“So stuck up!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013

We are just back from Amalfi and this was one of the hotels we considered staying at so we were eager to have a look and see if we had chosen correctly to stay somewhere else. We also wanted to check it out for future trips to Amalfi. We were going to go to the bar for a drink. You enter the hotel from the road and have to get the lift up to the main hotel. There was no-one there to show us where to go so we thought we would investigate further. As the lift doors were closing the doorman came running towards us demanding to know what we were doing. We explained we wanted to go to the bar, and he said that was impossible. When we asked why he replied that the bar was closed. This was clearly a lie as it was not even 9pm. I don't know why we weren't good enough for this hotel (despite the fact we were staying 5* just along the road) but I can't stand attitudes like that. I name dropped the bar manager as we'd been talking to his wife earlier that day and she said we should definitely go. This seemed to give us the go ahead to go to the bar but after being treated like that there was bo way I wanted to stay there so we left. Rude, stuck up, pretentious, I'm so glad we opted not to stay there after all.

Superb location with stunning views over Amalfi and the coast. We were lucky enough to have an excellent private balcony but the hotel provides lots of pubic space to enjoy the views to. The breakfast terrace is peaceful and beautiful and serves delicious melt in the mouth pastries. Rooms are small but clean. No tea or coffee making provided in rooms but everything else was there and in good working order. No problem whatsoever with Wifi. The hotel staff were friendly and attentive and spoke English very well. The hotel could do with publishing it's GPS co-ordinates as a little difficult to find if arriving by car after dark as we did. Look for the entrance just before the second tunnel on the right as you leave Amalfi town. Valet parking is a bit costly at 25 Euro's per day but necessary. Hotel can only be entered via two lifts too take you up the cliff side. We did see a guest in a wheelchairs so disabled access must be possible, though you could not have accessed our room due to the stirs if frail elderly or disabled. Wonderful time of the year to visit (mid October) as still warm but not as crowded as in the summer. If comparing with 5 star in a major city then no it is not but comparable, but if you keep in mind that you are in an old coastal resort and you are paying for a clean well presented well sited hotel with very pleasant staffing you will not be disappointed. We will most definitely be thinking of visiting off season again.

My husband and I spent almost a month in Italy for our honeymoon in October 2013 and we spent 3 nights at this hotel.

What we LOVED about this hotel:-

1) Location - Excellent. Located on a hilltop, our room (#505) had great views of the town and sunrise! We thoroughly enjoyed breakfast on the terrace watching the sunrise in the morning and I must say, the pastries at breakfast were the best and the freshest we had in Italy. Also, it is only a short walk from the city either through the little lane on the left of the hotel running parallel to the road through a quaint residential area or alternatively, you may also take the staircase (located a few steps away from the hotel parking lot) which leads straight down to the beach. I cannot emphasize more on the location of this place!

2) Staff - Very friendly and helpful staff. We had a problem with our bathroom which kept flooding each time we took a shower and the receptionist on night shift was very helpful. She cleaned up the bathroom for us and brought us a whole bunch of new towels.

3) History - We were in Rome before we went to Amalfi and had the opportunity to visit the Capuchin Crypt (which is breathtaking and truly one of a kind!). Coincidentally upon checking in to this hotel, we learnt that it used to be a convent for the Capuchins! We were completely blown away by the history of the place which made it all the more interesting.

Room for Improvement for the Hotel:-

1) Bathroom - Aside from the amazing views the bathroom window had to offer, our shower experience was terrible. Firstly, for every half a minute, the water in the shower turned burning hot and then icy cold before returning to the adjusted temperature. This happens each time we took a shower so I don't suppose this has anything to do with peak hours. Secondly, there are no shower curtains and the built-in partition covered only 1/3 of the length of the bathtub which you took your showers in. Naturally water splashed out of the tub and all over whenever we took a shower.... constantly flooding our bathroom each time we took a shower! As a result, my husband took to building a fort of towels at the foot of the bathtub each time before we took a shower. Terrible.

2) Beds - Pretty hard, but that was generally our experience throughout the whole of Italy anyway.

All in all, great experience nevertheless and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to our friends (with due warning on the shower experience beforehand). Hope the hotel does something about the bathroom soon!

(sorry this is so long)This hotel was gorgeous, we cannot say enough about our stay and experience, I could really go on and on. My husband and I were at the Amalfi coast in July, 2013 and spent only a couple of nights at this hotel, and we were very impressed. It was a ‘splurge’ for us, would have LOVED to have stayed at this location longer. The views are spectacular, honestly breathtaking, and beautiful. We couldn’t have asked for a more comfortable and accommodating place. Let’s start with our first impression of this hotel; we were met in the lower lobby by a hotel staff who took us up to the 3rd floor where the main lobby/reception is located. All the while explaining to us the history of building, this was very interesting. Before we actually checked-in, he led us out to the veranda where we were met with a glass of fresh squeezed lemonade, we sat on beautiful and comfortable furniture overlooking the everlasting view of the coast, this view is stunning. We were in awe and felt so relaxed. He then let told us that we were upgraded to a suite type room; we were so thrilled and excited! We finished checking in and he brought us up to our suite, it was absolutely GORGEOUS! We could not get enough of the view; our 3 windows faced the water. We’ve stayed at beautiful hotels before, but this place was outstanding. When you come to it by water, like we did, it looks like it’s built right into the Cliffside. The bedding and everything in the room was well appointed, way beyond our expectations. It was so clean and neat. White linens on the king bed, ahhhhhh. The bathroom had a huge tube, a separate large glassed in shower and 2 large vanities. Plush robes and slippers. We thought we won the lottery. Onto the pool; to get to the pool, you walk down arbor lined path surrounded and overflowing with flowers and at the end is an infinity pool which overlooks the sea. Just another breathtaking view. Comfortable lounge chairs. We had dinner in their restaurant that evening, delicious. Of course looking out over the sea, which made it even more wonderful. Each morning we enjoyed the breakfast. The variety of fresh meats, veggies, fruits, breads was outstanding. Their lounge areas were gorgeous with large/tall windows with white curtains hung on them that billowed when the wind blew. Honest to God, this place was magnificent. This was like no other place we’ve ever stayed. Clean and the staff was courteous and you could tell they cared for their hotel. Very easy to get to the center of town for shopping, the beach, ferry’s, taxi’s, but yet not in the hustle and bustle of a downtown area. We loved our stay and want to go back. We highly and thoroughly recommend this hotel.

My wife and I spent 3 days here at the beginning of October as part of our 3+ weeks in Italy. We travel extensively all over the world and have become fairly picky in our accommodations. We are always looking for places to stay where we can go explore for a few hours each day but then return to where we are staying to just relax and enjoy our holiday. We had a room with a balcony that had amazing views of the coast and Amalfi itself. The property is amazing with some history, great location, very tastefully decorated, top-notch staff, and just a great property. It is expensive; however, rather reasonable compared to everything else in Italy. There really isn't anything to do in Amalfi as it seemed to be just tourist shops. We explored the village for a few hours but that was plenty and then we returned to the Convento. The service and food in the restaurant were top-notch just like everything else. We moved on to Positano as our next stop during our Italian holiday and were really missing the Convento as soon as we arrived at our next property. I did not question my decision to stay here once I arrived and would definitely stay here again. The only thing I would say that could be improved was the internet service. I needed to work remotely a few times and the internet access was painfully slow at all times.

My boyfriend and I had an excellent experience at Convento di Amalfi. The location, service, room, and views could not be beat. The hotel is romantic and clean and the staff is extremely helpful. It was an easy and quick walk down to the city center and ferries to other points along the coast. Would definitely stay here again and recommend to others.
