Well I'm currently working in Madrid for a few months and decided as i was out here to celebrate my birthday here too.
So what to do with 6 bessie mates from London??
Most important thing was to get the accommodation right. I knew my friends would be travelling in, would be a little tired and needed to be comfortable. Being a detailed organiser, i had planned this trip for months. The picture of the basic rooms gave the impression that the rooms were a little too cosy (small), so i decided on booking 4 rooms on the level for a bit more space. (as recommended by reviewers on here). On arrival i felt disappointed at the sizes of the rooms on the level......i felt a bit deflated after months of preparation. The hotel is a listed building so i guess the space premium is due to restrictions that come with that.
this amazing hotel had allocated 4 rooms with balconies for me over looking the Plaza Santa Ana. They had ensured that the rooms were next to each other as i had requested too. They also gave me access to all the rooms to leave little goody bags full of suprises i had prepared for my girls (my version of a kiddies party bag, with a little personalised card and message for each friend). i wanted everything to be perfect that weekend and nothing was too much trouble for the hotel to organise! The views from these rooms over the plaza were fab during the day and quite magical at night. This is also true for the rooftop bar too which guests have special access via an internal allocated lift.
On arrival my friends absolutely loved the hotel and they loved their rooms. We shared 2 to a room (only kingsize beds not twins on the level) and i thought this would be a squeeze but the rooms were amazingly comfortable and space didn't really seem to be an issue for us....it just worked! The beds were amazingly comfortable and the shower was lush! oh and did i mention the Aveda toiletries that were provided?? little things that make a difference.
As the girls were peckish after the flight we just had to go out on the doorstep to find something convenient to eat after their long journey. The Plaza is full of eateries and there is plenty of choice. Was the square touristic? Of course but my friends were tourists too:-).
The hotel helped me organise a champagne breakfast for the morning after the arrival of my guests. This was just such a lovely touch as they laid out the table in the bar area where we were able to enjoy our buffet breakfast on our own with plenty of natural light which in itself felt extremely special. If each guest joins the hotels loyalty programme, 2 people get to eat for the price of one at breakfast:-)
So in summary - i was here for a very special birthday celebration which took months to plan and the hotel was perfect for my group of girlfriends. It was trendy, pitched just right for my stay and was in a great location, perfect for a weekend break or getaway. The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and seem to always know my room number......lololol....yes i think i was that much of a pain before everyone arrived!!
i didn't have dinner at the hotel so can't comment on the dinner menus as being the organiser that i am, i booked the 'Metro Bistro' and 'oh Cabaret' restaurants for us to have dinner. i also booked a Flamenco show at the 'Corral de la Moreria', went on the bus tour for a speedy orientation of Madrid for the girls, went to El Rastro market on the Sunday and had a spa day at the Sheraton Mirasierra hotel and spa. I have reviewed all of those locations separately.
Special mention to 'oh Cabaret' and 'Corral de la Moreria' as they both organised birthday cakes/champagne/special seating at the show and just unbelievable special treatment for my birthday....a lovely surprise. If i have any negatives for the hotel ME i think that something personal to me on my actual birthday was the only thing lacking and would have added to the whole birthday experience at the hotel. So if anyone else comes for a birthday please leave them a chocolate or a complimentary bottle of something in their room, even a free upgrade.:-) Unfortunately the only thing that was personal to me was when i was leaving i was told the 2 coca colas i had drunk from the mini bar were free because it was my birthday. lol. This is minor but i thought worth a mention!!!
So a big thanks to the 'Hotel ME' for being part of what turned out to be an awesome unforgetable birthday weekend...anyone hesitating out there...dont... just book it!!
