“An Excellent Recommendation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2014

We were recommended this restaurant by a German couple who we met at our hotel. They visit Italy regularly and know where to find fine food! We were very pleased to eventually track it down I a side street and were welcomed warmly despite it just opening for the evening service. The menu is extensive and we found it hard to choose but both decided on a shared fish antipasto plate then risotto marina with great local vino bianco. The restaurant was quiet but that didn't bother us as we could concentrate on enjoying the delicious food. The staff were excellent and looked after us well.

“Overrated restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2014

As sea food lovers we have chosen this restaurant the first night in Matera. The restaurant gives you immediately the impression of being a specialist in seafood .The spaghetti vongole was rather tasteless and the sea bream simple with some vegetables. It was also not well presented. We do not care for this, but only in restaurants that do not pretend to be the best in town.Quite disappointing.Maybe due to the pact that the restaurant was rather empty the atmosphere was also rather cold

“It's enough to make you weep!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2014

First day of our Italian holiday. Missed a flight connection in Milan. Had to pay for another one for the flight to Bari but could only get there via Rome. Drive to Matera. Arrived at our hotel, quick change and then a hairy drive to Fornaci competing with all the locals for road space and parking places. Arrived at the restaurant completely frazzled.

But then our lives changed. What a superb restaurant. Fish is the speciality and boy is it special. Fresh mussels, squid, prawns, etc. Deep red tuna. Excellent bream, bass and swordfish. All cooked to perfection Puglinese style. Wonderful local wines of great depth due to the long hot days of southern Italian sunshhine. And rounded off with a semi-fredo and a local version of a millfeuille.

All for 70 Euros.

Sensational. Enough to make me cry tears of joy! You just don't get cooking this good at home. Not in a small provincial town. It's what makes going on holiday to Italy, France or Spain so wonderful for foodies like me. It's what makes life worth living!

“Alle Fornaci - Sea Food & More”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2014

I eat often at this restaurant, whenever i am in town, the amazing sea food is what this place is known for but it actually offers the best of any local Italian dish that you can imagine, you are spoilt for choice but the owner and his family will always do their best to help you choose and even create something new for you. A real family restaurant with a family atmosphere, interesting and delicious food every time at a good price.....by far the best food in Matera !
