“Fantastic suites in 13th century old church”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

The hotel is perfectly situated right inside the Sassi area. We stayed here for one night in January for my mothers birthday, incredibly beautiful suites, great atmosphere and very sympatic host. There is a lot to see in Matera and we had a great diner at La talpa

Room Tip: Choose the suites inside they are amazing! One suite has a great terrace outside, great view of the...

I found this hotel while browsing Trip Advisor reviews of small hotels in the south of Italy... My husband and I wanted to celebrate our anniversary in a unique place that would be a combination of relaxation, adventure and privacy. At L'Hotel in Pietra we found ALL of that and more. The accommodations were wonderful. Each room is unique in a way that words cannot describe. We were in a room that is essentially an enormous cave with a ceiling that had the remains of the archway of a forgotten church. The entire hotel is housed in what was once a church, with ceilings reaching 60-70' in height. It is hard to imagine the experience-- you just have to go there! The town of Matera, the "Sassi" where the hotel is located-- is an ancient town. This old part of town has thousands of residences, some inhabited, some not, all carved into the beautiful natural limestone of the land- with curving and ascending walkways connecting all of them in what becomes a fairytale of pedestrian cobble history. It is mythical and exciting -- delicious mozzaralla, olive oil and gelato! Great biking in the area too! An absolute must for all adventure goers!

Room Tip: Only 8 rooms-- i would recommend the largest suite or the two that are facing the entrance to the ho...

Roberto is the owner and a good host. During a tasty breakfast of bruschetta and focaccia, he gave us the interesting history of the hotel built into the sassi. The lobby is a deconsecrated church. We had the largest suite located directly off the lobby. As we told Roberto, while the room is a quite large reconstructed cave, it is too dark to do much of anything. I could barely read, and was unable to properly apply makeup. Ladies, if you want to wash and dry your hair, it will be very difficult to get it to dry. It was too damp in the room. The dehumidifier fans were quite loud in our suite, so it was not the most restful of nights. I would say that this place would be perfect for a unique night or two, but not to stay for business purposes. We weren't too happy to drag our bags in the rain up the cobblestone stairs to our car which had to be parked about 10 minutes by foot in the modern part of town.

Room Tip: Suite next the lobby is large, with multiple levels with irregular stairs. WIFI is good on main leve...

This hotel tops the list of "most unusual places I've spent the night". Our accommodations consisted of a luxurious cave, with the bath built into one excavation and the shower in another. There are only 8 rooms, plus a comfortable lobby. The included breakfast was modest, but delicious, and the staff was delightful. Each cave-room is unique. Ask for the room directly across from the front desk.

Room Tip: Ask for the room directly across the lobby from the front desk.

Well Matera is certainly different, although you may feel you recognise it, as the Sassi have regularly been used as backdrop in various movies- such as Mel Gibson's Passion. We stayed 2 nights and I feel that's about right. The rock churches, and the Sassi themselves are the highlight of any trip- although make sure to go over to the other side of the gorge for a full on view, and to see where Gibson chose to site the crucifixion. This is a place for adults, and probably when the sun is warm and not broiling, as you are likely to be doing quite some walking, and there's no pool. But it's certainly worth the effort.
Hotel in Pietra is located in the Sasso Bariano,- be prepared for walking and to be flexible over parking- as the original town planning was done 1500 years before the invention of the motor car. As others have commented the hotel is quite unique, loads of character, a lovely common area, and excellent breakfasts (the best bruschetta pomodoro). It is within walking distance of some lovely osterias- I'd certainly recommend Osteria Pico.

Very friendly staff. Hard to find but if you're driving, finding the parking garage is easy with gps, and porter service to walk you to hotel is handy. It would be pretty tricky finding the hotel on your own. Our room was huge, with hollowed out cave areas through out..problem is the space isn't well used and you have to accept that, well...you're in a cave and it feels humid and damp. Hotel is easy walk to the modern part of town as well as the old, pedestrian section. Advertised with wireless but not available in many rooms (caves), but good connection in lobby area.

Room Tip: rooms without the extra cave areas, which are unused, might be less cool and damp.
