello, but without any of the attendant crowds. A slightly different menu, cooked beautifully, and served in style by Lucia and her family. Umberto is a smiley translator. The warm seafood salad is worth the visit alone, but all the meals are tasty and seem even more so if eaten on the open-air terrace above the restaurant looking out over the verdant valley reaching across from Pogerola. Worth finding early in your trip to Amalfi rather than later.

“Great cooking course”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

We had a great experience at the La Caracara cooking course. We also ate our four course lunch, made by chef Gino. We had watched and learned with the assistance of Lucia and Umberto as we had no Italian. However, it made no difference as cooking is the universal language. Great fun and great value, as the lunch, wine and limoncello included! Highly recommended!

“An Absolute MUST!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

To begin this review, I need to tell you that we stumbled upon this cooking class suggestion as an alternative activity for a rainy day. We stayed at the Hotel Grand Excelsior in Pergola, Amalfi and noticed a small sign posted in the lobby offering a cooking class at a local restaurant. Due to the weather and location of the hotel, we decided "why not take a class?". It turned out to be one of the best ventures of our entire vacation in Italy so far (the trip isn't over yet). We were met in our hotel lobby by Manuele (works in the restaurant) and driven up the road (about 2 minute drive) to the restaurant. We were happily greeted by the entire staff Gimo and Lucia (owners), Umberto, Fabio, Marice, and Rita. We were taken to the kitchen area where we learned how to make some of the most delicious and uncomplicated recipes I've ever tried. Gimo showed us the preparation while Lucia translated the lesson into English. We were made to feel very comfortable, ask questions, and even help. After our lesson, the table was prepared and waiting for us to have lunch and eat the amazing meal that we just prepared. The wine was great, the food was amazing, and the Limoncello (they make it themselves) was unbelievable. From appetizers, to drinks, and dessert to cappuccino, I did not have one single item that I can say anything bad about. To be honest, we loved our lunch so much, that we returned for dinner. The staff was so happy to see us return for the second time in 1 day and we were made to feel like family as soon as we walked in. The service for dinner was impeccable and the food was incredible. As an appetizer, we ordered the Arrancini (rice balls) and Croquettes. This is something we have been trying to conquer at home for some time now and we loved the Arrancini and Croquettes SO MUCH at La Carcara, that we asked Lucia if we could return for another lesson to learn how to make them. Lucia and Gimo were more than happy to accomodate a second lesson (an early sunday morning) where they not only picked us up from our hotel again, but had breakfast waiting for us as well!! (amazing). We began the second lesson of the weekend and learned to make arrancini (we discovered the one step we have been doing wrong and that made all the difference!), gnocchi, two different pork dishes, and a second dessert. Again, we were fed like a king and queen with prosecco, wine, and an amazing meal. As much as we would like to try another restaurant while we are here, to be totally honest with you, we are most likely going to just return back to La Carcara.
In addition to the amazing cooking lesson and even better food, the scenery from this restaurant (the amalfi coast) is breathtaking (even in some of the worst weather we have had during this trip). A++++++++ Please don't miss this gem!!!!

“Home cooking at its Best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

We stayed at the Santa Caterina hotel and a concierge recommended this restaurant to us. It was an exciting 15 minute drive up the hill from the hotel. We walked into the restaurant and were greeted by Lucia the owner and her handsome son. Lucia was wonderful. We explained to her that my mother was named Lucia which endeared us to her. She explained the menu to us and made recommendations. She even took one of my sons behind the counter to allow him to take a picture of the fresh fish he ordered that was baking in the pizza oven. He also posed with Lucia's husband Gino, the chef, who was preparing the fish. Everything we ordered was delicious. The homemade pasta was to die for. The fish was as fresh as could be and prepared wonderfully. The grilled meat was cooked perfectly . Lucia also graciously treated us to focaccia pizza and to lemon-cello drinks. At the end of the evening we felt like we were members of the family. We highly recommend this casual reasonably priced restaurant not only for the food but for the hospitality of the owners.

“Fresh local delight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

We enjoyed everything about our lunch at La Carcara. We called ahead and they even stayed open for our late arrival at 3:30. It was well worth the bus ride from Ravello via Amalfi. Fresh fish of the day grilled with lemon was perfect, as were the spaghetti with sweet tomatoes and olives and the delicious salad with tomatoes and mozzarella. Each dish was flavorful and beautifully prepared. Umberto the welcoming waiter provided exceptional service and helpful menu suggestions. We have been dining out for 3 weeks in Italy and our lunch at La Carcara was among the most satisfying and delicious meals yet.
