Restaurante/Cervezeria Maipi is a well-established, traditional restaurant/bar just off Avenida Reino de Valencia, an impressive neo-classical avenue close to centre of the city.
The walls of the restaurant pay homage to the great players and teams of Valencia football club and display a wonderfully eclectic collection of photos, flags and posters spanning the last 50 years (at least). Despite its unassuming location and facade, the restaurant is usually busy. Locals line the bar and tables - there are few - are well worth reserving.
Food is simple, but, always very fresh and well prepared. Large bowls of rich and delicious dishes (vegetable and meat stews, squid in its ink and snails) arranged on the bar are complemented by a variety of meats and fish which are priced by weight.
Whilst the owner appear a little stern, he runs a very tight ship, and employs waitresses who - as if to compensate - are attentive and sweet.
Steaks, Salpicon de Mariscos and pisto were all wonderful on my last visit.
Whilst the prices at Restaurante Maipi are reasonable - be careful when ordering speciality seafood (which can really stretch the bill).
