“Don't waste your time or money. Avoid this place”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013 via mobile

In several traveling guides, this restaurent is being suggested as a top ten Madrid "exclusive" restaurant. This is absolute bullocks.
We were seated in a back room, no causy atmosphere whatsoever.
The service was absolutely despicable if not none existant.
I ordered chicken soup and basically got a warm watery bouillon with pieces of ham inside.
The tuna salad was just ridiculous.
The steak was ok but served with exactly 3 miniature potatoes and 3 small peppers.

All of this way overpriced!

“Soak up the atmosphere (along with the consomme)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

Cafe Lhardy is a classic Madrid tradition. Like Katz's Deli in New York it is a brand it its own right. I visited twice recently while on a trip with a friend -- once for a light lunch downstairs, and once for dinner. The food was classic and reliable rather than innovative or gourmet, but very acceptable. The setting itself is all dark wood and sparkling gilded mirrors in the nineteenth century mode, and worth visiting in itself. Downstairs, per recommendations from friends, we had what consomme and croquettes, which were delicious. For dinner, one of us had fish, the other steak. Everything was prepared very well. The service, if formal, was immaculate. We weren't expecting Michelin cuisine, or California-style "hello, my name is Cindy and I'm your waitperson tonight," and we didn't get, either. What we did get and thoroughly enjoyed was old-style elegance, Madrid-style.

“For ordinary food and rude staff this is the place”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

the food was very very average, The staff from the maitre de to the waiters were ignorant offhand and uncaring.

One waiter actually bounced a plate of food across the table. To give him credit it did stop in exactally the right spot so he must have had lots of practice.

GIVE THIS ONE A BIG SWERVE¡¡¡

“Old-fashioned”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013 via mobile

The food was good and we liked most of it but the waitstaff was horrible. Our waiter was rude and on multiple occasions we asked for something and we were looked straight in the eye and didn't get what we asked for until we asked twice more. The atmosphere was the best part of our experience .

“Old and traditional restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

Queen Isabel II of Spain used to visit it and utilize the reserved dining rooms for her "meetings": great soups, great cocido madrileño. An institution.
