“Great location, wonderful staff, could be brilliant with a few tweaks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2011

I stayed here wth my boyfriend for four nights in May. We found the hotel on the internet.

We turned up from the airport a little earlier than the official check-in time. Check-in was very efficient and the staff were lovely. They checked us in and provided us with a map and took the time to point out where the sights, the shopping centre and the nearest metro stops were, they also told us which buses/metro we'd need to take to get places like the City of Arts and Sciences. We were taken up to our room and despite being slightly early, our room was ready so we could settle in.

The room itself was lovely (a Dreamers room - 109), we had lots of room and even a sofa. We also had a large balcony, although it didn't have any sort of furniture so it was good for gauging the weather each day but maybe would have been better had we been able to sit out in an evening with a glass of wine. In terms of room facilities, we were surprised that the room didn't have any sort of tea or coffee making facilities (something that I've come to expect in even the most basic English hotels). Equally the TV was smaller than many hotels I've stayed in, but this wasn't a big issue really and certainly didn't diminish our enjoyment of the room.

We didn't have breakfast or eat in the hotel during our stay so I can't really comment on the restaurant facilities, nor did we use the spa.

The hotel is brilliantly located, there are two metro stops within about a five minute walk from the hotel and the old area of the city and its restaurants are only about a fifteen minute walk away. It's also walking distance to the City of Arts and Sciences if you fancy a nice stroll through the Turia River Gardens. The only time we used the metro was to visit the Bioparc and the beach.

The staff at the hotel were the best thing about the hotel, they were friendly and always willing to help. In addition to pointing things out at check-in, we were struggling with our key one day (the battery was dying) and a member of staff saw, let us into our room and took the key downstairs to sort out. We also came back one day to change when our room was being made up and the woman who was making up our room offered to let us have some time to change and get ready while she started on another room which was nice as we were just happy to change in the bathroom and go.

The only real issue we had (which we put up with) was that it took ages for the water in the bathroom to heat up, I came back one day to have a bath and ended up with a barely lukewarm bath because the water just refused to get any hotter. My boyfriend also had to put up with a cold shower one day. It wasn't too bad as it was warm while we were there but not quite what you expect from a hotel of this rating.

Overall I would recommend the hotel - the location was brilliant, the room was good and the staff were lovely.

Room Tip: Room 109 has a sofa rather than chairs

We stayed here for two nights and got a good price so thought it might be an average place to stay but it turned out to be a whole lot better! It's quite a cool type of place, wooden floors, a bit minimalistic etc. which suits us fine. Nice to have a full bath and separate shower with decent toiletries, and a balcony. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Aircon in the rooms, nice outdoor area and a spa were unexpected and very welcome. This all exceeded our expectations for a city hotel. The location is 10 mins walk from the Metro, and although it's a small way out of the old city it's easily walkable in 15 mins to the centre. If you're looking for food and drink in a local part of town away from the tourist (overpriced) hotspots, you're really close to a it here - a bit of research should take you there ;-)
Great place in a great city.

Had a 4 night break in this hotel. Truthfully very disappointed at the standards set by the hotel. Position was ideal for our stay a 10/15 minute into the centre. Our room was very spacious with a table and 2 chairs, however, we were plagued by ants which ran wild everywhere in the room. Staff were really well presented but seemed unable to grasp that their role was to service the customer rather then be part of the beautiful people. I am surprised a previous review felt the breakfast selection was good, it was poor, badly presented, and the hot plates were not switched on. On every morning there was a lack of food, plates etc. the staff seemed to feel it was beyond them to clear the tables. Has to be better hotels in the area, a very big disappointment

This hotel had such wonderful reviews but we were disappointed. Take care that you do not have a back room as you look on to the slums of Valencia and the rooms are cramped and oppressive. This hotel has no air condition which does not matter in March but in the height of the summer must be really difficult. We were changed to the front of the hotel which turned out to be really noisy. The bed was comfortable with lovely sheets but all in all why has it been given 5 stars?? It must be the spa but you have to pay dearly for that. Pool is in the spa so not FREE. I though this hotel to be 4 stars and no better. Would not return there. It is central but there are many other better hotels at a cheaper rate. The inside of the hotel has tried to be minimalist but it does not work. It somehow feels small and oppressive. Was not impressed.

The location of the hotel is perfect to explore the city. The building itself is beautiful just like the hotel inside. The mordern interior and the old caractere of the building is wonderful. The personnel was very friendly and helpful. Our room was big (we received an upgrade)which was perfect with all the baby stuff. The spa was great although too bad that almost all the pool lights were broken. Because of the baby we ate in house every evening, two days in the restaurant and two days roomservice. The food in the restaurant was very good although the roomservice could be a bit better. Breakfast was extensive. Summerized, we had a great stay.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights in a standard room. The room was really small and dark, one of the lamps and the air com didn't work. Please bear in mind that if you book a standard room you won't bet a slipper or a bathrobe. Wi-fi is not free neither is the use of the spa.

We travel often and have found a rare experience.

The instant impression we had of this fine Hospes Hotel changed our holiday plans to stay an additional second day. Cultural appeal, the staff's attention to detail, location, style: our instincts were confident. After the second day, we changed our ENTIRE travel schedule that we would stay in four Hospes Hotels during our adventure in southern Spain. (Valencia to Grenada, Cordoba, Seville, and then back to Valencia staying two nights in each respective Hospes Hotel.)

A distinguishing characteristic of Hospes Hotel is their careful acquisition and thoughtful development of historic Spanish properties. Within each major city the traveler is offered an experience which combines an architectural and cultural setting with a refined sense of human scale. This is rare for its sensitivity and variety. This philosophy also establishes the Hospes Hotels as, metaphorically, a "cultural ambassador," a role for which they are well prepared with the addition of contemporary interpretive menus and library within each hotel.

I write this review that the standard for travel may rise to this model we have experienced, and that others may also discover these Hospes oasis within the larger adventures of Southern Spain.
