“Best in Calpe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

We have been visiting Calpe for many years and have stayed in this hotel lots of times. The hotel cannot be faulted in any way. The rooms are of a very high Standard and always very clean. The food is also very good with a large variety of options.

Its my 50th Birthday in January and we have booked to stay at the Gran Sol y mar for four weeks!! I cannot wait.

Muchas gracias.

Location, friendliness, quality and cleanliness at this hotel is first class. The only minor detail which we were surprised about, was the fact to go into the indoor pool, it would of cost 33 Euros each for 90 minutes (this included the sauna & Jacuzzi), obviously we didn't bother, lucky the weather was kind to us at the end of October, and we used the out door pool, albeit a little cold.
Fabulous hotel, highly recommend it !

Room Tip: Interior view was very quiet without a view though.

There's not much to say that hasn't been said by nearly everyone else. A terrific hotel for very competitive prices. The room was large with a nice balcony, the breakfast selection was enormous (I had a BLT and glass of champagne, the breakfast of kings), and the location was practically ON the beach. The review below states that you only get one wi-fi password per room, but my partner and I were both given unique wi-fi codes, so no problems there.
The pool, overlooking the beach and Penon de Ifach, was very relaxing. A highly recommended stay.

While browsing hotels of Spain's eastern coast I was attracted by this hotel located in Calpe, not far from Alicante. I think it was that beautiful view from Executive room over the sea and the room itself that lured me. So my wife and I decided to take the Executive room during our holidays in Spain. We spent 5 nights in Sol y Mar in early October and the vacation turned out to be a complete success. October is a perfect time for this region. It's not hot, about 25-28 degrees, with rare freshing rains and breezes, but the sea is about 23-25 and you can still swim.
The hotel turned out to be the best in Calpe, and we walked through the whole town and failed to find any better located one. It's located right in front of the beach and executive rooms together with all others facing the sea can boast excellent view and relaxing atmosphere. The hotel looks rather new and stylish. Our room (I still recommend to take executive one, you won't regret it a while) was equipped with all you needed for a nice stay. We had nespresso coffee and tea making machine in the room and nice shower and bath amenities. But the key thing was a laaaarge balcony surrounding our room as the hotel is oval and some rooms are localted on both side- and facewalls (see my photos attached). So, no more words about the room :)
We took B&B plan and didn't regret it. Breakfasts were gorgeous and substantial. You could find anything you liked for any taste. Plus prosecco for a good day-start :). I cannot tell you anything about dinners but judging by breakfasts I'm sure they weren't disappointing either.
You don't need to have full meal plan in such hotel as first it's located right on the beachwalk with numerous cafes and restaurants of any choice, second you can walk deeper in the town and find even better meal options than in front of the sea, and third but not least Sol y Mar has an excellent supermarket on the ground floor! There you can buy everything you need: wine, jamon, cheese, fruit, cakes... Just to sit on the balcony with a fantastic view and relax sipping your wine and enjoying jamon. What else would you like to have? :)
The hotel has also a nice swimming pool with a perfect view over the sea, so if you're fed up with the sea, you may relax by the pool.
Now about some flies in the ointment that definitely do not ruin your stay and some guests don't even pay attention to them, but I'd like to state them, as there's always room for improvement :). First, if you arrive by the car, be ready to pay a fortune for parking. I think such large hotels with claims for a perfect stay can offer free parking for their guests. Yes, the hotel has an underground parking with a direct access to the hotel, but you have to pay for it (although a discounted price), and 5 nights cost us 70 euros! Parking in Spain is generally not cheap, but I still would recommend the hotel to show more care about their driving guests, as not all of them arrive by bus. Second, that's wi-fi. The hotel provides free wi-fi access for only one(!) device. So, if you have two smartphones and one laptop as we did you have to switch wi-fi between devices, so after several re-switchings you get completely tired with one question in mind: how come the hotel provides only one access? And third, the hotel doesn't have ice-cream. As a class! While laying by the pool on a hot day I suddently dreamt of a couple of scoops of ice-cream. The pool bar ruined my dreams. The lobby bar backed up its 'younger brother'. And even the restaurant failed. So I had to walk out to the beach and find the nearest ice-cream booth to fulfill my small gastronomic whim :). I guess hot weather implies not only beer in the bar, but 'non-alcoholic' ice-cream as well.
In general I would recommend this hotel without any doubts. Don't pay attention to the above mentioned minor deficiencies. The hotel is really worth staying. Just like an executive room ;)

Room Tip: Executive room rules!!!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

I was at this hotel for 14 nights in October and thought that it is one of the best hotels that I have ever visited. Almost everything was perfect – the location (20 yards from the sandy beach but also next the old part of the town), excellent rooms, fantastic view, superb food (both quality & quantity for breakfast and evening meals), and cleanliness & smartness were excellent so there is nothing much to complain at.
However, to aid the hotel to get even better, there were 3 things that I felt could be improved.

Room aircon – You can only up or lower this by 3 degrees at any one time. The first time I entered my room it was 29C, but took ages (about 30 minutes) just to get it down to 25C. Although it all works (slowly), I would sooner I could just enter the temperature I wanted and let it go straight there.

Pool area - This is separate from the main hotel but was a real let down. The pool is not really for a swimmer as its very shallow at both end but is useful for chilling down. There were rarely enough sunbeds but there were large numbers that were “occupied” by only a towel. There is a sign that says all towels will be removed after 20 minutes of absence but this never happened. The sunbeds were comfortable but were too close together. Many people came to the pool area, took one look and left for the beach, as I had to on many occasions. Many people buy drinks etc from the poolside bar, but if there is no room then the hotel is missing out on custom. This is one area that MUST be sorted out

Music - Music is played everywhere in the hotel (lifts, corridors, restaurant) but worse of all at the poolside. You cannot here music properly because of other conflicting noise (the sea, people talking, splashing in the pool etc) so all you get is a constant thump, thump, thump. The music was unrecognizable but reminded me of my young daughters first attempts on her first casio – you could put up with it for 10 minutes but after half an hour it was doing your head in. PLEASE STOP THIS MUSIC. If you really have to play something, make it pleasant music that people are familiar with (classical greats, pop standards etc) and NOT jazzy tin can noise.

Basically the hotel is excellent and is outstanding in most area’s, and if they can just sort out the pool area and get rid of the music, then it would rank as one of the best in the whole of Spain.

The town of Calpe is one of the nicest in the area. It has a lot going for it – 2 excellent sandy beaches with flat promenades, a marina, the Ifach rock, and lots of shops & bars. The best bit is the old town which is a great and safe place to wander around day or night There are a few areas that look a bit run down but these area mostly around the streets where the bars are, but here there is no problems with safety.
There are only 2 minor negatives to Caple. Firstly the old town is on a hill, but this should not worry most people except the very unfit or disabled. Secondly, about 1 in 4 of the local people you see have a very little dog attached to them. This is to do with the fact that a lot of locals live in apartments. I have no problems with that except I wish they would all pick up the dog poo. The beaches and prom are fine (except that the dogs all wee up against every seat) but it’s the minor streets in the old town that you have to watch where you tread.
Other than the above, it’s a very nice place to visit for a holiday.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a sea view
