We have recently spent a 7 day break at this spendid hotel with Saga, and delighted to confirm your many reviewers told it as it is! Substantial Bedrooms, any minor malfunctions speedily and efficiently dealt with. Breakfast and Evening meals are occasions to look forward to, with a great choice of food available. The hotel swimming pool facilities with a view overlooking the sea is unique, with easy access to the beach if one wishes to enjoy some sea bathing. The location of the hotel is within walking distance for the quality local shopping facilities, really coudn't be more convenient if a little retail therapy is fancied. What is there not to look forward to? in this delightful resort, we would certainly wish to give it another go in the future. Thank you Saga/Sol y Mar

Fantastic hotel! We have stayed here approx 10 times and never been disappointed. The hotel is sophisticated and stylish with finishing touches here and there that give it a real edge in comparison to other nearby hotels. The rooms are spacious and beds are comfy with fab seaviews. The bar and restaurant areas are spotless and food is divine - especially the evening meals in the week where it is not the typical buffet style choices. Breakfast is good with plenty of options and the service from reception to restaurant to cleaners is always excellent. The pool area is exceptional - a real showstopper! Although families and children are welcome, we feel this hotel is better for adults. We really cannot fault this hotel in any way - will keep returning again and again!

Room Tip: Definitely book a seaview room

We arrived at the hotel at about 9pm following our flight from East Midlands Airport to be met by and receiving an extremely warm and friendly welcome from a member of staff on reception. Our check-in was quickly processed and we soon entered our seaview room on the 5th floor. (Room 530)
Our room was extremely well furnished throughout and afforded sufficient storage and hanging space for our 1 week stay. The en-suite bathroom had separate bath and shower cubicle. A range of Yves Rocher toiletries was provided and replenished daily as required. We also received a welcome large bottle of water and a bowl of fruit in our room. The in-room fridge contained complimentary 2 bottles Coca Cola and 2 small bottles water. The bottled water was also replenished daily. The in-room safe is also available free of charge.
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are served in the Amfora Restaurant at the following times:
Breakfast 7.30am - 11am Lunch 13.30 - 15.30 Dinner normally commences at 20.00 but changed just before our departure to 19.30 - 22.30.
The Abiss a-la-carte restaurant must be booked in advance and has a surcharge of 15 euro per person for hotel guests.
The Llum Bar is sited close to reception area and is open late. Light snacks can also be taken in the bar making a comfortable stop off for a light lunch. The hotel additionally has a Café which is located at the beach side and open from 9am until midnight and can also be reached from the supermarket at the side of the hotel.
Close to reception is the Sala Urban TV room which regularly shows both Spanish and English football. Complimentary WIFI is available in the hotel and additionally 3 PC`s are available in reception for guest use although these are chargeable.
On our first morning we found the restaurant got very busy and a little chaotic although this appeared to be a one-off since the rest of our stay the restaurant was well organised.
At dinner there is a good selection of dishes available which should satisfy all tastes although some of the hotplates at the servery did not keep the food hot.
There is a Spa Club in the hotel which appeared to be very popular.
The Solymar Beach Club and Champs Bar is a perfect spot for lounging by the infinity pool and an ample supply of free suntan lotions available for guest use.
Any entertainment in the hotel appeared to be held twice weekly at the Beach Club commencing at 11pm.
The location of the hotel is perfect being just yards from the beach and from a good selection of shops. The seaview rooms have excellent views over towards the Ifach Rock.
We emailed the hotel a week prior to our stay requesting, if possible, a room on a higher floor.
A reply was received within the hour stating they would do their best to accommodate our wishes - which they did.
The staff in the hotel are all extremely friendly and helpful and always went out of their way to ensure our stay was an enjoyable one.
We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and can highly recommend the Gran Hotel Solymar in being the best hotel to stay at when visiting Calpe.

Room Tip: Feel that higher floor rooms have the best views and seaview rooms are a must. Street side rooms co...

The majority of reviews we read told us what to expect and they were generally correct.
One thing we didn't realise was that there is no open air /outside area to eat breakfast a big downside for us. The breakfast was plentiful BUT never hot enough. No warm plates to put your eggs on follow this with a tomatoe and beans plus whatever takes your fancy and by the time you sit down its virtually cold. We only actually had breakfast 4 times in a 11 night stay.
Apart from breakfast we enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: You need a seaview room and high up we had 735.

From the moment you arrive you cannot help be impressed. The quality is there to be seen and continues to Unfold the more you see of the hotel. The check is was top notch too. The room is fantastic. Poolside is incredible plenty of beds and fantastic views too. The breakfast buffet is beyond plentfiul and restaurant food is very good. A shame that the rest of calpe is not quite up to speed!

We had six nights in a sea view room with balcony and we felt this was definitely worth the extra cost. The hotel itself was spotlessly clean and our towels were changed every day. There was also complimentary Coca Cola and water in the mini bar. Breakfast was superb, with a good choice of meats and cheeses, pastries, cereals and English style cooked foods. There were also freshly made fruit smoothies and freshly cooked omelettes. Evening meal was also very good, although to be fair, we went to the restaurant at 8 most nights which was just after it opened. The one night we did go a bit later, the choice was a bit more limited. I'm sure the empty trays would have been replenished but it was a bit annoying having put half the meal on the plate to find empty dishes where the meats and fish should have been. This is a very minor point and is given just to provide a bit more of a balanced view. The pool area is very nicely furnished with rattan type loungers and thick padded mattresses to lay over the top. The area looks out over the sea and beach and the pool has been designed so that when sitting around it, it looks as if it leads straight into the sea., which I thought was really clever, and looked beautiful. Pool towels are provided for a deposit of €10 Euros and you can change them as often as you wish, it they get wet. They can also be taken to the beach. I thought this was a really good idea, especially given the limits that airlines are placing on luggage weights these days. My one criticism would be that the loungers are very close together. Literally inches apart and there isn't that much space to move them about. The pool area also doesn't open until 10am which I thought was rather late. The beach was very clean and two loungers and a parasol were €13.50 Euros per day. I didn't think much of Calpe itself. Maybe we were just looking in the wrong place but the shops were very sparse and there really wasn't that much to buy. If you like your bags and shoes ladies, then I think you're going to be disappointed! We were half board so didn't need to worry about restaurants in the resort which I was glad about as I didn't see any that looked particularly enticing. Just the usual tourist type ones with pictures of the egg n chips or pizzas they were serving. There is parking at the hotel, and also a spa, champagne bar and nightclub. I thought the spa treatments were on the pricey side. The only things on offer under €50 were manicure/eyelash tint type treatments. All the massages and facials were over €50, which I thought was rather a lot. I'd definitely go back for the hotel, but wouldn't go back to Calpe as other than eating and drinking, there wasn't much to do in the evening. I like to do both, but I also like to have a wander and do a bit of shopping in the evening and sadly the facilities for this were just not adequate for me.

Recently returned from a week's stay at Gran Hotel Sol y Mar in a Superior sea view room. The hotel is in a great location, right on the sea front and is a minute's walk to the sea front shops, restaurants and bars. It's also only a 5 minute walk to the lovely old town.

The hotel room had a great view of the Penon from an ample balcony. The bathroom is clean and modern with a bath, sink, toilet, bidet and separate shower cubicle - with a nice powerful shower! The bed is big and comfy and the cleaning staff do a great job every day changing beds and towels and stocking up toiletries and water.

The reception staff were also good - they are happy to help and recommend restaurants etc and the reception and foyer is clean, bright, modern and large.

The hotel pool is lovely - a main pool and a small plunge pool with free sun loungers, chairs and outdoor sofas. At night, the pool and Beach Club is lit up and looks great. Although we had no problems getting a sun bed, I imagine this could be a problem in the peak months of July and August as the pool is very popular.

If I were to visit Calpe again, I would definitely stay at this hotel.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, ask for a sea view room.
