We just came from Amalfi and ate at Gemma. My wife has been looking for risotto since we have been in Italy and we just had one of the best that either of us has ever had. I can not eat cheese and this was the most elegant dish served with raw red shrimp and no cream!! The tuna carpaccio and the lemon dessert were both wonderful. Granted, this is not a cheep meal and is not for the traveler that is on a budget, but if you can take a moment to relax and get away from shopping in Amalfi, this is a great location to do it. We arrived at lunch and ate on the terrace There was no problem in getting a table at this time and we did not have a reservation. The service was wonderful, the dishes were prepared and presented in a very upscale manner. This is not your typical Italian restaurant. There is plenty of food, but if you are looking for your normal heavy tomato sauce and pasta, this is not your place. Think much more refined. Your meal will start with an amuse bush and the chef continues to bring little surprises during the meal. The only comment that i have for the Gemma is that the silverware is more style than function. I would have liked a fork that stays put in my hand and a spoon that I can actually use. This is a minor detail, but one that sticks out when eating there. The staff was all very attentive and responsive to the fact that I am allergic to cheese and presented me many options that would appease my pallet.
Both my wife and I were so happy, that we have committed to returning in the next few days to try additional plates prepared by the kitchen staff at Gemma.
