This was our third year in a row staying at the Deloix and there is only one reason we would ever return to a place twice, let alone three times and that is simply because we enjoyed it.
It was made even better this year because our friend from the first visit, Paco, was back behind the bar!
We were so disappointed last year when he had moved away. He is such a nice fellow and always happy to help us with our terrible Spanish!! But we do like to try :0)
We stayed for 10 days on this visit and I have to say that although it is still a great hotel, it is starting to show some signs of wear and tear. For example, as soon as we walked into our room we spotted that the covering on the sofabed was ripped in several places. Large tears, not little frays around the edges. Maybe it's the economic climate, maybe there's no cash for repairs, but I doubt it. I think the attention to detail has just slipped a little over the 3 years we've been coming that's all.
It's the same with the food in the restaurant, the standard has definitely dropped over time. We were struggling to find something that we actually WANTED to eat on some nights and indeed we ate out 3 times. Other times we just picked the better bits from the buffet and then went out and topped up with tapas in town.
Fresh made paella or fideua were served some nights which were lovely, but by the time they had been left unattended under the heat lamp for 10 minutes they were ruined.
The hot main meals definitely seemed to be made with lower quality meat than before also.
I'm not saying the food is terrible, far from it, but where the rest of the hotel deserves its 4 stars, the restaurant lets it down a bit.
As well as the sofabed, the shower was very weak and the air conditioning unit squeaked when in use but all in all the room was fine. We didn't really need to use the air-con anyway. We overlooked the pool area (see pic) but it was never too noisy or intrusive.
I think I paid somewhere between 5 and 10 Euros for a 7 day connection to the hotel Wi-Fi which while not extortionate, in this day and age I think it should be free.
The reception/bar/entertainment area is very modern, light, clean and tidy but unfortunately it doesn't create a warm friendly atmosphere and we didn't spend much time in it other than chatting to Paco at the bar. Hotel entertainment isn't really our thing anyway.
It must seem, reading back through this review that all I have is complaints about the Deloix which is totally wrong. I really, really like it here. It is in a great spot, far enough out of town to escape the noise and (in my opinion) horrible-ness of the Levante English area, but not too far out to be a bother to get to the old town. The number 10 or number 4 bus stop just across the road from the hotel and for 1.50 Euros each take you right down to the old town avoiding all the louts.
Catch the Number 10 directly outside the hotel during the daytime and it will take you to L'Alfas Del Pi (inland town), Albir and Altea where there are quieter beaches, nice bars and restaurants serving tapas and meals.
Get off the bus just before the town at L'Alfas Del Pi train station and you can go forward to Calpe and Denia on the train. About 45 minutes away, Calpe is lovely and Denia is about a 1 1/2 hour journey up through the mountain and down the other side.
We will definitely be back to the Deloix, it's one of our favourite hotels in Spain. I just hope they pull their socks up a bit and sort out the niggles. an extra Euro or two per head spent on the menu and it'd be great, which would invite more top reviews on Tripadvisor, which would mean more bookings.....wouldn't it? Seems like simple business sense to me. They are having to close during November this year, a first, because of a lack of people. Another sign that they need to up their game.
Nearly all rooms seem good. Try and avoid overlooking the kids pool though as the constantly running...

Thank you for your time and loyalty.
For your information, the hotel is closing this winter for a couple of months in order to refresh our rooms, that's to say, in 2014 Deloix will be like a new Hotel!
Hope to see you around for the fourth time so that you see those changes by yourself.
